Yep always de-piss them first. Like ditch shitter I do this as soon as they are dead. Then as everyone says cut from below the rib-cage down as far as you need to go. I ended needing stitches last month using a blunt knife to do this job which slipped into my finger so be careful. Once you get good at it you can do it on a barbed wire fence when you forget your knife. Always a good trick to know.

Aye the one on the right is. As you can see shes no that wee any more She does the job though

Well done magwitch you arent half getting through them bunnies !

Im with ya on that one mate! Only a few of the warrens on all the land I do are in the middle of the field. The majority are mostly on thick thick prickly hedges, or underneath big bramble bushes. Where I was out yesterday was quite good, they were all along fences and tree lines at the edge of fields but not too much cover to worry about. But yea most of the time in the ferreting season my hands and especially my knuckles are cut to shreds from thorns etc!

Haha! You should have seen how f****n long it took me to get the thing off my phone onto the computer!!!

Me and swandog1 off this site were out today with some of our ferrets doing a few warrens along hedges and fences. From the first few warrens we had about 8 rabbits, and we hadnt even been out too long, all of them were bolters, then we did a nice wee 4 holer under a couple of small trees along a fence. While we were bloody netting the warren a rabbit poked his wee head out of one of the holes that was unnetted, I thought it would go back down once it saw me but the feckin thing bolted! Couldnt bloody belive it !! So anyway we put a couple of ferrets down and get a rabbit bolting into t

whats the weirdest thing you've eaten?
gibby replied to greatwhitehunter's topic in Living Off The Land & Game Cooking
A couple of times Ive felt a bit "weird" after eating these mushrooms that grow on the football field near me , but that was years ago! -
Good pics of tyson there mate. Was a good night with the lamp last night. Tyson did well he was a little unlucky at times though, let me know when you want to get out again mate. Cheers

I feed my ferrets every night shortly before I go to bed, for no reason other than habit. Theres always some left over in the morning to be removed anyway so I just take the ferrets out straight away in the morning, works for me. I agree with ditch in the fact that I always give them some heart and lungs etc, when Im putting them back in there box for the journey home, just to let em know they've done a good days work

I would just try her out on her own first, on a few small warrens to see if she gets the hang of it. Most of the ferrets Ive owned havent took any real persuasion to go down there first rabbit hole. I almost always work them on there own first of all then put an experienced ferret in after them to bolt any that they missed. But try to do as small a warren as possible to start with i.e. 6-8 holes or less.

Yea I saw that advert yesterday I think, WTF!

In case anyones interested, I managed to get my girlffriend to change her mind, and then went out and got some rats yesterday (from pets at home- told ya I wasnt scared of petshops ). Here they are, this is the buck: And this is the doe: They are from different litters hence why the male is smaller. From the first litter I will be keeping 3 females and a male, so that I can have a total of 1 male and two females in each cage, and go from there. Cheers for all the advice above folks, gibby

just do it if she cares about you she will learn to live with it i would say different if you lived together then its a joint decision but if shes only coming round then she doesn't have to have anything to do with them. Ferret15, thanks! Ill let you know how it goes!
-
Well my girlfriend has blown the idea out of the water and says she wont come round if I have rats (even though they will be outside in the shed). She says that Im not alllowed gerbils, rats, mice, hamsters or anything! Which is being a bit dramatic dont you think cos we've already got a hamster! So Ill try and persuade her over the next few days since Ive just went and bought the bloody waterbottles and dishes
-
Cheers chubs I think Im going to go for it. Ive kept/bred them before they were ace pets. And your right I thought they smelled less than mice too. Cheers guys
-
Thanks for the advice guys. Im going to sit down tonight and write out roughly what Im planning to spend, then double it, then see if I think it will be worth it. I know what your saying about mice being easier to breed but for a similar amount of effort I will get less food, I would think anyway. Have been reading reptile forums too, a lot of those guys have a LOT of gear, and a LOT of rodents! Ive bred hamsters before, they are difficult as the males and females must be kept in seperate cages apart from when they are mating. And when I bred rats I must admit I didnt own the male I

Ditch, I know what your saying mate, but its just an idea y'know? We buy day old chicks for the birds and the ferts get the occasional one or two (its my mums partner that owns the birds, and the ferrets are mine) and your right they are very cheap, but from the same supplier we get them from frozen rats are about £1.50 each. We simply dont have the freezer space to buy them in bulk either, what with the outdoor freezer being full of rabbits and chicks and whatever else we kill! I already have two cages (actually large fishtanks on a stand) taking up room in my shed. And I was readi

Regarding the pet shop thing... I have no quarrels buying from a pet shop. I probably will end up doing so if no-one else has any. The reasons I would rather buy off someone else are because: a) I know how hard it can be sometimes to offload animals you have bred. I have bred hamsters and rats before (when I was around 10-13 yrs old) to sell to the petshop, but if someone else has just sold them a load you cant always sell them, or you have to accept less money. So I just thought it might help someone out a bit. And B ) because they might be cheaper than pets at home etc and I would be g

Its a bit of a long shot and not really hunting related but does anyone in the Dumfries and Galloway region have any young rats for sale? Would rather buy off someone face to face than a pet shop. (Ill come clean as well in case it puts anyone off selling them but I am planning to breed these rats as a supplementary food source for our ferrets and falcons. Therefore colour is unimportant.) Please PM me if you can help me out.

Well done tote they are beauties! Do you fish on the burgh permit or on the association stretch?

I know what you mean mate. I ferret a golf course and do a bit of air rifle shooting there. To cut a very long story short I was having a mooch out with the air rifle about 6 weeks ago, when I see this movement further up the hill. When I get closer I see its 2 guys fully camoed up crawling around trying to stalk some rabbits. So what was I meant to do. At first I was raging before I spoke to them, thought there was gonna be trouble because there was total tension in the air we were just staring at each other. So I say to them "I didnt realise anyone else came shooting here", "They don

Ferts need some guidance on how to work a warren.
gibby replied to Madcowz's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
Your ferrets do go underground. And they have bolted bunnies. Thats half the battle won mate If your ferrets are going down one hole and coming out of another, that means that they are doing there job. It just doesnt necessarily mean they are very good at it yet. Start them off in as small a warren as you can. I usually start mine off in anything up to about an 8 holer. This usually means that its not too much of a labrynth down there for the ferrets to find the rabbits. Remember, the rabbits dont want to bolt unless they have to. Sometimes they will go to a deeper level of the wa -
Good pics mate looks like you had a good time. Its feckin pissin down here I was gonna go out today but the wind has put me off the most! And also your a lucky guy 2 rabbits lasting you a whole week, I think Ive got too many ferts 1 rabbit lasts 1 day here!
