    marten

yeah, a pine marten, its the only type of marten we´ve got, so i only think of it as a marten, sorry about that. they take their fair share of hares and woodgrouse. an awesome hunter actually, an old guy i knew who used to track them in the winter told me that he tracked one for a while untill it went up a tree, he was certain it was´nt up the tree, and there where no other trees close enough for the marten to jump over to. he started circling the area, and yards away he found a freshly killed capercaille and from here the marten tracks started again. the marten must have latched on to th
  5. out with the hound last night, put him on some haretracks and ended up with this little feller up a tree: its about 2 feet of snow right know so it took 3km to make him tree, according to the garmin astro. its quite possible the marten was after the same hare as the dog, which makes it all the more interesting.
  6. if you have a bit of experience and pick the right spot and time of year, you could try at around 15 to 18 months. if you dont have a lot of experience, wait till the dog is at least 2 years.
  7. its an east siberian laika and a plotthound in the first couple, then a western siberian laika. the laika won´t bay untill the cat trees or takes a stand on the ground, while the plott of course bays the entire time, so when you here the siberian you get on your feet:) the cat isnt much of a runner, so if you are a good skier you can catch up with her in just a couple of miles.
  8. MOO:its about 700km between me and bergen, maybe some other time? two terriers is a no go, cruel to the dogs first and foremost, and a bit of a disgrace as well. those yellow, flashy spades in the pics are called structron and are probably the best spades around imo, got glassfibre handles and are´nt too pricey either.
  9. we only have russells at the moment. there are a few jagds around, but they are too hard and too big in my opinion, they are mostly a roedeer and trialsdog up here. the russells dont get hurt that much, and i´ve dug to the dog in the pic three days in a row. i´d like to have a border one day, there are supposed to be some good ones around in scandi. if you saw one of the "lakelands" they have up here, you wouldnt recognise it as one, dont think a single one of them is used in any sort of hunting. we have dug on the same badger twice once, this one broke out when we lifted the dog, he r
  10. yep, the one on the left is slightly smaller then the other one so i´m guessing its a cub. we took three in one dig at the same spot last year.
  11. we try to cull hard in this area fat man, when numbers are lower we can afford to let a few go its a parson mate
  12. had a nice start getting two from the same set.
  13. Just out of interest, who,s better, Charlie Feathers or Mac Curtis,Ever been to Hembsey ?
  14. yeah, i see your point. every dog was treated different though, depending on their initial response. the hand was meant as a bit of back up, and also too show the pup what we wanted from here, being a pup her focus is a bit wandering.
  15. i dont know if its the best way, but a couple of weeks ago we tried out the artificial way of entering a terrier. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhmr32g4xOs fun for the dogs and a good way to see how far a long the pup is mentally, also builds a bit of selfesteem.
  16. sea trout for the next month untill the ice breaks, then its brown trout all the way
  17. looks like a tiny bitch bryan, around 10-11"? nice terrier anyhow
  18. thanks, saw lots of grouse and tracks everywhere, so its looking good for next year
  19. took a trip up in the mountains the other day, meaning to stay for a few days, but the temperature dropped to -18 so i figured one night would do. a few pics: love the grouse in its winter clothing. place called snowy grave, lots of history in the mountains if you care to look for it my trusty companion calling it a night in front of the fire with a bottle of caol ila short trip, but great weather
  20. how big is this local patch of yours? cause if its only a small piece of land, you should`nt expect to find a whole lot of earths anyways, and if this is the case building artificials won´t do you any good. the foxes you are seeing could be just passing trough, but you could very well be successfull if you try to bait them in to the earth you`ve already found.
  21. there is an abundance of badgers up here, so thats why we only hunt black and whites with the terriers, and that is also the reason we dont let any go. we have concentrated our badgerhunting to an area were we hunt hare and woodgrouse, and its going to be interesting to see if we are able to influence the population. we also do a bit of foxhunting with hounds and marten-trapping in the same area, although these are`nt as numerous as the badgers.
  22. thanks for the comments, the bitch is 18 months at the moment.
