how did you make a living out of your hobby ?
Sterry replied to ferret boy charlie's topic in General Talk
Just a word of warning, turning your hobby into your job dont work, my aunt was an avid falconer and she had a "perfect" job breeding and looking after some lord's birds, she was given a house, 1000s of acres to hunt on, everything she could have wanted (sounds good dont it) but after getting up and have to fly the longwings and the broad wings and everything else caused her to loose all passion for it. And pest control it not like hunting and shooting, my experience of it is standing shin deep in pigeon shit in a dark warehouse shootin feral at some 15yrds, hardly sporting or enjoyable. -
Wax chaps aggain here, but heavy brambles can still shread them but at least it take a few seassons to do so opposed to a few hours (no exaggeration). and what you describe sounds like % of my ferreting soo, you not alone mate.

did anyone else grow up in a anti-hunt house hold?
Sterry replied to JPTfellterrier's topic in Young Hunters Talk
My sister used to be really quite anti but after a good 5 years of bringing in the days bounty she now sort of ignores it. my advice just get on with it...they slowly wear down eventually...just dont leave what you just shot on cream carpet....not good idea -
Well ALMOST EXCLUSISE fox, i'll think i'll make it it exclusively for charlie in that case. The reason i wanted sommit for sub 200yrds is for my experience im fairly new to this game, so dont want nothing too much for the shooter. definatly looks like the .223 is the ticket, cheers.

Its legal to flush any legal quarry to a bird of prey, i use my pointer occaisionally with my uncle and his red tail, make quite a good team
-
is their much in the way of performance between a 22 hornet and .223 under 200 yrds, i was only abit unsure of the .223 being bit too over the top for the range i want it for. and the 22 hornet seems bit better (no mincing) rabbits.

I've heard of the use of european eagle owls and golden eagles, but i want to know how they stop the dog charging in when the birds caught it. i imagine it could get messy.
-
I've been lookin for an almost exclusive fox rifle (not at massive range sub 200 yrds) and although i think i'll be gettin a .223 down to the price and availability of ammo (not want to reload as of yet). i desperatly want to know what the 22 hornet is like. Any veiws?...on paper its a great calibre, but this is a real world unfortunatly.

Depends, as a rule of thumb o/u tend to be bit heavier so its better for clays as your shooting a fair few rounds a day. Side by sides are lighter so easier to walk around with they sit on you arm bit more comfy. but all down to prference mine is side by side but just me

cheers guys. On the rifle front im looking towards a .223, mainly because iheard only good things bout them and the home office suggests a minimum of .222 so hopefully FEO will be happy to grant this. hope you all had a good xmas. Joe.

If that didnt teach you gun safety i dont know what would.

Although im still waitin for my FAC and a suitable calibre for the job, i would like to get into fox shooting. Any advice on approaching land owners, equipment and anything else?
-
Not very exciting but was my first bunny with a rim fires. 80yrds straight betweent the eyes from resting the gun upon the game keepers shoulder. the rabbit back flipped and remember that through the scope... I want my FAC!

The shoot i help run is only a quarter of a mile from a cat protection place and their always seems to be cats trying to get the poults at the time of year,if sheep farmers can shoot domestic dogs for posing a threat to his flock, then am i able to specifically target cats? and are these considered feral or domestic?

i used to know a bloke (no longer with us unfortunatly) who would regulary shoot ducks and geese with a .410 bolt action before the ban on lead. just goes to show what a cracker of a gun they are

I have loads of peices of land all scattered all over the place ranging from small holding (some are pretty big with good backdrops so good for .22lr) right up to 1000s of acres, i seem to have a load of links with land owners that may want an odd job shooting a few bunnies or the odd fox (close range to stop a debate). my uncle and a family friend also are "Light" pest contollers and i get a few days work here and there. By all means i completely understand why im really unlikly to get one (i'll only just be 17 with no FAC holders in the family)in all honestly i dont think i will bwe gran

I know but if you dont ask you dont get so got nothing to loose, but i'll need luck i know. Anyone know about the Met police though????
-
How long does it usually take them to process a FAC grant? i cant remember how long it took for my SCG grant. Any advice would also be handy on what they are like granting people centrefires and open licences on first grant or fairly soon after.

The .410 is a cracker of a gun,(i have 3. why that many i dont know), nice to mooch around with and proberly the only shotgun i would use specially for rabbits and squirrels. i really enjoy using the .410s as well, bit of a trip down memory lane to where i first used a shotgun...still use it today. cartridges can be expensive and tricky to get the ones you want but thats well ou weighed by the actuall gun.

What rectile has it got?

I've worked out both of the two formula using just imagined figures. presuming that: FPS = 500 (i presume this is the scale of velocity that others talk about) Pellet mass = 16 grains (also guessing this is the measurement) *(squared) FPS* X Mass ___________ = 8.8841506 ft/lbs 450240 the other FPS* __________ X2.222 X Mass = 8.888(reoccuring) 1,000,000 seems too close so i guess both work especially as its said 450240 is generaly used (suggesting its a decimal that would make up the difference) Just see
-
Where did the 1,000,000 come from? i been lookin and Ft/lbs = (fps X fps X mass (grains)) / 450240 i think this woul be more likely as it similar to the momentum in my understandin. This is where i found this
