Our tomato sauce is actually a Jamie Oliver recipe, much nicer than the bottled stuff I know what you mean about the supermarkets driving the price of milk down but we can still get it cheaper from the grocer. We hate the supermarkets though they get you in with one cheap product and then rip you off with the rest of them. Also there is something very strange about looking at fruit and veg which is all exactly the same size and shape and no blemishes or dirt on them. It's made people squeamish about a tiny mark on an apple, I've seen people throw away fruit because of the smallest thing.

This is what Oliver is getting at. It's miles cheaper to make your own food than buy packaged crap from the supermarket. In fact supermarkets aren't cheap at all, veg is more expensive, eggs & milk more expensive. Meat is worse quality for the same money as a good butcher. Like you say Wilf 10 quid gets you a sh*t tonne of food from a decent grocer but people are lazy and that is what the supermarket likes.

Yeh read The Gamekeeper by Ian Niall it just shows what a dangerous business it was on both sides. You could easily end up getting shot or have the crap beat out of you. Certainly in that book it doesn't give the romantic impression of the Poacher.
