Who would you recommend for this then chaps? Any pros or cons from experiences you've all had? I know nothing about building rifles I only shoot them but want a .204 with a faster twist and two companies which seem to crop up is border barrels and valkerie rifles, any thoughts on these?

Have you thought about buying the scope mount for your 170 and mount the housing to that? Can't get much better than that.
-
Great replies above, I to rate the lightforce and the 170 is about the brightest scope mouted lamp but as already said get a dimmer. What you need to ask yourself is how far do you need to see and shoot? The trouble with big housed lamps is they twist when you carry your gun slung over your shoulder and being so big gets knocked easily. If it's a battery pack lamp your after for HMR consider something like the deben max pro if you have a 25mm scope the lamp just snaps on and off the scope easily so also twists back in place easily if knocked but they don't do the snap mount for 30mm scopes, i

pulsar challenger and illuminater ir reticle.

I don't use or haven't even looked through a challenger which was why I 'doubted' my reply. Im only shooting foxes and the magority of shots is in excess of 100yrds so the challenger doesn't really suit my needs. It will be interesting to here how you think the challenger compares to your N550, give us a review of your findings. -
Same here, I shoot them at night then go back the following day to see how far the shot actually was. Trick is get a flat shooting round that takes the guesswork out so you haven't got to worry to much about hold over until you are out about 300yrds then it gets hard enough to shoot anyway with a lamp unless they are in the open. I bought a rangefinder specifically for this but really don't use it at night point and shoot is far easier, but if you are in a truck it will always have it's place for the long range shots when you have more time and not worried about the extra weight. As sa

I may go down in history as I've missed at 15yrds with a rifle!

Don't want to state the obvious but they actually breed in the winter
-
Numbers are down around here, only three sets of cubs congregating on a fair few acres and theres not many of them left either . Did manage to hit good numbers earlier in the year though when they were pairing up right through until the lambs were about. Seems to have done the job on them nicely.East coast, If you've got that many about and your seeing them with the lamp and not shooting them you need to get some traps out over the winter for the 'educated' lamp shy ones. I have great success with the traps and also use a lamp and nv for the 'sharper' ones but the traps are working 24hrs an

Don't know about good, but Im learning. Trouble is when you haven't actually used the nv in question you doubt yourself. The nv's accounted for a couple of charlies on the weekend 2 last night and 1 on friday. Only out for an hour or so each night as rain stopped play but nice to be able to get out earlier with it though as the nights are drawing in. -

I believe they are tubed gen 1 not digital so as far as I know yes they can be burnt. If you buy a IR scope take the battery out. -
There you go vizlauk the two chaps above one with an add on and the other with dedicated, around your price range so fire those questions at them!

Crumbs that's cheap PC good spotting, I thought someone would have snapped that hinged dsa off you aren't they up £150?
-
I did find one with the v3 on it's own but not compared to others it was one with 3 man size targets at 100,200&300 yrds, it lit them up but I can't shoot clearly to 300 yrds with it I know. If you do find it I'd like to see the comparison though.
-
Sounds like add on is the way to go to me. It's a Nv device which attaches to the rear of your day scope by means of a dsa (day scope adaptor) enabling you to use the gun with the same scope day or night, though some find them uncomfortable but personally I have no problem. For your budget you'll pick up a pulsar challenger and dsa but you'll also need an additional IR laser like a N1000 which is also within your budget. As said do a search there's loads on it you might find you really want a dedicated scope. I haven't got the challenger myself but they are good out to 100yrds with the rig

First you need to say what your budget is, how far you are wanting to shoot and what rifle it's going on, there's way to many options to list otherwise.

Any idea what's the vid called? I'm useless sifting through you tube Im a lover of links(let someone else do the hard work!).
-
Glad to hear your happy with it, sounds just the job. Anyone know how they compare to a catapult v3?
-
Agree a 12v lamp and battery does give the best distance but you've got the wires. Personally for me it suits as it gives the greatest distance but for an HMR the LED torches will suffice if that's what your looking for.
-
I looked at these, I've never tried them but from what I gather with three led's it's difficult to get a good throw. You are better off going for a single led with better throw housing. I use a catapult v3 which is plenty bright enough for hmr range but although the beam goes a few hundred yards picking up eye shine it's not bright enough at distance for me with cf. I don't know how they compare to a tiablo but they are not cheap either £120. You would be happy for hmr though 200yrds or less no problem.
-
Your N1000 will work with any NV unit and is about the brightest or furthest reaching IR available. Have you thought about a cheap lcd screen for your ranger? I don't own one or never looked through one but I do believe they give a far clearer picture on an additional screen although this is more suited to vehichle hunting. If you want the best mono for spotting which you could also use for shooting which can be used with or without IR as a mono sell what you've got and get what's been said already...an envis.

Im currently using a catapult v3, not the most expensive or furthest throwing LED but it's decent for what I want. I use it to scan hillsides with abundant cover before switching to nv it just doesn't give enough distance for shooting but decent for eyeshine. Im on foot a lot and shoot across valleys and into hillsides so 300yrds can be a regular occurance with the blitz. The 900lumen torch I returned had the same bulb as the catapult but different reflector housing and although it seemed to have a tighter beam it just didn't have the legs of the cat, I use a 22-250 so when the op wanted a la

Same as you, I thought I'd invest in the brightest possible led torch. I tried a few cheap ebay torches and was relatively impressed so I paid more for decent 700 and 900 lumen LED torches and whilst they gave a decent distance they don't compare to a blitz. If Im out alone I use NV and if I've got a lampman it's the blitz. For my shooting my personal opinion is at the moment the LED torches don't put the same amount of light out there at distance as the blitz. Sorry it doesn't help your scope mounted lamp question but that's the best lamp for CF at distance. I hope somone disagrees because

At the front of the laser you'll have noticed you turn it to adjust the spread of the beam. Just behind that you'll notice a raised ring, unscrew this and the beam adjuster bit will point all over the place until your desired direction is reached and then tighten the ring back up. As for mounting you screw that mounting plate on to something as pc suggested but you don't need a directional mount, the front of the laser is adjustable.

Good advice there ^^^^^^^^^^ Over the next couple of months is definitely the easiest/best time to practice calling/squeaking, cubs tend to come to anything but the practice and education of calling and shooting them within stone throwing distance is great.
