They were slower smaller and weaker for that very reason.....can you imagine the Robinson/LaMotta series of fights with todays advances in training/nutrition ? They were unbelievable fights and they were men off the streets in physical comparison....................its like comparing Roger Bannister to Seb Coe......was Coe a FASTER runner of course he was......was he a BETTER runner not necessarily. Bannister was a sprinter, Coe was an 800metres specialist, but I see the analogy and its misleading.Track surfaces and different shoes have helped, and men are bigger , but running is relative

I think we are in broad agreement about todays skillset versus the old timers, where we differ is on the fitness of the different eras. I say the old school guys could fight as intense as Calzaghe and some of the films I own bear this out. If today's fighters are so much better conditioned, how come so many of the heavier boys are carrying surplus fat?The fighters of 50 years ago would run 8-10 miles daily ,they conditioned themselves to go 15rds at a fast pace not with peds ,but through hard constant training. It's called the championship distsnce for a reason. Im not a fan of punch st

Saunders seems a nice lad but I don't see anything there to make me think he would do anything at world level.I thought his opponent was pretty poor Saturday and although he stopped him I haven't been impressed with his power.

It's hard to imagine any of these old pre 60s fighters who fought much more regularly even getting near him at middle or light heavy, let alone beating him. Actually its hard to imagine Jones beating.Harold Johnson,Archie Moore, Bob Foster,Mike Spinks,Billy Conn,Jack Delaney,Tommy Loughran, and also at 175lbs Sam Langford, Ezzard Charles,Gene Tunney John Henry Lewis,Maxie Rosenbloom, and about 20 others.Later light heavies such as Saad Muhammad ,Dwight Braxton, Marvin Johnson ,Eddie Gregory,John Conteh,Victor Galindez ,would have walked through Jones. Middleweights that would beat him

Calzaghe may be the best fighter the Uk has produced in the last 30 years and that is debatable , but he certainly wasnt the best world wide I could name 20 better.

big George didn't dominate his own era apart from ali who beat him? First time round Jimmy Young....second time round Holyfield,Morrison and someone else i forget who now. Shannon Briggs

The resident speaker gave the most impassioned speech supporting hunting that I have ever heard.I'm not ashamed to say I had tears in my eyes. Let the chips fall where they may If they are guilty so be it!
-
No,you are someone who is happy to give their opinion on a subject of which they are totally ignorant. I would call that weird but,a better term for it might be.IGNORANT
-
No ,you are just someone who knows nothing about a subject but feels the need to jump on the bandwagon. Are you frightened of being the odd one out?

Thanks for the link.I'm in regular correspondence with an old guy ,[even older than me!] who saw Robinson fight. The only know footage of Burley boxing in the public domain is against Oakland Billy Smith.here it is. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gp9lkBqm6bQ This guy Great A, has some good footage to view for free.

This isn't true. Burley never got a title fight because he was ,black, too good, and his style was not fan friendly, plus for some of his career he was managed by Fritzie Zivic whom he beat but Zivic would not defend his title against him. Burley and Robinson's careers did not overlap by much.In1940 Burley was the no3 welterweight,1941 no5 Robinson no 1. By 1942 Burley was rated no 2 at middleweight while Robinson was still a welter.where he would stay for 9 years. Robinson was a black World Champion,Burley did not get the Robinson fight because he would not take a dive, Burley fought at all
