  1. just thought id add, compo - i now also have a stafford and use him for everything you've mentioned.. not the typical breed for it but handy nonetheless
  2. This is one for the pointer boys; how useful is it and how often do ou use your pointers for 'pointing' ? reason i ask is that in some ways i can see definite merit in it, especially for the rough shooter, but on a driven shoot its not really needed, hunting boar - Kiwi you could give us some insight.. other than that from everything ive seen of the wirehairs they look very useful.
  3. if the dogs used in the breeding are all good workers then it should be a great dog
  4. most of the deer hunting ive done has been in smallish fields and woodlands, i've found that good feet, strength and stamina are the most important aspects... the best i've seen are collie bred dogs, although im sure there are better than the mongrels ive seen.
  5. i dont really see what the manchester terrier could bring to the mix nowadays. if its what you're after then go for it, id be interested to see how you get on.
  6. Is he from the same lines as your other stuff ant?
  7. They are not old line staffs my friend they are the new line staffs that are at all the shows now. This generation bred that dirt not the boys from twenty and forthy years ago.We also never considered them workers or game dogs from testing them on rabbits. I dont think anyone would suggest a staff is game or a worker from hunting rabbits Liam, but it isnt wise to mention much else on a public forum. I admire the dogs and men of old .. just wish i was around 40 years ago!
  8. useful looking dog ant almost as handy looking as mine
  9. it depends on how you define game. either way, there are some about. im not into dog fighting but from the hunting ive done so far with my young dog i'd call him game. at least - game in training
  10. afan; there are guests viewing this topic, dont shame our forum by posting pictures of fat, lazy, good for nothing pet terriers that disgrace their breed on it
  11. Liam Delaney: I mean the sort whose heads are so big they're almost scraping along the floor, the short squat bodies that are just "too bully" to do any work... the sort that guard my local spar shop.
  12. cheers for your input topper. From my experience of hunting pigs and what ive seen and heard of these dogs, sounds a good idea to me
  13. i couldnt imagine anyone daft enough to import one over there unless its just for the sake of owning one like the vast majority on here do ... why would someone be daft to do that? are you speaking through personal experience? have you ever hunted pig in australia? have you had experience with lyndon's dogs? .. or are you just throwing around your ill informed opinion?
  14. Just wanting to know if there are any ingles bulls or working english bulls in australia ??? Any help would be appreciated
  15. "the only real bull is the pit, all others are just substitutes" ... thats just plain ignorance.
  16. if people would stop using any old useless bull in the mix maybe the result would be different.. but lets not underestimate the fox, he's a wily customer at the best of times. from what ive seen first x bull x's dont perform brilliantly where i come from because the majority of the land i hunt is small fields/farms and wooldlands.
  17. some great looking dogs on here boys. keep the thread going! dodgers mum thats a great picture, any more?!
  18. well said. Lads its up to us to change the stereotype attatched to bull breeds. TRAIN your dogs!
  19. how has your bulldog caught rabbits, foxes and squirrels mate? sounds abit far fetched to me... i can believe it would despatch them all with relative ease, but lets remember that wily charlie often outsmarts even good lurchers... that said, my gundog bitch catches them, but only because she charges through cover harder than them ~ i cant imagine an am bull getting through that quick... you got any pics?
  20. mine's only about 13 months, so hasnt seen much real work either.. we've had a load of sqirrels, rabbits etc and his retrieving is coming on nicely. He's killed a few small vermin and is looking lke an old hand at that, so hopefully by the end of the season he'll see some serious work. Atb
  21. squirrels have a real nasty bite, sharp claws, and fight like no rat i've ever seen.. if i were you mate id wait till your pup's had a few rats and knows how to put a quick end to them before letting him go for an un-shot squirrel
  22. yes how much work have yours seen mate?
