  1. i would go down the route of using a whippet stud mate - by the time you have located suitable litters, gone to see the breeders, sire dam, made sure they are doing the work you require, then raising the pup, kennel space, food, vet bills and as someone just said a few seasons down the line it may still end up sh!te and you are back to square 1. its a lot less hassle finding a stud dog and then taking your bitch to have her lined.
  2. agree with you there mate its a good read - and powells stuff does SEEM to be top notch but i'd not heard of them until i read the book, anyone know much about the dogs harcombe and powell use?
  3. What you say sounds good in theory but the problem comes when you put it in to practice. Are you going to visit the owner of every single working dog to see which one is best? What if a particular dog has an easier day than another dog and so seems to be the better specimen but isnt actually? The reason we have different breeds in the first place is because a type has evolved over many many generations to consistently produce workers...the fact they look the same is because they have been bred in a tight family line, same common ancestors. If you had a good working lakeland bitch, find
  4. The last 3 sentences are the best i have read as a tribute to the work they do - spot on mate
  5. yeah the ears just look small or folded over to me it is illegal in britain though - some of the continental breeds which are imported over to here have the ears cropped the presa canario and cane corso for example. not sure why its done though i have my suspicions best not aired on a public forum...
  6. i'm from sunny sunderland but got some ratting permission in stanley doesnt look like a bad place to live

  11. sounds like you have 2 dogs with two different personalities - the younger one sounding bold and inquisitive - not necessarily going to ground to look for quarry but just being a normal inquisitive pup exploring the environment around him.
  12. cheers lads i will give that a go

  14. ask not what the club can do for you but what you can do for the club if its just starting it will need a lot of hard work and dedication from its members to achieve its aims and objectives good luck with it you guys
  15. Jesus Christ some poor lady has lost her pet cat to a badly set trap and all you can do is jump on the "all cats bad" bandwagon . correct!!! if it wasnt out to roam at will it wouldnt have met a sticky end in the trap
  16. cats shouldnt be let out to wander around anyway - if it was a dog wandering around it would be took away and possibly put down

  20. try using some of the thicker red/pink type stuff you get on fire hoses on walls in hotels/tower blocks etc...you should be able to find a length if you know anyone in the demolition trade or failing that next time you go on a farm have a look about you will almost certainly find some lying around that you can ask the farmer for...
  21. hows yours bred (i.e. its sire and dam?), is it registered with any of the clubs? who bred it? doubt your dog will make much difference (given your location - most people wont travel further than the end of their road for a dog) unless its a world beater at earth work but best of luck anyway
  22. when out walking him pick him up and put him over a fence that you feel he can jump and walk off and leave him he may cry for abit but he will jump it thats how i taught mine and they are jumping well now. once your dog has jumped it once he will jump obsticlles all the time No no no...your dog will get distressed by you walking off and leaving him - may cause himself an injury in his panic to get over to you. Start in the house with a board across the door. Show him his food bowl with his food in it and then put it at the other side of the board so he has to go over the board to ge
