  1. I picked up my son from his house at eight this morning and headed north to the penines, we were ferreting the slopes around some very steep quarrys there were a million holes and the terrain too dangerous for running dogs (Well for our dogs anyway). So the decision was made early on in the week to shoot the bolters. We arrived in dense fog and driving rain so we sat for a bit then collared up big trev and flash little eileen hasnt got a collar yet. The rain eased enough to get up the hill and our first bury was decided upon. A bit of history here, my mate and i used to shoot 15 years a
  2. on one of my bits i tend to bolt a few rats in amongst the rabbits ive never had a ferret bit but i understand it happens, bets get the terriers on the job
  3. well if me and the wife were speaking she could do it but i cant (see my other post)
  4. Got 30 newly made oak pegs for my nets from a carpenter mate yesterday chuffed to bits with them.Took them out of my work bag and left them in the kitchen in a plastic bag with the thought to drill them and attach them to the nets after work. Came back in from work this afternoon to find the missus with her feet up in front of the log fire. " Darling says i have you seen that bag with my new pegs in?" "Where did you leave them says she?" "In the kitchen says i" a long silence follows " i thought they were sticks to start the fire!" "Oh for fucks sake says i!!!!"
  5. I have copied and pasted this from facebook as a request from a friend and a bit of pressure from the wife!! to spread the word about the theft of these pet ferrets. i know its a long shot and loads of ferrets are knicked every year but if you do know anything please let me know and i will sort it out. The language the lady uses is very flowery and i have know idea what the colours are but just read it and remember these are pet owners. Cheers Keith I have had two very unusual ferrets taken/escape/stolen/missing from one of my hutches this morning. Craghead Stanley area DH9 postco
  6. couldnt be arsed to turn it on! looks complicated
  7. Big Trev - albino hob Eileen - sandy jill Flash - silver jill Blondie - albino never named ferrets before but this batch has been named i have no idea why it just sort of happened
  8. thanks lads im paying for it this morning, my backs in knots. Its allways worth it though
  9. next time john i wasnt exactly sure if she is old enough yet, she is a little cracker though and im sure she will do well, ive called her blondie. very happy with the mk3 by the way flash killed in twice today but when we dug to her she moved on so we never did get the dead rabbits. sods law!!
  10. Picked up my lad and his saluki type jet from his place at 7 this morning. Destination watership down. The star turns were big trev last years and two young jills flash, a little silver and eileen, a tiny sandy. All being carried in my proto type back pack ferret/net carrying box box (Specially made so at least when i fall over i have two hands free to save myself, Arthritis is great fun!!) backing me up was the clinically insane Maggie ( kelpi/grew). The first thing evident when we got there that there was way too much cover to even go near the hedgerow sets so the plan was to sti
  11. does it bite ex wives as well if so i will give you good money for it!! on second thoughts it would only bite her once then die of poisoning
  12. definately sounds like a flea allergy, maybe even mange (Quite rare).whats he bedded on ? gut the hutch and scrub it out and then de flea it all and him. my lot dont seem to get flea trouble but i have seen it before. Failing that its the vets and then your into money and how much do you value the old lad. Vets are the biggest bandits in the country even with insurance i wouldnt like to think of the hundreds of pounds ive paid out for the dogs but hey thats stock keeping for you.
  13. just design and build your own bud, im no joiner but i have built a few over the years. make sure its easy to clean out and that its draft proof and solid. i have a three tier set up that can either be one big hutch or during the breeding season three seperate hutches, its 6 foot high, two foot wide and six foot long. each floor has a removable sleeping box. i used to have a big court 8 x 4 x 3 with a small dog kennel in it for the sleeping box but i couldnt get in to clean it out when the arthritis flared up so a more practical solution was needed. good luck
  14. my hob trev is a bit hit and miss when working but he is a canny old soul so he can plod on and i wont curse him too much
  15. is she bored and just discovered the pleasures of digging? does her personality change when she is digging? by that i mean does she appear distressed, slavering and a bit blank in her eyes? is she fixated on digging or can you stop her with your voice?
  16. Thanks people, i will keep everyone informed as time progresses
  17. brilliant sensible answers, if this was on the lurcher forum i would have had a character assasination by now No harm in asking ripstop just to see when he is breeding his next litter but i definately am going to research this pup before i get it.
  18. i have been promising myself a cocker spaniel for almost a year now in a few months my quest will become serious. im looking for the most respected, consistent, and forward thinking breeder in the uk. Who is it ?where are they and why do you think they meet the criteria? i am hoping my new pup will be a worker first and maybe go on to trial depending on how capable i can be. There are hundreds of litters being bred and its always pot luck no matter the lineage, but i reckon a good dog is 70% breeding and 30% handling. its a serious request and in time i will blog the pups progress.
  19. Nic your honesty in dealing with this problem is commendable. and i wouldnt beat yourself up too much you know where you went wrong and now you have resolved to put it right. My biggest problem is my temper and i know not to even try training when im in a mood, ive made a lot of mistakes in the past when training dogs and it can be a slow process putting things right
  20. ive never seen one in the field but my dogs mother was one and she seemed easy going and worked picking up. however every pet chocolate lab ive met seems nuts,
  21. just a question but do they train you in how to go on when you get the dog back? because if you are no further experienced the dog will lapse? im no expert but i know that a lot of dogs get issues from owners inexperience. i wish you well mate and i hope the lad does well. its a credit to you that you have persevered a lot of dogs just get passed on
  22. your dog isnt gun shy, she has another issue with guns maybe been battered because she is a bit nervous. she is young but needs time and the above advice is excellent.
  23. Running that hard ground they must have feet like concrete slabs, be interesting to see a cross like that used in the uk. Unfortunately they seem to be treat worse than we treat our running dogs over here
