As with everything, it will probably come with time! Have patients with him. Can you not take him out with other handlers and their birds and let him see them work. You may be surprised that it will take to it all when its ready! What are you using as a lure? Use something it will relate to such as a rabbit skin if you are going for cottontails, and so on.

Jessy did very well I must admit. I was a little (a lot) concerned as it would have been my first year with a BOP on bonfire night! Saying bonfire night though, it seems to go on for ages with all these fireworks going off willynilly.

It only takes one or two occations like this to start things off with the media! I havent read it as yet, but can imagine the reactions its already getting. You know what they have done as far as certain breeds of dogs are concerned. Cmon lads, dont give them an excuse. BOP handlers need to realise the potential of their birds to go for anything that runs around under them. Thats what you spend all your time trying to train them to do aint it! It is never the animals fault, always the handler. An animal is only doing either what comes naturaly, or what a handler has trained

Dont spos they cover for liability in a package with that do they, always a thought if you think about it! Never know what they can get up too once they are off the glove, lol. Poodles are not cheep to replace, lol
-
I think we would be surprised how much they can put up with! I recon we realy do worry too much, lol. (Is it realy us that are scared of the the big bad bangs, lol)
-
Not bad! Question answered for me even though I didnt get a chance to ask it myself! Cheers for asking Ginger! Gonna get straight onto them this week and sort out something, now that the male is due to come!
-
Ive been popping out now and again, but we are lucky at the moment this year, there hasnt been a lot of noise realy, which is surprising! Even my Salukis havent moaned this year. Mind you, last week, the boy next door didlet one hell of a banger off in the back yard, and their yard echoes sounds, it shook the house. She didnt worry too much about it though. Frightened the hell out of me though, lol/

We all though to ourselves once or twice, when we seen those mudflaps on the side of the road (They could come in handy one day) But never picked them up, lol. now you will, lol.

Cheers! Just imagined two very quiet birds suddenly turning into sqeelers, lol. Neighbours would deff love me then, lol.
-
Yep! That was me! I always ask the obvious questions that a lot of people are afraid to ask themselves, lol. And you always give a good reply. Thats the difference between this forum and the others.

The male Harris is comming to us this weekend! The female is in her mews at the top of the garden, and is free lofted. What i am wondering, is , where best to place his mews. Is it best not to have them facing each other as they are free lofted, do you think there may be a bit of conflict between them at start? I was worried they might fly at the mesh to get at each other! They are both easy going birds alone, but wondered if ime in for any trouble! Both quiet birds, so wouldnt like to have them screeming at each other and taunting each other up. There will be no way of them getting eac

People mention Astro turf sometimes as though its all the same dont they! Is there a right type and a wrong type? And a deffinate NoNo type!
-
Cheers for that! Mind at rest! You know what its like being new to the game, you worry about the slightest thing, lol. Reading 'the modern aprentice' I got worried big time, lol. Cheers again.
-
It seems that a lot of the garden centres are selling it lately! Not cheap though! We have a Turf suppiers down bridgend way that sell Astro as well. They fit the stadiums out.
-
Ok ? Right then, my Female Harris leaves me a Green Mute sometimes. Not all the time, but say every other day I find one or two on the floor! Ive read a bit about Green mutes not being good! I know I dont feed her anything with lead in it, so that rules out Lead poisoning I hope! Can you please take a look at the pic and see what you think. Is this a normal sight? I was told it could be the ox heart she haqs sometimes with her chicks. Cheers.
-
Did you have any luck on chicks Jay? I pay 8.50 for 200, so probably a bit more than you would want to pay, but the guy in Bridgend gets them regular. He also breeds his own quail and sells them and the quail eggs. The Chics themselves are from honeybrook, but I pay that much as I only have a couple of boxes at a time! Good luck on the birds first outing butt! My Jessy is anchoring to go out so I wont be long venturing into the unknown also, lol.

She is going to be real pissed off with me soon, she spends ages by the door mesh watching the world, bars will hinder her view, lol. Main thing is, her tail feathers will be a lot safer which counts more! Tell me guys! She is freelofted at moment in her mews! I want to put a weathering structure with a bow perch in it, closer to where we sit in the garden. Is there a typical size of structure to build for a female HH? Would a six foot wide by five foot high be ok?
-
could do fine, is there not a lot of sidewards play in them, or how much middle support do you put in?
-
Thats a good size Millet sir! Dont want to worry you, but I think the dog has eaten the bird! Is that pea gravel on the floor? Ive heard a lot of the boys talking about it!
-
Ive got it all to come. Hopefully! As MrGun says, let them have their wings if they wanna, as they have a keener eye than us mere humans, lol. Congrats to Scarlet! And congrats to you too an capturing the event on a pic!
-
(She will sharp destroy her tail on that mesh Ken..i would change it ASAP to bar's.. ) Yeh! I agree Millet Sir! My thoughts exactly, but it was a quick conversion to get the housing done to get her away from where she was! She is pretty calm so don't thrash about the mesh much at all. Not to say that I havent had a few heart stopping occations when she arguse with Aladdin my Saluki mind. Will be doing my best to upgrade to the bars very soon, as wall as the roof!
-
My housing is set up for a Female Harris hawk. Ime not realy that happy with the mess as it is, and I am adding a flight to the front soon. I cringe everytime she lands in the mesh!
-
I agree fully about hoods! They keep a bird calm in awkward situations. Ime deff going to get a casting jacket soon as anyway, one of those things that you wish you had at hand on ocations and you havent!
-
Thinking of changing the square mesh I have on the mews to bars. I imagine its gonna be more hawk freindly and especialy feather freindly. Also when the flight is added soon, I would like to consider using bars on that as well instead of the mesh I had planned on. What diameter bars and what would be the ideal gap, for a Harris Hawk. Is there any particular material that would be recomended to use for the bars? And would it be a good idea to slip a pvc tube over them? Thanks.

Sounds easy in theory Grovsey, but you have to know exactly what your doing with that dremil not to do damage to its beak! We had the Kestrel done by someone who does it regular, and it was real fiddly, the bird needs to have a lot of trust in you to hold still, even if you are manhandling her to keep her still. The noise isnt going to go down well, lol. Dentists come to mind, lol.
