  1. I went to the Autumn Game Fair ay Ardingly yesterday. Is it me or are all Game Fairs just turning into posh car boot sales? I was really disappointed - no ferrets, no lurchers. Lots of cheap tat for sale and not a lot else. At least it ONLY cost £9 to get in. The game fair at the Bath & West was awful - lots of guys in camo parading mastiffs and cookware for sale. I didn't go to the CLA game fair 'coz it cost at least £25 to get in. Is it me? Maybe I'm just a grumpy sh*t??
  2. What about a cheeteh? They really fast and spotty!!!!
  3. The attitude of some people on here amazes me. Too macho. Too much aggression. No respect for wildlife, the countryside, other peoples' opinions. The list goes on. If I wanted to get all hunting banned, I would come on here, copy a few messages / threads and publish them in a newspaper. The public would be outraged. I think we ALL need to bear this in mind when we write something on here. Who's watching and could what we say and the way we act damage our future hunting.

  5. I've had two Hancock puppies; 1 out of Enoch (Richard Jones) and 1 out of Hector (unworked Beardie), both great dogs. Lance looks a quality (well built) collie, but if in doubt call David. He'll answer all your questions and won't lie. And he'll be able to tell you what the half crosses come out like. I'll probably get another pup from him next year.
  6. Hello. Thumbing my copy of Lambourn, I noticed the above named characters and was wondering if they're still breeding lurchers or if anyone knows what happened to them (if anything)? Thanks
  7. My dog got attacked by 4 Rottweiler crosses, was pushed into a river and I had to jump in to pull him out. All the while the owner stood there and did nothing - seemed stunned. Then as I walked away, he had the audacity to blame my dog 'coz he was off the lead. I did report him to the Police, who located him through a local vet. His dogs had previously done the same to other dogs. I didn't get any joy. What I didn't understand is that if he loved his dogs like I love mine, I would muzzle them so at least they couldn't do the any / as much damage, but as other people have mentioned here - the

  9. Lovely puppy and yes I'm jealous too. I lost my old Hancock dog (Moses, out of Enoch) last year and have been thinking about a new dog for sometime. Good luck. And do you know what's really nice about this thread, no idiot has written anything nasty about you, your new pup or David Hancock. Amazing!!!
  10. I'm so sorry. My thought are with you.
  11. Could it be that once upon a time to own a poor performing dog wasn't financially viable? Maybe in the past the point of owning a lurcher was to provide food for the table? Nowdays, whilst many dogs do provide food for their owners, do many people rely on it to survive? In this day and age, should anyone buy any dog unless you can care for it throughout it's life? I think not.....
  12. I own a beardie x greyhound bitch. Superb. Indestructible feet, super-tough skin, great coat, fast and intelligent. Can't fault her.
  13. better ones i found stewie Boar baiting? WTF? I thought this was a hunting forum? are you for real that aint baiting thats hunting they have to find an animal first I'd say that's unnecessary suffering, but what do I know? Back to the thread.
  14. Don't admit to anything. He has to prove your negligence caused the injury. If he was intoxicated, it may be in your favour. If he wants compensation, tell him to put it in writing to your insurance company. Your household insurance should cover it unless your dog is mentioned in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

  16. He had an opinion and he voiced it. Some of the stuff he said was wrong, some of it rings true. What I don't understand is peoples over-reaction to him. Maybe they have "issues"?
  17. It seems that to mention Brian Plummer on this forum is a sure-fire way to bring out the worst in people. I enjoy his books and have most of them, but I know some of the stories were exaggerated. Why even the same story appeared in different books occassionally. I DO find it offensive that people who never met or new him feel entitled to insult him, especially when they are so young and have so little exeperience of the world, but then again he did rather court controversy and maybe he even enjoyed it. I went to his place a few times in the late mid'90s and I found him a very enga
  18. I think Plummer said it best ( and I'm para-phrasing him ) - an intentional cross between a sight hound and another breed of dog, to produce a pot-filling hunting dog. Not a hare-courser, although they might. Not a fox killer coz' I don't eat fox.(But they might be called to do so on occasion) An all-rounder who will work with ferrets, lamp, work gorse like a spaniel, course the odd hare (but with cunning) and take a pheasant on the rise. Plus a good mate!
  19. Firstly, I do not want this topic to degenerate into a slagging off session. Does anyone out there own any of Jeff's dogs and are they as good as he reckons? Any comments (other than personal attacks on the bloke) would be welcome. Thanks
  20. I've just lost my dog (Moses) of nearly 14 years. Other than my family, he was my longest relationship! We went through good times and bad, but he was always there - happy to see me, always patient and not complaining of my failures. It's clear to me that regardless of the reason I originally got him, he wormed his way into my heart in a way that few other people have. He was a true friend and I'm a soppy sod.
  21. Thanks to all of you for your messages. It somehow makes it easier.
  22. Yes, well spotted. Died yesterday at the vet - chest cancer. He was so fit otherwise. Has damn near broken my heart.
  23. On your grave beneath the chesnut bough Today no fragrance falls nor summer air, Only a master's love who laid you there Perchance may warm the air 'neath which you drowse In dreams from which no meal-time calls may rouse, Unwakeable, though close the rat may dare, Deaf, though the rabbit thump in playful scare Silent, though twenty foxes screech their vows. And yet mayhap, some night when shadows pass, And from the fir the brown owl hoots on high, That should one whistle 'neath a favouring star Your shade shall canter o'er the grass, Questing for him you loved in days gone by
