Quite honestly, it wouldn't bother me any more if he'd been wandering about with a 20mm anti-tank rifle. They are both perfectly capable to killing people. Besides, all the media were doing was reporting what witnesses said and, personally, I don't take too much notice of what most people say about firearms and you have to try and weigh up all of the reports and come to your own conclusions. Just because the media say something doesn't mean they are right. Another witness report, this time by a doctor, said he attended someone in the street who had serious shotgun wounds. I'd be inclined to pu

I read that and, yes, Heffer is an idiot. His entire article was basically a diatribe telling the world that it was fine to ban anything he didn't personally own. After all this time it seems that some shooters still haven't grasped the concept of the phrase "we must all hang together or we will most certainly hang separately". J.

Because he has no experience of firearms and bases all his comments on what he sees on the TV. He wasn't a journmalist, just a witness. J.

They had no way of stopping him.

The guy was all over the news the day it happend. To be fair he dosn't know anything about firearms and was just saying what he saw. He doesn't have anything on which to base his observations on. J.

Shotgun Transfer to A different licence
JonathanL replied to benbenukuk's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Depends how long you think the gap will be. Have a word with your FEO they might be able to issue a temp cert to cover the gap. Shouldn't be too difficult to add it to your dads cert. The cops should issue a temp permit if you put yours in in anything like a reasonable time frame. They rarely do, however. It's easy to put a shgotgun on another ticket as you don't need a slot as you do with an FAC. Just notify the cops that you have done it. To be honest, all the guns should be on both certs anyway if you are sharing a cabinet as you both have access to them. J. -
IM SO FED UP OF MANUAL SCALES
JonathanL replied to arveyboy's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
http://www.midwayuk.com/apps/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?SaleItemID=658771 theyre good theyre just SO DAMN SLOW I don't think that an electronic scale is going to speed you up any. To be honest, my RCBS uniflow usually throws to within a couple of tenths of a grain (depending on what powder you are using) so something like that is probably the best way to speed things up and, in reality, is going to be at least as accurate (if not more so) than an electronic scale. Bottom line is that any method by which you measure each charge is going to be slow. J. -
He doesn't have a choice in this respect. If your good reason is "target shooting" then it is a requirement in law that you be a full member of a club approved by the Home Office for the type of firearm you are applying for. However, it makes little difference as I think a range use condition is put on as standard anyway of you have land use. Eeven if it wasn't you are a probationary member of the club so your use of your rifle (or any rifle, for that matter) at the club range is catered for by the club's Home Office approval. J.

The form they send out has no legal force, you are not required to fill it in. The requirement to make the notification comes from sec.33 of the Firearms (amendment) Act; Sec.33 As sub-section (3) says, the notification "shall" (which means "must") be sent via recorded delivery but need to be in any particular form as long as it meets the other requirements of s.33. J.

Really ? They only just gave a me a .22 Depends on the circumstances of the individual application though. J.

IM SO FED UP OF MANUAL SCALES
JonathanL replied to arveyboy's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
Depends what you use them for. Are you weighing every charge or do you just use them to calibrate a powder dispenser? If the former then it probably isn't goong to speed up your loading and if that latter then why go to something less accurate? Electrnic scales are all very well but the 0.2 grain accuracy of those ones is not desperately impressive. Normal beam-balance scales are calibrated in 0.1 grain increments but, in reality, are actually far more accurate than that as you can see a variation by even the thickness of the indicator line - if you see what I mean. You do not have to return your FAC to the cops when you acquire a firearm. Given how long my local force takes to deal with FAC's I'd strongly advise letting them getr hold of it for any reason at all. Not the problem of the people in the department as they are grossly understaffed. I don't know what form they are giving you to fill in to notify them of new guns but there is no officially required form to do this. You can just do it by letter. I forget what the precise information that is required is but it's along the lines of what is necessary to identify the individual gun. Also you

I used to have one years back. Recoil isn't that bad but is at he upper end of what you would get in a military rifle. It's more than you get from a .44 mag rifle, about what you'd get from a .308, although you probably perceive it as being a bit stiffer as the stock isn't particularly well designed to manage recoil. The main contributing factor to recoil (other than gun weight) is bullet weight, a .303 uses about a 170-180 grain bullet which moves a bit slower than the same weight bullet in a .308. It's easily manageable - hundreds of millions of rounds were fired through these things in two

Meet the new Accuracy International AX series....

