  1. If you're happy then does it matter what it's got in it? Good luck with it
  2. I think there's too much emphasis based on a certain size of mesh. People saying you must have 2+1/8", 2+1/16", etc are showing themselves as niave! Rabbits never come in one size so how can one size mesh be 'the best'. Obviously you wouldn't want the mesh too large so I wouldn't go over 2+1/4" board! You'll do fine with your 2" board so stick to it, and lets see some picture when the nets finished
  3. Excellent Just what rabbiting is all about
  4. The eyes are exactly the same apart from the albino's eye lacks any colour pigment. They see the same whether day or night!
  5. Some nice looking dogs Here's my current worker; Sire 1st cross Saluki/Greyhound - Dam lurcher of grey/saluki/collie blood Crow
  6. The albino gene is recessive to all others; the only way to breed an albino is to breed two ferrets carrying an albino gene - and they could both be polecats in looks. The polecat gene is dominant, just as the silver seems to be but that doesn't mean you can't cross two animals with a dominant gene otherwise we wouldn't be able to breed a polecat with a polecat would we? There are dangers to breeding certain types of silver but that would take too long to go into right now. As for black-eyed-whites? I have a b.e.w. that has only ever thrown silvers when crossed with a silver and a mix

Why do people insist on playing amateur vets? If you think there's something wrong then get the dog to a real vet! For the sake of £30 you'll know what (if anything) is wrong. Mess around now and it could lead to a lot worse! Crow
  8. Ah, the bell on the collar. I tried it once but it doesn't work! It soon gets cloged with mud and crap, and even when it's not it doesn't hand right on the ferret so therefore doesn't 'ring' properly. Unless I just have fat, thick-necked ferrets of course!
  9. He's either pulling your leg or he's very naive Frank! The only time a white dog is a disadvantage is when you're lying in a hedge and the gamekeeper is approaching with his little torch - that's when you hope you've a big enough coat to cover it
  10. The dead ones don't bother me, and I doubt they bother the landowner either. Dying ones are a bit different of course because no-one wants to leave an animal to suffer. However, even with a locator there is suffering going on, and I suspect there are still rabbits left underground in a pretty bad way. That's the way of ferreting and ferrets. I suspect that the number of rabbits who are prepared to sit tight and ride it out are greater when you have an impatient ferreter stomping over the warren with locator in hand - so mybe the ferret locator adds to the number of rabbits suffering? If t
  11. Spot on Ruger. Locators can make things easier but they aren't essential!
  12. I ferreted for many years without owning a locator, and I never lost a ferret! Interestingly, I never had as many problems with lay-ups as some who use locators seem to have either If you use common sense, fieldcraft and your eyes you'll more-than-likely have no problems at all. You may have to wait for a ferret to come out but hey, that's a good time for a cuppa anyway. To say that those who ferret without locators are fools is a sweeping statement and (imo) unfounded. What I wouldn't do however, is to work a ferret on a line, that's not what a line is for. Its a way of using on
  13. I use my locator in the same way that I would use a line!
  14. I would love to take my terrier out on the lamp, but the cover would have to be the right length! Not so short it gives the rabbit easy running, but not too long for my terriers little legs
  15. Look up in the top right-hand corner under 'New Topic'. Under that is a button 'options' click so you get a drop-down list and see what display mode setting you have? Is it set to standard? If not, select standard!
  16. " The Complete Book of Ferrets " by Val Porter and Nicholas Brown is, without doubt, the best book on ferrets/ferreting currently available. Keep an eye on ebay, first editions go for a few quid but reprints go cheap Also, get yourself some of the older books too - nothing new in ferreting, what goes around comes around so some of their outdated views are now in date
  17. Purchased for my boy but he needed the one with the built-in modem. This is absolutely brand spanking new and has only been taken out of the box to read the instructions. This is a wireless router with 4 ports. Plug it into your ADSL modem (make sure it has an RJ45 type connection) and you can then wire-in 4 computers to use one internet access. Alternatively use it as a wireless bridge for your lap-top. It has other stuff too such as 'easy set-up with Nintendo DS'. And, if that's not enough, it is 35% faster than standard 802.11g! A review of the item can be found HERE
  18. Bob, i take it that question is aimed at me? If so, it's a bit off track because you've admitted that a bull x will struggle in daytime which is admitting that it cannot be the perfect allrounder - and that's the question at the head of this thread! But to answer your question; imagine a wet night, to the point that the fields are sodden, the rabbits are sitting close to the hedge and those that don't run straight for home are more than happy jinking, ducking and weaving in the sodden mud. They'll turn several times back and foreward before heading for the safety of the hedge - fancy y
  19. No such thing as the perfect single cross if you want to hunt a range of quarry (legal or not) in my opinion. All these people who state that a bull cross or collie greyhound is the best are, in my opinion, talking bollocks. Its horses for courses. If it's just rabbits you're after then you don't need a 70lb bullcross - in fact if you have one you'll be at a distinct disadvantage! For rabbits you'll do no better than either a collie/grey or collie/whippet (depending on whether ferreting or lamping light your fire). A bedlington cross may suffice too - but I'd stick with a collie cross
  20. To be honest if that the value you place on your dog then you don't deserve a dog in the first place
  21. Dawn, I understand your reasons for posting the information above, but until the idiots stop posting 'pre ban' shots and then following it up with a post stating that the dog in the image was born last January making it 11 months old you're wasting your time. A bit of common sense on behalf of the poster could save them from more grief than all the technical know-how in the land of IT! Well done for trying tho, you shouldn't be slated for trying to help
