Good advice from micky regarding trying it on dead rabbits first. It shouldnt take many attempts at breaking their necks to be confident at doing it. Real quick and humane when you know how
  2. Cant say about the smell as Ive never had a hob castrated but if you clean them out they dont smell bad anyway. Unless Im immune to it but I can hardly smell them at all! Personally I dont think a hobs any more likely to lay up, as I said above, but everyone has a different opinion on the matter . There would be no reason why if you got both you couldnt work them both together. In fact its a good combination in my opinion!
  3. When I had only one ferret I started with a hob, and if I was ever in the situation where I could only keep one ferret it would be a hob. However if I was to only keep two it would be a combination of a hob and a jill, thats what I had all last season and they served me well. Gunna have a few more ferrets this coming season though. A jill will need to either be neutered or brought out of season at least once every year by either mating/ pairing with a vasectomied hob/ jill jab, whereas a hob can remain entire if he is living on his own so one less thing to worry about. When it comes to
  4. Well authorised won easily, the big gamble was right! The bookies wont be chuffed! Me neither though as I was on Aqaleem which came 3rd, and being the idiot I am I never backed it each way Ah well thats how it goes, well done to anyone on authorised, what a horse!
  5. Ive fed them rabbit thats been frozen for weeks, or still warm from being caught/shot, doesnt make any difference. If you get ticks etc deal with them but Ive only had to deal with one tick and that wasnt from what I fed, it was from a days working the burrows . I always paunch them though but feed the livers kidneys heart etc as ditch says. Ive fed a couple of 2 weeks old or so rabbits without gutting them at all but usually I get rid of the stomach. Your ferrets will love you for feeding them rabbit mate! Gibby
  6. Fine looking ferret and dog mate! Congrats
  7. Mate f**k all she can do. The fact that her dog came onto your property is the crux of it. Your dog was just defending itself and its territory. My uncles (now dead ) bull mastiff ripped a dog to shreds that ran into hos garden and picked a fight with it, in full view of both owners who tried to break them up (and guess who was also there visiting  ). My uncles dog was not a violent dog either, wouldnt have went for the other dog unprovoked. Anyway the guy tried to hit my uncle with a 300 pound vet bill, to which my uncle (who felt really bad about the whole thing and kinda t
  8. You should have washed them before you gave them to her
  9. Cracking pics mate, and the kits are coming along nicely
  10. Cracking pics mate, great looking kits! Love the one on the right in the 3rd & 4th pics down Hope they do well for you mate! Cheers, Gibby
  11. I shot a black one once with a really nice coat it was kinda dark grey underneath. Wish Id took a photo or kept the fur, but I was more interested in feeding my ferrets with it at the time! And there was one on a bit of my permission during the winter that proved impossible to catch, could never pinpoint whereabouts it was to ferret it and only saw it when I had no ferrets or air rifle! I see quite a few black ones elsewhere in this region too.
  12. Id say at this time of year hope they aint scared of digging!
  13. No "supplements" will be as good as a diet based on raw fresh meat, period. And I know james wellbeloved is one of the better ferret foods available but I still wouldnt feed any dry food personally, especially while my jill was nursing. Get some raw chicken wings and put say 3 in and check the next morning to see how much is left and go from there. Basically allow her to eat as much as she likes as she has herself and her kits to nourish. Remove any thats left (if any) the next day and feed fresh stuff the next night. Perhaps think of some whiskas cat milk as this may help her bulk u
  14. Short answer, yes. Give them as natural a cut of chicken as possible, i.e. with the bones in and skin on. Chicken wings or legs would probably be best. Long answer: I have been giving my ferrets raw chicken wings/drumsticks (as well as a couple day old chicks) for the past week having run out of rabbit. I have dry food for emergencies but have only fed it once, months ago, and decided that I would rather go to tescos and buy a couple trays of chicken than feed dry food to my jill who has just had kits. They seem to love chicken. But Im hopefully going out shooting tonight if its dry (

    Kits

Thought Id share this picture of some of my 8 day old kits. Some of them were slightly out of the picture because they seemed to be trying to leave the nest already...! There should be 9 in all I think. Also does anyone know when I can pick them up to sex them etc? Its my jills first litter but shes still got her great temperement hasnt got nippy towards me or anything if that makes any difference. Only thing is whenever Ive looked at them Ive put her in her box so she cant see me just in case. Also is it harder to sex them when they are this small!? I was thinking maybe leave it to
  17. Kingholm Quay way mate, near enough Dumfries itself
  18. You both have PM :thumbs-up: Gibby
  19. Cheers guys, I had kinda expected a litter of albinos and it would seem thats what Ive got Had another look at the last night, think there's 9 of the wee blighters! Ill be keeping 1 or 2 jills (if there are any jills - havent sexed them yet) but the rest will be free to good working homes. If your interested let me know, they will be ready about mid July all going well Ill put up a "proper" advert in the classifieds nearer the time too. Oh and I live in the Dumfries area. Thanks again, Gibby
  20. My albino jill has just had a litter a week ago to my albino hob. Both parents are great workers and I am keeping back a couple of kitts regardless of colour but does anyone have any idea what there likely to be? The jills parents were both polecat coloured and so were both the hobs parents. Does this mean Ive got a chance of a few poleys in the litter or are they more than likely all albino? Like I say i wont be disappointed either way but maybe a bit of variety wouldnt go amiss! Cheers Gibby
  21. My jill had her first litter last night (14th may)! :thumbs-up: Cant count them though as the way shes fashioned her nest I would have to lift a "lid" to have a look at them and dont want to spook the jill into eating them by interfering. Plenty of squeeks coming from the nest though, especially when the jills away so im assuming (hoping) they're all healthy! And the jill seems her usual self, not nippy or eratic or anything and still craves attention when I open the hutch. Incidentally does anyone have any idea when its ok to pry about the nest for a head count? Cheers
  22. Had a really young one last saturday. Must have been just a month old or so old. Also caught a rabbit with no tail on the same day, fert might have had something to do with that one tho
  23. That Old Fart is the funniest! Intelligent!? LOL! :11: :11: Seriously though, these people know bugger all about the countryside or how it is run and think it is there for them to go and wander through fields and look at bunnies. They do not seem to realise that it is there for the people that live to make/earn a living. Complaining about 4x4s in the countryside was the start of that debate for petes sakes....!
