  1. if you've got a variety in your permission which isnt all fields or woods etc...then you can work them through the year on rats, concentrate on the farm buildings though in the summer they tend to move out but will at least keep the dogs ticking over. Chicken farms where they clean the sheds out every 10 months there is no cover inside them so they can keep the dogs busy depending how many sheds there are would give you a couple of weeks of activity. Apart from that i just walk around the farm early mornings and late nights fantastic. Get a chance to relax and observe the wildlife rath
  2. Can anyone shed ay light on what Sallie was saying about the european laws and farmers putting poison down? What exactly does the law state / require farmers to do?
  3. also forgot to say - try and make sure you remove any other food sources near to the trap otherwise they may prefer to eat that than go in to an unfamiliar trap and eat what is in there.
  4. hi nathan, try using something on the trap plate that the rats cant carry away - as someone else has said, nutella, peanut butter, jam something like that - they will have to physically stay on the plate to eat it and will more likely trigger the trap. If you are finding empty traps with the bait gone it is possible that mice are springing your trap but they are small enough to crawl out through the mesh. You wont have to put a load of bait on, a dollop the size of a 50p piece will do - keep it in the centre of the plate so that the rats won't try and get at it from outside the trap otherw
  5. i like to get my pups out as soon as they are jabbed up - they then get used to other dogs, people, livestock, the sound of a smoker etc...There's more to ratting (or any terrier work for that matter) than just taking a pup out when its old enough. They will experience the smells and all that goes with it but by far the most seductive thing to a pup is the sound of rats squeeking when another dog has caught one. They immediately perk up and become interested, ears are up, nose is twitching and they want to be in there. After this has happened a few times you will notice subtle changes in t
  6. dillan is right nice pup all the same best of luck with it
  7. best of luck with the youngen, i've been debating taking on a black dog for ages - maybe one day i'll take the plunge too atb
  8. sorry to hear of your loss j - know how you feel my old feller was 12 and passed a few months ago, you gave him the life every dog should have cant add anything that hasnt already been said raise that glass to old bedlam
  9. the time spent to ground is just as much an indicator of the digger as it is of the dog
  10. haha goldfinch i've been called worse things i suppose fella! obviously my attempt at tongue in cheek humour didnt translate well on the WWW. the way i see it is there is no point arguing with people i have never met before (learned my lesson on that one!) and Deemac that post pretty much sums it up in a nutshell but not every plummer owner is like that and the clubs are trying to get along but its not worth bothering lads on here with talk of plummer politics (there are plenty of other places for that!). Most have already made their minds up one way or the other and aren't going to ch
  11. Ok let me put it another way - do you think i give a sh!t what people think of the terriers i keep? I keep plummers for fuks sake - if i was that bothered what people thought of them i would have given up a long time ago
  12. i dont have to justify the terriers i choose to keep with anyone i dont have anything to prove to anyone therefore i dont have anything to say on threads like this
  13. Born To Dig couldn't have put it better Respect goes a long way in this game.
  14. It was a cracking show, very well organised and well worth the trip across the pond. Will have to organise a later flight next time so i can stay till the end.
  15. also just to add... i think it is unnecessary to give your dogs anti bio's or jabs everytime you take them ratting. they will build up their own immunity soon enough. just clean any wounds with hydrogen peroxide which you can get from any chemist. dont get the 40% stuff though get one of the weak versions 5% or 6% alternatively some people swear by salty water to clean wounds. atb
  16. first thing is jabs for the pup - these should be covered with normal puppy jabs but as has been said check with your vet if unsure. wear gloves when you are ratting as you will come in contact with all sorts of stuff a rat could have crapped or pissed on. i have some of that alcohol type hand gel handy in the car so i can use that before driving home. next thing if the dogs live in the house then you want to have a dog bath outside so you can wash the dogs when you get back from ratting thoroughly. rats dont live in the cleanest of places so your dog is going to get up the eyes in liv
  17. yes they do still get out mate - they do quite a bit throughout the year
  18. alright lads - see yous worked the photo thing out now!!!

  19. are you JP's nephew mate?

  20. is this rags out of quest by rocky? quarter black fell terrier if it is.
  21. If you mean you're wanting to breed to continue the family line you have, and the dogs you have are working well doing what you want them to, then you will want to linebreed to lock in those working qualities (a tried and tested method throughout the working terrier world. If i was you i would track down some relatives of the dog - either grandparents, aunties or uncles and see if they are also working as you would expect your own terriers to do. If they are, then i would do an aunty/nephew mating or uncle/niece mating. I have heard that grand sire put over grand daughters or grandsons put ove
  22. get them straight onto the rats if you have access to them, they are old enough now. if you decide to take them out together make sure they are past the puppyish stage as they will spend all day chasing each other around and not much time watching what is going on. By the age of them they should be past that phase but if you take them out and they do chase each other it may be an idea to alternate them on different days or leave one in the box for a bit and swap them over. Once they get a taste they will focus more and you will be able to put them together again.
  23. those miniature jacks seem to be getting more popular round here - dont for the life of me know why!
