What should my velocity be? (HW80K .22)
matt_hooks replied to mooster's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
Phantom, I used my Excel spreadsheet that I have set up for doing those calculations. And the BC makes no difference to the ME, it's purely a function of mass and velocity! Mooster, pleasure mate. I'd note that down as this thread will probably get pulled when the mod sees it. -
What should my velocity be? (HW80K .22)
matt_hooks replied to mooster's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
RWS Superdome? To calculate the energy of your pellet, the calculation is (velocity x velocity x pellet mass)/450240, where velocity is in feet per second and mass is in grains. The RWS superdome are 14.5 grain, so your max velocity will be just slightly over 610 fps. To be on the safe side you shouldn't be shooting over 600fps with them, and remember the law says that it should not be capable of firing any projectile at over the legal limit, so a bit of space to spare is necessary. Best to get a competent gunsmith to do it for you, as altering the internals on a gun can be dangero -
recommended breakbarrel
matt_hooks replied to rabbit.slayer.no.1's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
For £300, if you shop around and bargain hard, you should be able to pick up a reasonable entry level PCP, with a bottle. Cheap as chips to refill (a bottle refill is less than a fiver and lasts for meny rifle refills) and the complete lack of recoil makes shooting accurately a doddle. If it's definitely GOT to be a springer, a Theoben Fenman is a good choice, or one of the many Weirachs that are about (but everyone has a Weirach these days!) -
Have a look at ebay item no. 320568138648. Is that what you're looking for? I've seen a few bag type rests too, that sit over the window, but can't find any of those at the moment.

If you have the land to shoot over, and a good reason to hold (and being a poultry farmer I'd say foxes were pretty high on your agenda) then there's no reason the police should turn you down for a CF. If you're in doubt, have a word with the BASC firearms department, they will help you out if you are a member. Don't let the police bully you into putting in an application that's not what you want! As an aside, if you go for a .22 WMR instead of a .22lr (it's the same calibre so the same on the FAC) then you will have the best of both worlds. Foxes safely out to 60 or so yards, and bun

Sam sam sam! You really have put your foot in the hornets nest with that one! In theory, a .22LR with standard velocity amunition has sufficient energy to kill a fox out to 60 or 70 yards. HOWEVER that leaves you very little leeway for a slight misplacement of shot. The wound track from a .22LR is not wide, and so unless you manage to place the shot precisely into a major organ, such as the heart or brain (surprisingly small targets on a fox) the chances are that you will end up wounding the animal. I have no qualms about using .22LR at short ranges, where I can guarantee where the sh

I have an early Scirocco, the precursor to the Fenman. Unfortunately it's decided to break on me. The power is a little low, and now the trigger has decided it's not gonna engage now! Spoke to Theoben and they say they're trying to source some bits, and to email them in a few weeks. Didn't know they sold a charging adaptor for the gas ram, will ask about that!

Shooting ranges with semi-auto .22lr

Haha I know exactly what you mean mate, mine only arrived less than a week ago, on saturday morning! -
Voere 2115 .22LR semi-auto
matt_hooks replied to matt_hooks's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I'm not a huge fan of the plastic... thing... in front of the trigger guard, but otherwise yeah, a good looking gun. Shoots well too, the local pigeons, who until recently thought they were safe if they got past 40 yards, are finding out that 100 yards is definitely in range now! -

Depends on the rifle really. Mine is zeroed at 60 yards, and will group around the inch mark at 100. All depends on getting the right rifle/ammo/scope combination! Try your rifle with as many different types of ammunition as you can lay your hands on, then zero with the best grouping one! -
Don't drop your rifle mate, it jars the scope and makes it not shoot straight... Ooooon second thoughts, feel free to drop it, might give us mere mortals a chance at the HFT! Ideation? Idiotion more like!

The Fenman is a gas ram break barrel. I would advise against using a bipod on a springer/gas ram. Accurate and consistent shooting relies on a consistent rest of the rifle. This is best achieved with your hand between the rest and the rifle. A bipod seems a great idea, but the hardness of the rest will vary depending on the surface it's rested on. If you are wanting to shoot prone, a set of tripod sticks that you can set up and use to hold as a rest is good.

hi u got a pic cant get them up. That's never good! Sorry couldn't resist.

Any chance you'll be near Newbury in the next couple of weeks mate?
-
Anyone had any experience of these? Are they any good?

The safest way is to take it to your nearest RFD for disposal. You could ignite it, but if you decide to do that, use a long stick, a good four or five feet MINIMUM with a piece of meths soaked cotton wool to light it, and make sure you're upwind of it. Burial is also an option, as long as it's somewhere you can guarantee it'll not be disturbed for a couple of years. Nitro powder is pretty much all organic, so it should rot down fairly quickly in moist conditions.

And of course, if you give them a crate of beer or two, that wouldn't count as payment, or maybe a birthday card with some folding readies in it!

accu pell pellets
matt_hooks replied to s horsfield's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
A good reference for pellet weights here. The Accupel are 14.3 grain in .22. Is your S200 at the correct pressure? Under AND overpressure will cause it to be under power. It might be worth running a long series of pellets to see if it improves. It's also possible that your gun doesn't like accupel. What pellet do you usually use? -
Firearms Licensing Departments

It's new legislation fella. There's a thread about it on here, "just my luck" I think it's called. You can still own the guns, but you can't purchase them, or any amunition for them, after the 28th of July (wednesday coming.) You can however be given a rifle and ammunition. -

Thames Valley Police. The FEO is brilliant. Had a few interactions with the "firearms licensing manager" at HQ, and the staff seem pleasant enough and fairly knowledgable. Unfortunately the experience somewhat soured by their losing a load of my paperwork, and failing to let me know that they'd lost it/not received it. The whole thing took nearly 4 months! Throughout the FEO was brilliant. Knowledgable and seemed interested in actually getting me my licence! Unfortunately again they were extremely inflexible and the central office seemed interested in preventing me from getting my licenc -
What a great idea, and brilliantly executed. Thanks to Chaz and Davey for being great hosts and organising everything. A fantastic weekend, with gorgeous weather and good company, with a bit of shooting thrown in (and I'm blaming the new mod for my coming stone cold last! ) The course was great, but can you use a bigger drill for the bell next time, and maybe make it a bit less of a trek? Only kidding, the course was good fun, and everyone shot alarmingly well, look out bunnies, squirrels and corvids! We won't mention a certain young lady who beat her father hollow, honest! Festa's never

Ah TD, there are a few breweries that compete for the best beer name. One of my favourites (and rather a tasty brew too) is from Wychwood brewery. I kid you not, "Dogs Bollocks".

I'd still like to know which piece of legislation they're using to justify it. The current legislation means that at 17 you can buy a shotgun and ammunition. Unless there's been a change I can't see how anything else is enforcable!
