  1. No offence Lilpip but the situation is far more complex than that and the bit about "breaking through" isn't correct. The only time you can dig down is if you consider your dog to be trapped (see below). This is the summarised position for both England/Wales (the same Act) and in Scotland (a different Act). ENGLAND & WALES: The Hunting Act (2004) regulates terrier work In England and Wales. Summary: This Act (schedule 1 paragraph 2) permits the use of a single dog below ground to flush out wild mammals solely for the purpose of preventing or reducing serious damage to game
  2. The info does not apply in Scotland check Ptotection of Wild Mammals Scotland act on Scottish govt website or pm me yis what is the law north of the border then Hopefully this link summarises the legislation and explains it in reasonable language. It also includes links to the relevant Acts, but that's pretty hard going . Terrierwork in England, Wales & Scotland.
  3. Bryan Many thanks for that post, which also provides a valuable insight into the way the Irish Hound Associations have already prepared themselves for whatever may lie ahead. I.M.H.O. it would be short sighted of those terriermen outside of hunts not to prepare themselves in a similar manner, rather than risk being left out in the cold. By way of example (and I'm not suggesting one size fits all), but this code was our saving grace in England, Scotland and Wales. It also served to ensure that our own people were fully aware of their legal rights and wrongs when faced with difficu
  4. Hi Bryan Thanks for the response and that's really good news.... would you have any idea where a copy of the Code might be available ? Please feel free to PM if neccessary. Y.I.S. - Barrie
  5. My advice for what it's worth.... I notice from their website that the Hunting Association of Ireland, unlike it's mainland counterpart (the Council of Hunting Associations) does not, nor has it, any representation from the terrier/lurcher world. It simply represents "hound sports". That's not the H.A.I.'s fault. If the terrier/lurcher world aren't prepared to organise themselves and at least set up some sort of infrastructure to represent their activities, then they can't in all fairness expect someone else to do it for them. There is also the added risk (and I've seen and exper

  7. Yes.... I know Phil very well. I got him is first terrier at his late father's request when he was a teenager about 16 years of age. She was a black bitch called Jossie and full sister to the left hand black bitch in the first picture. Subsequent to that I also got him a Russell dog called Skip from David Jones at the DDH kennels. He helped me for many years with the terriers at the BCMH both as boy and man, I guess the only time we were ever apart was during his military time when he was off chasing "bogey men" and living under bushes. When I retired he carried on with it for several yea
  8. Hi Busterdog At that time (15 years ago) I was doing the terrierwork for a pack of hounds in the Shropshire area, I did so for 17 seasons and finished about 10 years back. Each year we'd hold a fund raising dinner with a bring and buy auction and I'd always throw in a couple of sets of those couplings. They were very popular and raised good money even in those days. In the main the coupling sections were leather, rather than the metal links as in SS's version. Some had the dog clips attached to the leather by being rivetted on, and on the "posh version" the dog clips strapped on a
  9. Hi Aaron Thanks for that and it's a very kind thought, but I suspect you give me far more credit than I'm due, I'm sure there were others using something of a similar design way before me. In those days we didn't have people like yourself willing to provide good quality tailor made goods at an affordable price. We were stuck with 2 options when looking for couplings. Either visit a saddler (beyond my pocket) or use (as we did) those old ex army leather straps which I believe were used to fasten up stretchers in the military ambulances. They were durable enough, but as others can I'm su
  10. SS.... I've been using an identical design for 30+ years, the only other person I knew that used anything similar was Colin Roscoe who I met some 25 years back and who in those days was Secretary of the Rother Valley WTC. The potential disadvantages have already been covered, namely the possibility of losing a collar and the fact that those unfamiliar with the design can be prone to "unbuckling" rather than "unclipping". I've made several sets as gifts over the years and have only known one person to lose a collar, but I would always carry a spare in my net bag anyway. The real secret
  11. He certainly looks the part, what breedings behind him. LL. Out of a Dog called Fudge and a Bitch named Biscuit :-Both Stobbard bred. Muddy. Just out of interest.... Tupac also won the 2008 Open Show where he would have been in competition against most of the Championship qualifiers for that year too, but under a different set of judges. It's nice to see such consistency .
