Enter reality.... I'm speaking from real life experience in the oil industry and you're speaking from your experience of international politics? Or would that be what you've read on the internet? No shit, you disagree. LOL

So the only point in EU nations having a military at all is to appease the US in NATO? I didn't say NATO would be split, simply that if the EU nations fully or at least significantly integrated then they would not be dependant on NATO for their defence, they could act unilaterally and independently but still be in NATO. They have all of the might needed to do that if they had the will to integrate. Look at the combined assets, manpower and industrial base of EU nations, it's very significant and could very easily replace NATO for their own purposes.
-
The EU's nuclear deterrent essentially comes from French submarines, with air force jets from a few other nations equipped to carry US controlled bombs for battlefield strikes. They have the capability to replace those US warheads with their own in relatively short time. If they were serious about significant military centralisation then I reckon they'd be able to muster a sufficiently credible nuclear deterrent.
-
I don't know if it 'always' will, but certainly currently does, yes. What Europe/EU has in terms of resource and knowledge is sufficient to create an alternative to NATO imo. What they lack is the political will to coordinate it all effectively. That will may never be found but threats like Russia may well force it to be. Certainly having the UK out of the gang makes it easier.
-
Makes you wonder how long it'll be before the EU are making serious moves towards military integration and centralisation. The controversial 'EU Army'.
-
Making big moves already and about time they pulled their heads out of their arses. I'd like to see the UK up the lightning fleet order but the biggest problem we have is lead times on integration of our preferred weapons. Germany to buy F-35 warplanes for nuclear deterrence WWW.DEFENSENEWS.COM The decision comes in the context of Germany’s massive defense strategy adjustment following Russia’s...

Some will sure, but even now I know of talented and experienced oil industry workers, with a lot of career in front of them, leaving off their own backs.
-
Just as an example, the research dept I worked in for most of my career had about 120 years of industry experience in it shared between six members of staff. By the time I was laid off they closed down the dept, keeping only the two most junior staff, transferring them to another dept. Those two lads had a combined 6 years experience. COVID stripped that company, and eventually the industry, of 120 years experience and left it with 6.... That's why the oil price is rising.
-
I don't think this really has much to do with UK government policy or oil companies profiteering. It's true that politicians are using the Ukraine situation as an excuse for rising prices, when in fact it has only really caused a short term spike, but fundamentally this is a result of COVID. I've spent the last 12 years in the oil industry, I survived the 2014 crash, I've seen tons of redundancies since, I even survived the financial turmoil of COVID up until about 10 months ago when I finally got the bullet too. Now I'll be leaving the industry in two weeks but my point is that the indus

That is literally like a rabbit! I’ve had some fair sized ones this last month too.

How f***ing rich are you still buying premium! Exactly what I've just done. Except I want the power!
-
I personally think he's f****d up. Whatever he gains out of this, will lead to net losses imo. If they had gone from victory to victory and shown the world what they were capable of it would be a different story. This will weaken Russia's power and it will embolden, expand, and improve NATO. It may well even lead to the end of the Putin regime.

Tbh mate I can't see Ukraine agreeing to giving up a square inch, even in the face of annihilation. If it goes that way I think it'll essentially be decided by Russia and unofficially accepted by the international community until it is just part of history. The problem I see with just giving up those eastern contested regions is that they do not give Russia the 'buffer' they want between them and NATO. Even if Ukraine agreed to give those up, they would never agree to not entering NATO or at least essentially being massively armed by NATO as a security guarantee against future invasion, a

Ah, fair. I thought I was being innovative! See how long they can hold Kyiv, that'll be a key objective in deciding what is the end game. Either way, whatever is left of Ukrainian sovereignty, if anything, will be armed to f**k by the international community. If it's not a NATO member then it'll be a de facto NATO force.
-
Anyone else potentially see Ukraine being partitioned down the Dnieper river?

You keep sharp fella! You don’t know where the next message will come from…

You'd think this one was about to kill you. Like he's the sort you'd suspect kidnaps prostitutes for fun and then dissects them alive in his underground sound proof laboratory. That sort... He's was a laugh at the xmas party.

I read an opinion piece by some former US defence big wig where he says that the US should give three squadrons of A-10s to Ukraine immediately with trainers as military aid. If that happened that column would disperse like rats! Be absolute carnage. Transfer three A-10 aircraft squadrons to Ukraine now WWW.DEFENSENEWS.COM This aircraft and its gun system were designed to counter an armored assault in Europe. They proved...

He's genuinely the most socially bizarre person you have met. It's just perfect!
-
I think he's stretching the truth a bit saying that experts said that column of armour was harmless. To me it's always been accepted as a bit of an impending threat. I mean, it's not exactly an example of Russian military excellence but equally I don't think many folks thought it wasn't going to become active when they were ready to assault Kyiv.
