  1. I hate to see decent terrier lads at loggerheads over something which isn't really their making, especially with all the REAL enemies we have out there. But unfortunately the lunatics have been in charge of the asylum for the past 13 years and we're all feeling the end result of that in many, many ways and it's no wonder people feel up tight. But please don't anyone underestimate the severity of the penalties which can and are likely to be handed out under this Act. The worst to date, of which I'm aware, is the woman who docked 8 puppies herself and for that received a 2 month jail sentenc
  2. That's also covered on the NWTF website under Tail Docking Info. I hope it helps clarify things. Kindest Regards - Barrie
  3. There seems to be a fair bit of confusion in this thread about what the requirements of the Act are or aren't, what restrictions do apply and how to fully comply with the Act without excluding any terriers regardless of when they were docked. Farlap IS CORRECT and the restrictions only apply to "shows where the public are admitted upon payment of a fee". So if entrance to the show ground itself is free then the restrictions DO NOT APPLY and it is also perfectly legal to charge an entry for each class. The approach which a number of clubs have taken and which appears to work well, both
  4. Hi Tom Thanks for those kind words. Personally I hate the fact that we lost this particular battle in Scotland more than anyone else will even begin to understand. One of the many things I learned in Scotland while fighting the Watson Bill was just how passionate everyone up there was and still are about defending their rights and their sport. For me, it was a privilege to work alongside such people, where whole families were prepared to get off their backsides and do everything possible to defeat the hunting ban, instead of just sitting there and spouting hot air. It’s a pity it’s
  5. Could I say at the outset that Im not having a pop at any particular person with my comments. But this thread (along with a couple of others) offers an opportunity to get something off my chest, whilst hopefully also contributing something towards the discussions. This thread just happens to be the most current and therefore seemed the most appropriate. First of all its a simple fact of life that not everyone gets everything right all of the time…. and that includes me too (at least thats according to the wife, and considering she sends me out with a full belly and a clean set of underwe
  6. This year due to the 2010 CLA Game Fair being held at Ragley Hall and the amount of time during which the CLA requires access to the ground both before and after the show, there will be no other game fairs held at Ragley Hall during 2010. As a result, this year's National Working Terrier Federation Champion of Champions and Open Terrier Show will be held at the well established Shropshire Game Fair, Chetwynd Park, Newport, Near Telford, Shropshire on Sunday 22nd August 2010. It's the normal Ragley Show weekend date, the same Game Fair organisers, the same terrier show team and the sam
  7. It's not so much cancelled as "relocated" for a year. This is due to the 2010 CLA Game Fair being held at Ragley Hall and the amount of time during which the CLA requires access to the ground both before and after the show. This means there will be no other game fairs held there during 2010. As a result, this year's National Working Terrier Federation Champion of Champions and Open Terrier Show will be held at the well established Shropshire Game Fair, Chetwynd Park, Newport, Near Telford, Shropshire on Sunday 22nd August 2010. 8. And they say that we're cruel (click) !!!! As an aside, in their "Useful Information" section (about 2/3 of the way down the page on the right hand side) this site also provides a number of useful links to other sites which detail what the RSPCA's powers actually are.... as opposed to what they would have us believe. 9. Isn't the tail so you can pull them by it too, if stuck? No its bloody not! Any more than YOUR ear isnt a handle for dragging you about! A working terrier's tail is and always has been docked, the reason being to prevent tail damage injuries and the likelihood of far more serious injuries/surgery in later life. For a more detailed description see here. References to a "hand hold" relate more to the length of the dock than its purpose. Y.I.S. - Barrie
  10. No arguement there but lets be VERY CLEAR. This is really ALL to do with FOX hunting as we know, but obviuosly there is a chance of flushing rabbit or squirrel...or Badger....careful, etc!!! Written permission is ONLY required if you intend to actively hunt these quarry with your dog! It is NOT required if you take your dog out to push the pheasant/pigeon etc up! And for EVERYONE else written permission is NOT a legal requirement, even if you take your dog with you, but no arguement that it is much better to have it in writing anyway if you can! Not a required at all for
  11. The detailed requirements of the Act and those permission letters in a more convenient post card format can be found and downloaded here PERMISSION POST CARDS. Y.I.S. - Barrie
  12. there is the rother valley working terrier club . You'll find the a list of Fell and Moorland areas and Area Reps on their website here and also a list of N.W.T.F. Member Clubs and various contacts (including the FMWTC) on the NWTF website here. Y.I.S. - Barrie
  13. That's very sound advice from Dillan, the only thing I'd add is that the eventual owners of the pups will also need to get them microchipped by a vet before they are 3 months old and the vet will need to enter the chip number on the docking certificate. For full details click on this link tail docking. Y.I.S. - Barrie
  14. Hi Dicky During most of the early years that I knew Bert, along with his terriers he also kept a few hounds. He regularly used them to drive foxes for local gamekeepers and did a pretty fair job of hunting them too. So although he wasn't a shooting man himself, I'd hardly say he was anti shooting, just that his affinity was much closer to terriers and hounds. Nevertheless, it's a simple example which serves to reinforce my earlier comments about the sort of myths which do spring up and which then risk getting repeated as if they were fact. Y.I.S. - Barrie
  15. I’d much rather say they were mistaken. When you get a man of Bert’s stature, a man who absolutely lived for his hunting more than anything else in the world and far beyond any material possessions. And who without doubt and quite rightly became something of a legend, it’s inevitable there will be a fair share of myths crop up too. Nevertheless if we are to respect someone’s memory properly, then it’s important to keep the records straight. I’d much rather the man be remembered and spoken about for the things he did, rather than something he didn’t and that’s the sole purpose of my posts.
