He did, but it wasn't as straight forward as that. Think the staff was called "charcoal" maybe wrong, but it was a Timed match. The bet was something like, gar would stop the Stafford in half an hour, he took a bit longer, so although he beat the dog he lost the match.... Yokel

Like a lot of the early kennels/owners, they started off with Stafford's before the apbt was a big thing. M Dann, springview etc, all had sporting staffords at the start, once the apbt took a hold and started showing their superiority, most serious kennels moved over. Tho some still kept a decent staff, and they would, on occasion, best their transatlantic cousins.... Yokel

Something similar happened it Peterborough a good few years back. Had a mate up that way said it was f.ucking carnage!!! Yokel

A lot were. Homer, zebo, alligator, Chinaman etc etc. Pretty certain gnasher will also tell you that a good few of the alligator dogs that came over and were bred here were the same. It's a bit of a myth this "zero tolerance" of man biters by dog men. We're talking highly strung, well bred sporting dogs, if they Excel at their chosen sport, well, you'll forgive them for their lack of manners so to speak. The real problems start when these dogs find themselves in non working/,pet homes.

I had a bitch here from a line with a reputation for man biters, in fact, the first thing she done when I got her out the crate from picking her up was jump up and nail me in the arm! Gave her a stern word and put her in the kennel. Over the next week or so, it went the same way, plenty of time spent with the bitch, every time she got waspy, back in the kennel. Til she just came right. Always gave her a good long rub down after her walks, stretched her out etc, basically spending loads of one to one time and getting her used to me, and me used to her and her signs. I always found when training

Rustlers Chuckie=Rico x Sweep Lee's Chuckie=Jett x Smutt.... Yokel

Aye, like with most working dogs, it's a real easy job to ruin a young un by giving it too much too soon. Slowly does it. Even when it is chomping at the bit early doors, hold it back some. 14/16 months, if showing willing, and just a little taste, leave it wanting more.... Yokel

From the 1st to the last.... This was the last proper one I owned. Nearly 17 yrs ago now! Yokel

See that, about a month ago now. That rascal wiped a few good dogs out over the years! Funny enough, I remember having a convo with the fella from your neck of the woods mentioned on here earlier. He had butcher round his house, returning something or other after a "misunderstanding" ...he reckoned the geezers knowledge of dogs and the game they played was probably greater than a lot of people involved in it, and had he ever done a gamekeeper turn poacher type of thing, he'd have been a man to beat! I s'pose you spend that much time involved, even if you are on the other side, you're gonna pic

a funny fella and a font of knowledge re: the dogs... Yokel

Never knew his breeding unfortunately. The story behind him, from memory was this... The litter was bred by a fella in London, the fella was raided and banged up for something or other and the sire and dam and pups were taken to Battersea dogs home. Battersea had a policy not to re-home a.p.b.t's at the time and the sire and dam were destroyed. The pups were due the same fate I believe, but due to a contact at Battersea, a hippy dippy animal rescue shelter not far from me took on the litter and put them up for rehoming....this dog cost the princely sum of £25! Two of the litter mates were

Yep, these big houndy things were certainly more thick on the ground back then. Personally I prefer a dog 40lb max, anywhere between 30&40lb. A proper bred dog with a "sporting" temperament is more than enough of a handful at those weights I.m.o.. Yokel.

Is that the "shadow" litter? If so, would that be ch meg up front??? Yokel

Dug out this old pic. First A.P.B.T I owned. Got him late 89, early 90..... around 54lb and standing 22/23in.... Yokel

Yep, if it had just been played as a film about a fictitious character it wouldn't be bad I s'pose, but even then, the little details like the rules, they have him fighting hen Pearce wearing gloves under marquis of Queensbury....in 1805! Always thought John gully's life would make a great film, if done properly! Proper rags to riches.... Yokel

I thought it was shite! Jem's life is well documented, so it's quite surprising this film gets so much of it wrong, it's almost as if the writer couldn't be arsed.... Yokel
