  1. What Mr Darcy said... External HD is probably easiest, maybe with a back up DVD for the stuff you really like. For really important photos like weddings etc I keep a copy on a spare drive on the PC (different one from the operating system) and an external drive as well. When it comes to organising pics I've found the best way is to have seperate folders for months, and the different photoshoots with description & date. Filenames can be longer these days so you can put more info in that, but I always use the date as a reference because then there is no chance of a folder being dup
  2. Best way is to take an hour out with your camera and the manual and just play around with it. I'm not familiar with that camera, but somewhere you'll find how to set it to speed (shutter) or aperture priority, and which button to press to change the speed or aperture. Very basically these settings control how much light hits the sensor. When you use shutter (or speed priority) it does it by altering the shutter speed - if you mainly do action shots you will need a fairly fast shutter speed or the pics will be blurred, so when you're doing kids and dogs rushing around set the camera to 1/
  3. I love the b&w landscape too, that's a stunner. The site seems to run well, but I noticed that the colours in the thumbnails for the portraits look weird, with a very prominent red cast to them. Something to do with the colour profile maybe?
  4. That pony is a nice cross - I've got a pure bred Haflinger and she's got a bit of an attitude problem, like she always wants to go much faster than I do...
  5. Oh dear, you've probably lost your camera now Kay
  6. Looks like you certainly had a great time Nothing quite like the country life! Risk assessments - hmmm makes me cringe when I think what we used to get to as kids (and still do!) but there's still too many accidents involving children on farms but you can't wrap em in cotton wool.
  7. It's enough to make you ning... How do MP's qualify for legal aid???? I thought that was for poor people? wtf is a low income these days?????
  8. Just proves that old Nikon can pull out a good shot if you know what you're doing...
  9. Awww that is so cute I love the way goats always look like they're smiling.
  10. The 550D is a new model and has good reviews so far. It has more MP than the 450D, but that's not necessarily a good thing when it comes to noise at high ISO settings. I'd have a look at the 50D, I think you'll find it's a much more robust camera than the 550D, but consequently heavier and bulkier. If you decided to go for either of these cameras you would have change left out of £1000 to put towards a good lens. As far as lenses go all the Canon lenses will fit on the crop sensor cameras (450, 550, 50D etc) but don't try and use an EF-S lens, dedicated for the crop sensor cameras on
  11. I can't believe how worried I've been about a little bird! Brilliant news to hear it survived the night - hopefully the pair will both survive the breeding season. Well done to you
  12. Agree with Snap - the last shot is a cracker Love all the dog pics Nice lighting in the shots of the dark girl too.
  13. Poor little Bu99ers... I hate parasites. It's so sad but all you can do is put lots of fat and stuff out for them & hope...
  14. Depends how limited your funds are, whether you're prepared to risk S/H... I'd avoid the cheaper sigmas and Tamron lenses. If you want a zoom go for the Canon 70-300 if you want IS go for the Canon 70-300 with IS (if you want a very lightly used one of those for £350 PM me) If you've got money to burn look for a light grey Canon lens with a red stripe on it
  15. I don't use a card reader or the camera software. I just plug the camera into the PC, usually the PC recognises it and a box pops up, one of the options is to open folder or device. If that doesn't happen look in "my computer" and you should see the camera. Open the folder then just copy and paste the images into another folder on your PC. You may have to change the communication setting in the camera menu.
  16. I can't fault my Canon 100mm macro, but if I needed a new macro lens I'd consider the Tamron 90mm macro lens for around £350. It doesn't have quite the length of Darcy's but it is £200 cheaper and has had some excellent reviews.
  17. And its shit isn't it, when you know there's no blame that can be placed on the kit! Sure is, happens to me all the time...
  18. The 300mm f4 is a good lens, the 2.8 is superb, but at a superb price There's always the 400mm too... On the whole prime lenses do the job better than zooms, but they don't have the flexibility. The canon converters are good, I haven't noticed any loss of image quality using the 1.4, but not sure I'd recommend the 2x unless you have a fast lens to start with. They can slow the focusing down a tiny bit, but it's hardly noticeable. The 100-400L IS is a decent lens - if you get a good one... It seems to have been around for a while though and may be due for a revamp.
