Early season, shirt, jumper, waistcoat That will be plenty. Lightweight waterproof pack away. If it’s driven pheasants probably the worst you will deal with is standing Maize. Dogs are for heavy cover ? Imho a decent beanie hat will keep you as warm as a coat

I have the ridge line smock and it’s it’s a great bit of kit, however you can sweat like Jimmy Saville on a school bus in it. Great for the quad, great for sitting out in a hide or goose shooting that type of thing but too warm for walking in all but the coldest weather. Layers is the key for beating imho, a jumper and a shirt will normally suffice on all but the coldest days. Then a light-ish jacket that can be easily taken off and carried is the best bet. jmho

Lots of dogs only need a flash of eyes and they will run it, then you just see what happens.

Sorry but I don’t really get what point you are trying to make ? Yes I do, maybe it 400 or something?…..I’m sure the bloke didn’t have a range finder ?, maybe he walked it after ? Point is, because you have never seen it done don’t mean it can’t be done. As C Green said earlier, get out and about right round the country on all types of terrain with blokes who ain’t clowns and you will learn something new every day……most of all you will learn that anything is possible with the right dog in the right hands.

And ?……depends what at bloke wants to do with a dog either long term or on the day. Sometimes you want to just kill some gear and sometimes you want to see how far you can push something……top class dogs can’t be knocked, they are so rare (imho) that it’s just foolish to try and knock them when you see them. Thats why I questioned when you laughed at McHulls comment about 500 yd slip……I have seen an exceptional dog slipped on a fox that was bobbing along the edge of some forestry, on the lamp at around 300 yds and it killed it. Used to do that regular on all sorts of things.

Yeah, it’s pretty mouthwatering ground. I was never massively into Hares and wouldn’t have taken much interest in coursing. I just wanted to have a dog to f**k about with and to be fair although I had 2 I liked and got on with I never had anything I’d call “good”…….I have been lucky enough to see good dogs and they ain’t two a penny. I wasn’t a good enough owner either to get the very best out of a dog, some lads are just natural round dogs and will get much more out of a dog than another bloke not as good. Was your ever out at 6 mile Bottom mate ? A pal of mine used to be a member of a coursing club and they would run up there on occasion, said one of the well known coursing lads would wait until the hare was a spec in the distance before slipping……said it was a brilliant thing to witness.

I genuinely can’t deal with people that cut about with dogs like that, they inevitably tend to be the “my hands are registered as deadly weapons” types and they just mentally destroy me ! Lol
