What to put over this bitch
wee gemm hunter replied to Night_Runner's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Your mate's obviously looking for other peoples opinions, but at the end of the day it's his opinion that counts, my opinion, she's to young. -
You'r spot on about " a wee greet"I've had a few over the years mainly with dogs breaking their necks on a chase, it never gets any easier. If I ever visit my sister in Sidney I'll get in touch if I'm still fit enough by that time atb

Sorry to hear about your loss Ned, but I'm sure you'r like myself, and have a wee greet when nobody's about then get on with it. Some great pics and stories, A wee question Ned do you ever get bit by your own dogs when your trying to help out, as I've been bit on more than one occasion and I'm not hunting boar, it's always been unintentional on the dogs part though. I was speaking to my sister the other night on the phone, she lives in Sidney, she was telling me her daughter's boyfriend's ranch in Cooma [i think that's the spelling] was over run with kangaroos, he has shot three thous

Is it a knocked up toe?
wee gemm hunter replied to whippetwoman's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
I assume you have checked his pads for cuts and between them in webs,? if you can't find any sign of cuts or thorns in the pads it will be more than likely be an injury to a bone, you may have to take him to the vet, atb. -
yeah i totally agree its suprising what the heavyer breeds can catch and shame you get him to the grey. you would of had some sport on your hands then. do you think everythink has changed in the hunting world since those days for good or bad Things have changed dramatically and for the worse, when we were boys people in the country were all of the same mind. People would ask you if you could get rid of rabbits under their garden sheds, some farmers would tell you where the hares were lying, the neighbours would shout out the windows when you got back to see if you had any spare rabbits.[

We ran a pack of mongrels in the mid/ late sixties, the leader of the pack was an Alsation/collie [REX] This dog would hunt from morning till night, never knew anything about lamping in those days,You would be hard pushed to find a better hunter anywhere,we intended to breed him with a full gru as we got a bitch from the flapping tracks that was turning its head. We got the bitch fit on hares and rabbits but before we got the chance to breed it, my mates old man sold it for drink money back to a greyhound man who went on to win races with the bitch after us putting the work into it. Rex would

a peregrine??????? Seems you don't believe me farlap, My son bought me a gift for a birthday and it was a day at a Perthshire falconry centre, I told the guy who was taking the course about the Peregrine and he shot me down in flames, when I told him the boy's name with the falcon, it turned out that he had taught him, I told him to phone him if he doubted me. The boy stayed on the outskirts of Dundee, he owned different types of birds of prey, He offered me a day out with an eagle on hares but I never took him up on his offer as hares was my game in those days and it went against

The problem with[ daytime coursing ] is you need a dog that looks like it can kill a hare, I know there was a guy on with a pic of his dog saying that it could kill hares, but he's a lamper, you don't need any fancy dog to take a hare on the lamp,a farm collie will take hares on a lamp, and while I'm at it these guys with bull x's for foxes WHY the same collie will do the job and you could walk the length of the country with a collie at your side without a second look. I'm not saying anything bad about lampers it's just a different form of hunting and the original post was DAYTIME COURSING.

Dan ,no greyhounds in the uk are selected to kill, and they only run a couple of bends on a track. Irish coursing which is still legal is all about pace on the run up.Some of their dogs are huge. I would not want a coursing greyhound, as one with a good mouth is actually undesirable, what is needed for that discipline is a dog that is fast and agile ,has a modicum of stay[for a greyhound],one that wins the run up ,turns the hare several times to amass points ,it has no relevance to hunting. Coursing greyhounds that run to kill and use their gob,ie hang off waiting for the other dog to tur

dogs with to much greyhound in them.dont get better when they are worked hard they go back wards Are you saying that if you run a dog once a week it's going to learn more than a dog thats run 3 or 4 times a week. I'm not talking about 8hr shifts I'm talking talking 2 or 3 chases, all depending on how hard the runs are, would you say the red bitch in my pics is to greyhoundish, got her as an adult, totally hyper surprised she never killed herself, now she is a lot more calmer and would have no problem running all day if I asked her to, and she is fast just learned to control it. it

I've owned fast dogs in the past and they could kill with ease, the faster the better as far as I'm concerned, they learn how to control their running with work ,It's not rocket science the more work they get the better they become.

does anyone ever use pure greyhounds?
wee gemm hunter replied to langouroux's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Slipper what gives you the right to run down full grus when you say you've never owned one, Langouroux Forget about a track dog get yourself a pup and bring it up as you would a lurcher pup, they learn how to control their speed. Maybe not the best hunters, but had them jumping, killing and carrying to hand -
Mines was a black Hillman Minx about 1971 was in good nick when I got it from a posh woman in Bearsden, glasgow, didn't stay in good nick for long throwing manky dogs in to it. When it was time for it to go, me and a couple of mates took it up a farm path, at the far end was a huge pile of horse manure with straw through it, my daft mate sat on the roof and I wellied it, the idea was I would run it into the shxt and he would get a soft landing,I hit it that hard I nearly knocked myself out and he flew over the top missing it altogether, the three of us managed to limp home in one piece.

Brilliant post, had to fill coal sacks for my uncle on a Saturday morning{late 60s} in return for the rest of the day ferreting under the railway coaches, then sell the rabbits to the butcher,We ran a pack of the neighbours dogs, all mongrels, collies, alsations, labs, boxers, spaniels, setters, terriers, a collie/gru and the occasional greyhound that was no good for the track,Friday night was ratting night. We had at the packs peak 14 dogs. We would head up to the coup tooled up with sticks, air rifles, slings, bricks, tuck the troosers in to the socks and get wired in. Sunday morning was great,As I

Anti freeze is lethal, normally go into a drunken state, my mate phoned me one night distraught, told me he was out with his dog and it had been eating scraps out of a plastic bag, told me symptoms told him to get milk down its neck then get it to vet as soon as possible,he took the dog and the bag to the vet. Scraps in bag saturated in anti freeze, dog lived and still catching.