  12. Barrie, no offence taken! but you should have read my request correctly, I only asked for names of the winning '' DOGS'' and not of any persons names, owners or otherwise!. However I do understand your caution in such matters as a person who has keep, worked and showed lurchers and terriers over 50 years. Muddy. Thanks Muddy and my apologies . My few remaining grey cells were still moving a bit slow after Sunday, you're a star
  13. And also a young MAN of impeccable manners.... a credit to both you and to himself
  14. Just an observation, but from someone who’s been at the front line longer than he’d choose…. if people were as willing and put as much effort into promoting terrier work and attacking its opponents instead of each other, then there’d be a lot less work for others to do. JMHO. Gonetoearth, DonnyC (you ‘auld bugger) & Terrier2…. thanks for your kind words . It was fun (as all terrier shows SHOULD be), albeit a bit hectic on the day. But the real credit must go to all those who turned up to support the show, without them it would have been a failure . Muddyboots… no
  15. First of all, a very BIG thank you to everyone who supported the show. The weather was kind to us, albeit a bit sticky and the turnout nothing less than spectacular. To the extent that the Open Show, plus the Championship prejudging overlapped with our allocated Main Arena slot for the Champion of Champions Class and this had moved to a later time. There were 63 finalists in the Championship class, definitely one of our best ever entries and when the final 8 were lined up it was in my opinion the best that I'd ever seen at Ragley, or indeed anywhere else. The Field magazine where t
  16. The local forecast on each of the 3 websites I use is giving us 3 out of 3 for some great weather on Sunday . The Field magazine have also been in touch to say they'd like to cover the show and to do some interviews. So hopefully the good weather will enable them to get some great pictures of some very nice terriers looking their best. For those who are coming to the show, have a safe journey and please do come up to the Federation stand and make yourself known (I'll be the ugly bugger on the microphone). I'll try and get some pictures of the winners posted once we're home (assu
  17. p***y, thanks for your support, we look forward to seeing you. Please be sure to come up and say "Hello", it's always nice to be able to put faces to names .
  18. Terrier.2.... Thanks for that kind comment. But a show's only as good as the people who attend and we've always been very fortunate in the support we've received over the years. That, along with the facilities provided by the Game Fair organisers, enables us to promote the working terrier and terrierwork to the general public in a way we can all enjoy . Keano.... It will be great to see you again. Have a safe journey and we look forward to seeing you on Sunday .
  19. Thanks Del . We do our best to accommodate everyone, as do the Game Fair Organisers. People have often complained about us terrier/lurcher people being treated as the poor relatives at various Game Fairs etc where they’re hidden away and provided with inadequate facilities. That’s never the case at Ragley!!! The Game Fair organisers are just as enthusiastic about terrierwork and working terriers as we are. They do everything possible to promote the working terrier, along with the terrier show itself. The Open Show is held in a prime and well sign posted location with plenty of ri
  20. It is indeed Awen.... it's the Bank Holiday Monday and a first class show
  21. Hi Andrew There's the Shropshire Game Fair, once again a long haul for you, but you'll find the details at Shropshire Game Fair. There's also a list of terrier/lurcher shows on the National Working Terrier Federation's website at NWTF Show List. The Long Itchington Show on 31st is really well organised, has great prizes and is well worth considering. Hope this helps - Barrie

  23. Yes.... there's a load of them at JRTCGB National Show Pictures. PS. I never did get that autograph
  24. The Animal Welfare Act 2006 requires that each legally docked dog (ie. docked on or after 28th March 2007 in Wales and 6th April 2007 in England) must before they are 3 months old be identified by a microchip inserted by a vet and the registration number recorded on the vets docking certificate issued at the time of docking. The whole issue of microchipping relates to identifying those dogs which have been legally docked and those which have not. For more detailed information see..... Tail Docking Info Hope this helps clarify matters.
