Weighed hi m at 8,15 am and he was 1lb.8.2 took him out with the dog realy bad he didnt stoop baiting off at all,he realy did my head in thismorning spent half hour with him walking around the local fields and i just constantley lifted him back on the glove ( guess this weight is too heavy for him to be settled)... I shall try him again this afternoon if his weight is down a bit ! i dont understand all the time and effort ive been putting in and im still getting knowhere some guys i know have just picked up new goss hawks(2nd hand) and t

Weighed him up late today due to being away with work, Eric was 1lb 6.8 ! Took him up the local fields to see what response i get. Now for the past few days ive introduced the lure, and he has been basically jumping on it but he has been a higher weight ,however today when i got the lure out he flew at it and binded to the lure like he wanted to kill it ! 3 times BANG ON .. i fed him off it today so pleased about that,i did try him to the glove at 10ft he still has the same poor response he did come but wasnt instant ! I think im slowly getting somewhere again now,i think a slig

Today Thurs 26th weighed him at 8,10 am he was 1lb 5,3 with a full cast.i put hi out on weathering with the dog peged down near him again not bad nice and calm,it started ton pour down so had to put him back in mews and waited for a clear spell, 10am tried him the creance with a doc no response at all ! got the crow lure out attached the doc and flicked that about he was more keen on that than my fist but didnt strike it with any conviction but just jumped onto it,oi let him feed off it.. Tried him again on the fist and still no response again done the same with the lure and he f

Im scared to drop any lower than 1lb 5 anymore incase he goes over again ! i think il stick to my plan for the next fw days and see what the score is..thaks for the advice CH

See some people are saying use a lure some say fist ! and is it the same type of response has we get off the harris hawks "instant" or do these goss hawks take a bit of time to come ?

Thats definatly my plan,im going to get him back up to the best response i had with him at 1lb 6.8 and take it from there. I admit i made a very bad mistake ! the sooner people realise falconry/hawking is not all a bed of roses and these things can and do happen to us all " even if some wont admit it" im just glad i knew what to do and was very very lucky indeed.. Back to the weight control and hopefully some sessions with the lure and more distance calling to the glove should do the trick,i suppose i got plenty of time with the cover still being up.. Should i get an instant respon

Thanks crow Hawker like i stated i dont want to cause any arguments, and i only want a top notch hunting hawk like any other guy on here,i have a diary and i shall write it up on here there will be mistakes it it ! And some of the things you will not agree with but i will write it without no lies at all... that way i will "hope "to get the best honest advice off you guys..and please remember this is my first goss hawk and they are definatley not like the harris hawks i have owned in the last few years.. Diary to follow

Guys i am trying my best,i dont want to start any arguments or cyber nonsense " i get that every day in work"... I have kept a diary on eric from the first day i picked him up sept 3rd at 15,30 hrs and have updated it every single day and everything eric has done since then, and ive also recorded the mistakes I have also made one was critical ! Yes im finding it very hard with him but i am learning alongside him, they say a red is difficult i think this hawk "eric" is more so.. I have also taken not just accounts of what we are doing in a diary but also pictures and videos of us goi

    " Eric "

The red i parted with after asking advice off a person that has had hawks for a very long time and the advice i was given was crap ! All the harris hawks that ive owned over the last 10-12 years all worked out well for me,my male died xmas day in a freak accident in the mews in my opinion this hawk was the best i had owned and still is... Has for being scared of him dont think so,The female was good but anybody with a brain and consideration for other people would not take the risk of flying this hawk, she binded to 2 people and even if you think you could turn her around in 2 weeks i was still

My plan is to up his weight to the 1,6 mk then keep him there for a good few days and just get him to come 10-15 ft on the creance and feed him up after each session, then on his response to that il introduce the lure pad and see how it goes..so come next week say wed/thur he should be starting to act like a diff hawk.."FINGERS CROSSED"

Ive read back further in my hawk diary and on thurs 12th he weighed in at 1lb9,3 and he response was ok he jumped the full length of the leash to the glove ! but it started to go down hill from there, maybe ive been trying to get him to come too far on the creance too quickly ! Il take everything you guys have said on board, and from tomorrw i will be upping his weight to around the 1lb 6.5 and il keep it there for a few days and see how it goes.. Thanks to you all for the little advice it means alot guys "THANK YOU!

Ive just checked back in the diary on him and on tues i weighed him at 9am and he was 1lb 6,8 he flew 10 times at approx 13 ft and gave a first class response... wed i droped him slightly to 1lb 6,3 to see if he would come further on the creance and at approx 50ft he did come but the response was very vewry slow....you think i should keep him around the 1lb 6 mk for a few days and see what the outcome is with a shorter distance on the creance ?
  17. milo

    " Eric "

HA Ha ....I took him back out today on the creance and he weighed the lowest since i had him at 1lb 4.3 and still a rubbish response, well not even rubbish..."just no response" ! how low can these hawks fly at surely he will have no strength left if i keep droping him... he will come 5 ft but when i increase the distance the eagerness just goes and he just looks around and takes no notice of me the glove the whistle nothing !..the manning is there hes calm on the glove etc etc and ive easy put in 30+ hours on the glove since ive had him ....his weight is getting silly now

Thanks charlie, you right i have to realise ive not got a harris anymore ! but i do want to get him up trees "now & again" like you state in some places it could be used to an advantage for them and us,i will definatly give it a good go and see if the gos is the hawk for me im not going to give up im going to get him free and off into the hunting fields soon has..Thanks again

    " Eric "

I know this is a diff breed of hawk but all my harris hawks even if flown out of trees and missed would return to my fist if i held it up for them ! if they missed near a post or hedge they would pull up to what ever near to them then i would call them back to my fist. Im sure i did read somewhere in one of " Glasiers" articles/book that it was down to personal preferance and it would be a waste if not flown out of trees ! not wanting to cause a typical iff argument or anything but it would be nice to see you guys views on it all,it is good to share the experiences of hunting hawks/falcons

    " Eric "

Arr so its all off the fist then mate ? does that constitute falconry..( dont want an argument) just want honest views thats all for me to get the right understanding on the gos hawking.

    " Eric "

So if we dont fly these hawks freely from fence posts, trees etc how do we get these fit..? just jump ups !
  23. ive brought my birds into the house on the run up to bonfire night and on bonfire night,i have an half open top mews and i just dont want a fallen firework crashing in on them, and the noise is also an issure, but id say the least time in there the better.

I know Charlie Caller, ive got my trainers at the ready to keep up with him ha ha....im not in a major rush to get him free, hes been with me since sept 3rd and every day he seems to learn so has long has we progress with that im happy, but hopefully end of this week or beg of next week he be free and then the fitness training begins Any of you guys who hunt goss hawks fly out of trees or follow on ? just wondering thats all, because im hoping to get mine maybe to come out of trees, i see it a waste if a goss is flown off the fist all the time how would they get super fit and learn each time i

    " Eric "

To some people size is everything lol... il be happy with a first time response at a decent distance once he does then its time to tag him up and get him off free... dont think it will be long now..just hope the weather holds out over the next few days
