They aren't illegal in the US, they aren't here either. They were designed simply as a way of increasing velocity not for anything dodgy. J.

...or other land provided that you have checked that it's cleared by the local FLO for the calibre you intend to use first. Do you need to inform Firearms Dept if you shoot on another permission? (assuming its passed calibre) And also do you need to send written permission? (As when applying) If your cert allows you to shoot on any piece of land then that is what you can do. As long as you have permission to shoot on the land you do not need to inform the cops of anything and there is no requirement for the land to be "passed" by the cops for using a particular calibre on.

The law is exactly the same although it may be administered differently from force to force. There is nothing in law which says what conditions as to land use have to go on the certificate. The terms "open" an "closed" are used to describe whether you can shoot over any land or just certain bits of land. These conditions are applied by the licensing authority (the cops) depending on what they think is appropriate. J.

Personally, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Have a look at the club and shoot various rifles during your probationary period. Once you get your FAC buy whatever takes your fancy. You should have no problems getting authorisations for at least 4 guns on your first application so you'll have plenty of opportunity to get different stuff. J.

I clean every time it goes out. Flytie, How do you find the cleaning with the Federal 140gr MOLY stuff? I can never seem to get a clean patch no matter how many times i jag and patch / brush the bore even with the use of Tetra solvent? I can push out blue patches all day! Copper fouling is extremely difficult to remove and even a tiny amount left in the bore will produce blue patches. Only time I've ever managed to get barrels totally clean is with the FoulOut machine. Still takes a while though. J.

Never heard of that before. What did it look like after it had gone off - did the bras split or had the bullet just separated from the case? J.

Then they shouldn't be. You need to show "good reason" to possess a firearm which is not the same thing. Even the HO guidance says something along the lines of "Good reason should neither be equated with desire nor restricted to need". Do you have a good reason in law to possess the firearm in question; if "yes" then you should be granted a cert for it. J.

Expanding ammo (or the bullets for it) are sec.5 but can be possessed on an FAC under certain conditions. Basically, for shooting animals - where authority for them will be given automatically, and for deer it is a legal requrement that you use them - or if you are a collector. J.

I rarely clean rifles, should probably do it more often. Best thing I've found to clean bores is the Outers Foul-Out machine. You'd be amazed at how much crap comes out of your barrel. What I was surprised at when I cleaned the barrel of a .308 I've had for years was the amount of lead it brought out - even though I can't ever remember firing lead bullets through it. All I can assume is that it's been stuff that's been vaporised off the base of FMJ bullets or, more likely I think, from the primer as they use a lead-based explosive. J.

People have shot from boats for hundreds of years. Punt guns, for instance. J.

The provision about shooting within 50 feet of a highay only applies of someone is interuppted or endangered as a consequense of your shooting. If you are 51 feet away you do not commit the offence reagrdless of how much you interupt or endanger them. As I say from my previous post, I don't think that a canal is a highway but I'm prepared to be corrected on that. That would likely only amount to tresspass though, not a criminal offence. J.
-
Only if a car drove down it!!! Never heard a boat called a "Vehicle"! I stand to be corrected if someone can produce a different bit of legislation! Can't see why a boat isn't a vehicle. Having said that - I think the strict definition of a "highway" is something which incorporates a cariageway which would preclude a canal. J.

There was supposed to be a 2.7mm Kolibri round but there is some question as to whether it was a different round to the 3mm or was just the same one with a different name. J.

.14 Cal equipment

17HMR is were it's at, and it is a 0.170 NOT a 0.177! You can also get (God knows who would want such a thing??) a .17 Remington Centrefire, when there are many other and much less troublesome calibres out there i.e. .223, 22.250, .243 etc etc. Yeah. You could build a .14 rifle but no factory ammo available even in the States. Jonothon an here has a .14 Ric Isn't it a necked down Hornet or something like that? Mine is a .14 Walker which is a necked down and blown-out Hornet case. As Ric mentions there are others including some based on .22rf brass. Pulling, re-workin

It should be noted that the notification that you send to the cops must be sent via recorded delivery. J.

Cracking little round .22 Hornet. Actually a good one to get for foxes as its reloadable so you can learn that too. It hasn't been too popular in recent years so quite a few good deals on them about - although popularity seems to be picking up recently. J.
-
Agreed. You may or may not get .17 rim-fire for foxes but it isn't going to get your SGC pulled if they don't issue an FAC. In fact, having the former will work in your favour as the only reason they could come up with for refusing an FAC would be that you didn't have "good reason" for the particular firearms you wanted to acquire; the only other ones relate to not being fit to be entrusted with a firearm and if that were the case you wouldn't have been granted an SGC to start with! J.

I think that what this discussion distills down to is that there are far too many possible variables for the problem to be diagnosed through an internet forum. J.

If your certificate restricts you to a particular piece, or pieces, of land then that/those are the only ones you can shoot on. How long it takes depends upon force area and even then it can vary wildly from time to time depending on what they have on at the time. There is a period every few years when lots of cert's come up for renewal because it changed several years back from 3 years to 5 so all the ones which were originally on the 3 year rota all come up over a 3 year period and the remaing 2 years are quiet. This is why my force area is currently taking 10 bloody weeks to renew or is

I certainly wish you the bst of luck. You sound thoroughly sensible and mature and I doubt you will have too many problems. I think you're spot-on with your assesment of the chamberings you will be needing too. One thing, and I may be wrong, but I think that you have to be 18 to actually use your FAC to buy firearms and ammunition. You can have the certificate at 17 though. If I were you, I'd also look at joining a target shooting club as this will give you a great opportunity to get a lot more practice in and to talk to other shooters who really know their stuff. Google it or check wh

But you still have that right at law. You still have to show the police that you have a right to a SGC; for instance you have to show that you are not a prohibited person, are not a danger to public safety or the peace, haven't got problems with drugs or alcohol, etc. You have to show all these things for an FAC but you just need to show one more thing along with it - "good reason" in law. Essentially, the police have to show exactly the same thing to refuse an FAC application as they do a SGC application - it's just that you have to state your reason up front. You cannot start off fro

I sort of agree but it's not a case of what you have a right to, but what you require. If you have a genuine reason to own a particular calibre and amount of ammunition you will have no problems. If you just fancy a .223 or whatever because it is cool and you want 3000 rounds for the sake of it (slight poetic license here) then you will have to justify yourself. Oh, and I would suggest that a .308 is more dangerous than an air rifle, back stop or not I agree with the above You do not have the rightto a Firearms Certificate, you have to provide a Good Reason to acquire it an

sorry to pop your bubble mate but just saying your applying for 243 for fox and deer and for zeroing of rifle on ranges and land over which i lawfully have authority to shoot wont just get you a open ticket. not many people get open right away. inless you can prove someway of shooting them you need it for your job say ? the police will check the land to see if its past. they wouldnt just hand out a open fac and then let the person go where ever they have permission. it takes time to get open. inless your lucky. all guns are a danger as we no. but giving some one a 243 on open is scary
