  1. A whopper compared to my little bitch... The whippet sire would have been the smaller dog then.
  2. the reason i put the whippet dog over the bitch was that i thought id get some racy pups which i did (3) one for myself a nice 18" black and white bitch a brindle who went down to a hunt in conway and a black that went up to the n.east, the rest were like [bANNED TEXT] normal bullx, as far as i can remember there was only 1 that came really bull type, i could have used my bull dog over the bitch but they would have came too strong. How big was the bull bitch Bullyson? Didn't realise you'd done it that way around too
  3. Couldn't tell you mate. I spoke to a lot of people about using a bigger dog over a smaller bitch and I met with a range of opinions from "don't do it" to "it doesn't make any difference" The consensus of opinion from the people who I respected was along the lines of do it...but the litter/pups might be small in line with the bitch.
  4. It's usually the other way around mate....small dog to larger bitch ie. Bedlington dog x grey bitch etc. I only tried it this way as I had a little bitch worth breeding off in my opinion.
  5. My cross didn't happen mate. Tried three times but the sire was a jaffa We had all sorts of bother with the bull bitch too as she wasn't too friendly to the dog. Tried with another good dog too, but she wasn't having it. She'd let my old neutered bull terrier hump her all day long, but when it came to standing for something else, it got a little emotional at times. I guess she just didn't like being unfaithful I was doing it the wrong way around if you know what I mean....bull bitch to whippet dog. I was expecting a few odd looking buggers in the litter. Yours looks to have come out n
  6. As in non-pedigree stuff.....ie a little bit (or more!) of grey. I was trying a similar cross myself a few years back and I was using a hardblood whippet, which was actually 7/8 grey
  7. Aye Taffy...she was shaping up alright. She was a joy to own and work. Phenomenal drive once she turned on and a real "person" dog...lovely temperament.
  8. Very nice....did you use hard blood whippet?
  9. Been longnetting with a pure beardie...excellent fun!
  10. Meg was a first cross.....terrible jacket, like a bedlington cross http://thehuntinglife.com/html/sections/ar...ute-to-meg.html
  11. Edited: What bit of that do you lot not understand?
  12. Due to the recent excellent threads on here of late from our cousins on the other side of the pond, I was just wondering what is the most common terrier in the field over there? I've read Greg D's superb articles for years in EDRD and I know he uses DJT's/Fell and the crosses and I know Paddy B likes his russells, but what do the other guys use? I know a lot of black gear went your way so is this common for work like over here? I stayed in Nevada with some pals and the lady of the house had a fair few smart digging russells but the man of the house brought a red lakey with him and that seemed
  13. When you ferret the dales, the weather is often dirty it's usually blowing pretty bad.....
  14. No Frank, they're are all staff or english crosses mate.
  15. Have you guys never bred dogs that could find and catch? Just curious as that's what seems to me to be the answer. I suppose it's a fine line between casting them out and them ranging a bit too far. I remember a conversation I had with Ian Colley about the hound blood he had used before and he found that he had to dilute it quite a bit before he had a dog that would find off a ute but not range too far. I suppose if you've got space for a few dogs then it's not a problem having different breeds for different jobs.
  16. There's a lot of lads feel that way I have hunted with in Oz mate. You don't want a dog to "fight" a pig. It's a lot easier if they lie up alongside and hold while you stick it. A fighter will get knocked up pretty quick. Mind you, a few lads do use pure dogs. I think a coyote is another matter though
  17. Cheers fella. Thought they were a straight cross. My mistake.
  18. Good going Socks. It's great to see a lurcher being introduced to all sides of the sport. As you know, crows are a bugger for the retrieve. Meg was the only one of mine who would even touch them! Pup seems to be coming on great guns mate
  19. How's the dam bred? Any info on the sire?
  20. I know what you are going through. Chin up
  21. I've seen KC dogs work and work well, but why take the risk? If I wanted an earth dog, I'd be going to see blokes who keep earth dogs. Some people will have breeds that are kc registered and as long as they work and produce well, who cares about the registration? It's only a piece of paper. A dog doesn't know it's KC registered after all. What we should be talking about is dogs that have been bred for work versus dogs that haven't, not whether they are kc registered. There's a lot of dogs that will knack foxes for fun on top, but can they stay to their job when it matters? If they can, the
  22. Excellent do Foxy! Can't ask for more than that.
  23. http://www.amazon.com/Monocled-Mutineer-Wi...n/dp/0704332876 It's a bit pricey!