Err, those pics are of a Rem 700 action. Very, very bonny though. J. -
"That is one construction of the law" Suggesting that, in his opinion, the law is somewhat ambiguous on the point. And then there's the argument that pits the INTENT of a law with the LETTER of the law. Unless there is precedent to clarify the situation it's rather a gray area. Well yes, that's my entire point. As to precident. I can't find a case which deals with the precise situation. The one the comment was made in reference to was relating to a guy who had a a shotgun and a rifle (both in certs) and who was found in possession of a mod. The case doesn't mention what the mod was desi

Can't really think of anywhere unless you can find a friendly dealer to keep it for you but he'll charge. The other alternative is if you have a mate who also has a SGC and he keeps it for you in his cabinet. You would have to be careful though that he dosn't give you access to his cabinet unless all his guns were also on your ticket and all of yours were on his. J.

Of course it's possible I'm wrong, that's why we have courts to settle these kind of things. I'm not trying to prove you're breaking the law at all - I have no interest in getting you locked up or anything. I just think it's good that we have proper discussions about the law because it's an important point about owning firearms. You can't always simply take what the authorities tell you as gospel. Like I pointed out abouve - many firearms departments will tell you that it's perfectly ok to email or fax in your notiication of having acquired a gun when, in actual fact, the Act says that
-
They don't always know everything. Lots of licensing departments tell that you can fax in the notification when you acuire a firearm but the law says you mustsend it by recorded delivery. The department is wrong on that score. Because air rifles can be possessed, purchased or acquired without an FAC because Sec.1 creates an exemption for them. Because of this so then can their accessories. However, I'm still of the opinion that if a mod is designed to be used on a Sec.1 firearm then it needs to be on FAC regardless of what you intend to use it on. If it were designed only be used on a
-
All you can do is apply the wording of the Act to the specific item. Is it an accessory to a firearm? Is it designed to reduce the noise or flash caused by discharging the firearm? If you can answer both questions with a "yes" then it's subject to Sec.1 controls. You then have to ask whether it's exempt from needing an FAC. Sub 12 ft/lb air rifles are exempt and do are their component parts and accessories. From that it would seem that a mod for such a gun would not need an FAC but the problem is that if it is designed to be used on a Sec.1 firearm as well it would because whichever way you cu

This sounds pretty implausible to me. Lead is far denser than steel so a bullet would have to be much longer for a given weight. Range would be severely reduced as, realistically, you wouldn't get anywhere near the weight you wanted so it would lose velocity much quicker. The contamination argument doesn't really wash either; lead bullets have been used for hundreds of years and billions were fired in very concentrated areas (like the Somme) and we don't seem to hear about long-standing contamination problems. I wonder if this is actualy some specialty round for a particular job like pier

This isn't correct, it can't be. Section 57 of the act defines what a firearm is, it says; 57 Interpretation. (1)In this Act, the expression “firearm†means a lethal barrelled weapon of any description from which any shot, bullet or other missile can be discharged and includes— (a)any prohibited weapon, whether it is such a lethal weapon as aforesaid or not; and (b)any component part of such a lethal or prohibited weapon; and ©any accessory to any such weapon designed or adapted to diminish the noise or flash caused by firing the weapon; Section 1 creates the

Hmmm, I'm not so sure that that's right. A mod is a firearm in its own right and you cannot transfer firearms to cert holders unless it's done face-to-face. You may not get done for it but that isn't the same as saying it's legal. J.

.22 shot ammo won't burst a ballon at 15 yards. .22 Super Kolibri (which is a very short round) is very inacurate - I think it's designed for european parlour guns or something. Unless very close you won't hit anything. J.

All police statations are also supposed to keep them. Make sure they give you 2 referee forms too. J.
