  1. Here's my effort. 24 feet long by 6 feet deep. Used to kennel 3 dogs and splitable if the bitch comes into season.
  2. Here's mine: Sire 1st cross Saluki/Greyhound and dam lurcher of grey/saluki/collie blood.
  3. Absolutely Stubby, get to know your ferrets and their breeding Crow
  4. Glad you enjoyed your day out with my brother - I was going to join you but other commitments meant I could. Sounds like you had a good day which makes me envious! Still, plenty of time in the season yet
  5. I've never tried night-time ferreting. If I wanted to ferret land on which I'd got permision then I'd ferret it during the day, on the other hand if I wanted to poach then I'd use the dog or net! Maybe I'll give it a go one moon-lit night just to see what the crack is. Crow
  6. Then you'll have to look at their breeding and ask yourself why these deformaties occured!
  7. Stubby, so what you are saying is that because some people may not be responsible enough then we stop those that are? That’s a pretty dangerous ethos don’t you think? Some people may not be responsible enough to own a handgun so let’s stop everyone from owning one! Or how about pitbulls – some may not be responsible enough to own one so let’s stop everyone from owning one! You see where we are going here? Those that aren’t responsible wouldn’t even ask the question, they would breed and bugger the consequences. It’s the same with the handgun and pitbull bans – you
  8. Possibly, or maybe a little knowledge and plenty of common sense has helped me through? It annoys me when people make such blanket statements as 'you should never breed silver to silver' because that leaves the uninitiated thinking 'why?'. Of course, it could be that the person making that statements doesn't really know why, they are just passing on advice they have been given. In the case of breeding silver to silver there is a risk of Waardenburg Syndrome, however that doesn't mean all silver to silver matings! Waardenburg Syndrome can cause hearing defects and colouration character
  9. Yep, as has been said an old army surplus coat minus the buttons. Another good pole holder (quiver) can be made from the litle bag that tent poles come in - that's assuming you have an old tent laying around of course - or the bag that you get with those really cheap three-legged stools at game fairs (about £1.99). The advantage of the latter is the draw cord which holds the pegs tight as you leg it off the field
  10. PM Molecatcher who may be able to help out. I also have a good contact for twines too
  11. Some people have the same view that always breeding silver to silver will produce deformed kits just as brother to sister does - simply not true I'm afraid (although it could happen - and for more than one reason). I have often bred silver to silver and have never bred a kit that was deformed, deaf or in any way inferior to other colourings. Maybe I'm just lucky? Theres is a thing about panda masked type colouration (for want of a better description) but that doesn't apply to all silvers; it can apply to some polecat marked ferrets too! Crow
  12. Normally it's October to March for me!
  13. I've heard of many true wild polecats that have been mated to ferrets but I've yet to see one! As for whether a feral ferret would survive in the wild then yes, for a while.
  14. Feeding meat isn't a new idea - they were feeding meat to ferrets long before we were an itch in our grandfathers underpants! Oh, by the way, I live in the arse end of England
  15. Then they should have known better in 1987!
  16. I've seen two ex track greyhounds try to work (on several occasions!) and both were diabolical in their obedience, had to be lifted over gates and ditches, had the turning circle of a bus and were the biggest canine whingers I've ever met! Of course, you could put the time in to improve their obedience, jumping, etc, but if you're going to put the amount of time needed into a dog then you might as well get a pup! My opinion: get an ex track greyhound as a pet or for breeding purposes, but not as a working dog! Crow
  17. Mantha: Just out of curiosity, now that you know polished hemp will rot like non-polished are you still going to change?
  18. If the ferrets what I call a 'killer' then you'll not stop her. Feed her if you like, but she'll still kill. Best to use that trait to your advantage; get yourself a locator kit and use her on what you believe to be not quite so deep, open warrens - ferret in, get a mark, dig and pull the rabbit from the hat. As for muzzles or taking off the teeth forget it! Incidentally, not all ferrets were fed on bread and milk a few years ago Crow
  19. Nice looking dog Simba, good luck with him
  20. Top job Paid - it may not look as pretty as a commercially purchased one but as long as it does the job
  21. I'm guessing you haven't ferreted before so my advice would be to get a couple of dozen purse nets and start to learn the ways of ferrets and rabbits FIRST. Get out in the field, lay your nets and see what happens! You may catch a few, some may get away, but you'll start to learn the ways of ferrets and more importantly rabbits. Knowleadge of quarry and good fieldcraft will catch you more than a certain type of net Good luck
  22. Get yourself a couple of jills and get to know a few ferreters who are within travelling distance (either through this site, other sites, etc) - one is bound to have a vasectomied hob you can use. Alternatively, get together with a mate and get a hob between the two of you, that way it's half the expense (about £50.00 for a ferret snip locally to me). Crow
  23. This could be interesting And for the record, no I don't have such a dog.
  24. You should have said Paid, if you didn't want them then I wouldn't have given them to you in the first place Nice gesture, always good to help out the youngsters
  25. That's a Bellman & Flint. Alternatively, get yourself to an Army & Navy shop for a spade, not the smallest personal issue ones but the ones they have for tanks. Good spades for a fiver
