  1. for how long a period of time would you define constantly? thanks for your help, joel.
  2. the jill did not squeal, and the foot was only swelled up about an hour after i discovered her and released her foot.normally she runs straight to the sleeping box when she has the meat and is no where near the door. when i released her she was fine, i picked her up looked at the foot and she seemed fine, she seems to be getting more mobile every time i go to check on her.
  3. i have felt the foot and tried bending the toes, and she seems fine, like im not touching her?
  4. i was feeding my wee jil last hight in the dark. the person i got her off apparently has 180 breeding ferrets, and the jill i have is extremely possesive of food, to the extent that if you wave meat in front of the cage and she cant get it, she will go mental, whining scratching and screaming. i believe this to be that she never had a lot of food when she was young. anyway, i have tried to train her about food, but to no avail. amyway, when i feed her, i chuck the food in and quickly close the hutch door as i have too many times had my finger latched onto in her frsntic search for the food in
  5. cat strength frontline, not petshop
  6. i would always steer clear of merle collie crosses personally, as i live in the dales in thick sheep country and have never ever seen a merle collie working, the only ones i have seen are kc with their hips grinded to shit. what are you looking for in terms of body shape? you see stock small very hairy collies, and long thin leggy collies, smooth haired. do people consider this or are the feet/working/temperment more important? cheers, joel.
  7. when people first cross collie greys, whippets etc to or to lujrcher blood, what do you ACTUALLY look for in te collie, ie what is the perfect collier to use? people always say working collie, but why? cheers, joel.
  8. be prepared to handle any given situation before you purchase an animal that is well capable of biting.
  9. its natural to a ferret, if its hungry it will eat it.
  10. a wild ferret would never come into contact with milk in the wild, and even a small portion is big in comparison to a ferret.
  11. to me, the ferrets in my hutch are wild apart from their temperments. and i once read, for us to get the best out of an animal, we must replicate their natural behaviour. now i cant let them run around in the garden, but i can feed them like a ild polecat, namely meat and what they would find/catch in the wild. bread and milk is not found in the wild, and a ferret is not designed to digest either effiecntly, so it is pointless and possibly damaging feeding bread and milk, as it is filling stomach space where meat and all the goodness and vitamins and minerals could be being digested, just my t
  12. ferrets are carnivores and eat meat, they are designed to eat meat, bread is not meat.
  13. theres a pony tail young guy at clitheroe that my freind was forced to give 5 hobs away free to, as noone would buy them in the auction and the other guy at clitheroe, i dont think he has been raided, or if he has, hes restocked as he was there last week with ferrets, he was saying they ate owt, and he just chicks carcasses in, lambs cats etc. the jill i got off him is as wild as a stoat with regards to food.
  14. storeys guide to raising rabbits is an interesting read i have tried to raise my own meat rabbits before with pure californians and to be honest mate, it isnt worth the hassle and expense.
  15. i was talking to a rough looking bloke at clitheroe auction, who said not counting his youngstock, had 180 breeding ferrets. i have bought a jill kit off him in the past, and it goes mental near food, which i think is linked to the fact it never had much when it was young. but he has all different types of ferret every week, in the boxes on the back of his flatbed.
  16. took the ferrets to a show today, i was taking poultry anyway and i thought it would be a nice experience for the ferrets. well first of all,, i have kept a lot of different animals, and there are weirdos in all circles, but ferrets is the weirdest. there are some fecking weirdos doing it, bloody hell i got a shock. anyway, the ferrets had a ood time and were passed around the tent being held by the public etc, which will of been a new experience to them. one thing to say, is that they were slightly shocked i intend to work my ferrets, and appalled that i didnt rescue them anyway, all in all
  17. tales of a rat hunting man is one of the best books ive ever read, i must of read it cover to cover at least 3 times, i love it.
  18. which do you prefer? in a "which does the ferret look better condition wise?" mine have only ever really had meat and carcass to eat, they have rabbit, rabbit heads (a particular favourite, and i dont like to waste good food and they strip it down to the skull which is fun to see) all different ages of chickens, old hens, spare cockerels, male chicks, drowned chicks etc, debreasted shot wood pigeons, shot feral pigeons, dead pheasant poults off the road (fresh) and ive even been known to go to the auction and get a massive fat old lop eared pet bunny and giver this to the ferrets, its cheap a
  19. i let my ferrets eat the head even when it has a pellet in, they strip it down to the skull and their fine
  20. thanks, i thought they would be too young but id rather ask and look like a tw4t than have 20 unwanted ferret kits
  21. hi, i have 2 jills and an accidentally aquired hob living together in one hutch. the jills were born in may and the hob in april. they are all getting on fine but i have seen the hob trying to mount the jills. my question is will the jills gt pregnant? my plan was to seperate the hob and jills in spring before the jills come into season, and then jab etc. i definetly do not want kits especially in autumn, as this to me is a fools errand and id rather let someone with deep pockets spend a lot of money on a litter of kits when you can pick up a decent working ferret kit for a fiver thanks for