  16. I've no wish to disappoint anyone, or to offend. But Chalkywarren and others are 100% correct in their assertations that Bert never did get around to writing a book (beyond the hand written manuscript referred to elsewhere in this thread) and like others I wish that wasn’t the case. But it’s a sad fact of life that Bert never did write a book, and that in some cases lesser men have, and will be remembered for having done so. However it says much about the man and what he was, that he is still remembered and respected today for what he did, rather than for what he wrote and no one can ever
  17. WISE WORDS AND DEFINITELY NOT TO BE IGNORED... With respect and without wishing to dampen anyone's enthusiasm, which is very much to their credit. But if there is a genuine desire amongst posters on this thread (and elsewhere) to achieve something positive for terrierwork along with the rest of fieldsports, then offering just a few hours of their time to assist Vote-OK would be by far the most productive thing they could do. In reality it would cost far less in terms of time or money than attending any march(s) in our capital cities and more importantly IT WILL HAVE A LONG TERM LASTING EF

  19. ....and the antis name was Graham Hall, if my memory serves me right at that time he lived in the Bromsgrove area.
  20. Class... it sounds to me as if both you and the bitch were equally fortunate
  21. Sorry.... I've been out of the country, got back this evening and only just picked up on the thread again. The CLA Game Fair date (1976) and location (Glanusk Park) were definitely correct. I'd got it in my head that it was also some special occasion for Prince Charles and had mistakenly assumed it was his investiture (too much acid in the 60's ???). Maybe it was simply the fact he was Prince of Wales and the Game Fair was held in Wales, but thank you for putting the record straight . A couple of other things I remember about the occasion was a very young David Jones with the David
  22. lol.. Ill second that ..Although Barrie is a very busy man.Like to hear a few tales Barrie from the old times mate To be truthful I'd be scared to.... But sometimes when we do have a few of the "old crowd" around and get reminiscing Chris'll say "Listen to you buggers, you sound just like Old Bert".... and for those that new him well there'd be an added "Actually" . So probably not a good idea and best left to those who enjoy seeing their name up in lights I guess we were lucky in as much as we hunted with the B.C.O.H. which was a melting pot of some of the finest sporting
  23. Selwyn your memory is spot on . I was close friends with Bert from the early 70's up until his death and particularly during the time he was terrierman to the Border Counties Otterhounds (BCOH) under the Mastership of Mr R.P. Williams who also hunted the hounds. Bert was terrierman to the BCOH up until 1977 when the otter was placed on the protected list. The BCOH retained all their original hounds, but then reformed as the Border Counties Minkhounds under the Mastership of their new Huntsman John Newton. Bert's hearing had started to fail by then, terrier locators were still a rela
  24. The "Code of Good Practice" associated with the Governmemt's "Code of Conduct for Terrierwork" clearly states that... - A rifle should not be used to shoot a running fox. Always use an appropriate shotgun and ammunition (see below). A fox bolted in open country may stop and look back after running a short distance. It may be prudent to have a centre-fire rifle available for this eventuality but always ensure that the shot is safe. Air rifles are unsuitable for fox control and .22 rim fire rifles should only be used at short ranges up to 30 metres. - Results from research show that
  25. The CORRECT answer is.... YES.... it's legal to bolt a fox into a net. NO.... it's NOT legal to "crack em on the head". This Hunting Act 2004 (schedule 1 paragraph 2) permits the use of a single dog below ground to flush out wild mammals solely for the purpose of preventing or reducing serious damage to game birds or wild birds being kept or preserved to be shot. The person must carry with them written permission and intend to shoot the wild mammal as soon as possible after it is flushed. See here for more detailed requirements under the Act.... (NWTF Hunting Act). Kindest
