Having read through this thread so far little of any help

1st of many

Had a chat with Phil a while back, nice bloke not trying to push his dogs on me and seemed to know what he was talking about
-
Have used both slip and free running, different dogs different situations abilities, generally in company I"d use a slip. However at one time me and mate lamped together alot,2 bitches free running bitches would run on command it worked well as we at times could have 2nd bitch running whilst 1st was retrieving.

Fair points mate, mike sells pups 200-300 quid, less than a lot of other folk. But your not wrong in what you say. cheers, I paid £150 for the first whippet and £400 each for the other two. All three were healthy and looked after so why the differance in price? If you go on the whippet forum you get some stories about the cost of rearing a litter but anyone who says they dont make money from a large litter of KC reg whippets is crazzy. I actually dont have a problem with people malking a bit of money but be honest and admit it. A good friend of mine has three w

Your ss bred bitch I see your delighted with her and used your mates show bred dog as stud if I'm reading your posts right? How do you rate your bitch against this show bred stud? Workwise Y.I.S Leeview They both work well using there noses well, both will face cover, both retrieve, both ferret and both have very good stamina and yes I can see where your attempting to go with this. As you will see I started my post with saying there are plenty of other lines that will work admirably (and there are some that wont) I also suspect that as with most dogs the owner/trainer has a lot to do w

Your not wrong there are plenty of other lines out there doing there job day in day out, one of the best I"ve seen is show bred through and through and is in fact the sire to a litter I recently bred. However the original poster asked specifically about MB bred dogs and I at least have tried to answer him based on my own experience of owning one of the said dogs. I truly find her to be a honest capable dog carrying out the tasks that ANY whippet should be able to and am more than satisfied with her abilities or I wouldn"t have bred from her,one of the pups is staying here and will be tested
-
I have a MB bred whippet,I haven"t seen many others of this strain work, however on the performance of my own bitch I would say it would do you just fine. She has good prey drive, uses her nose well and isn"t afraid to face cover, she has enough pace for bunnies and is capable of taking longears and yes she has stamina. You could go direct to MB or there are plenty of folk out there breeding from his stock both back to ss bred dogs and some to out crosses and yes they have the bottle for charlie. It"s really down to what game your wanting to take, hope this has been helpfull and good luck
-
Well mate if your still even reading this thread I wonder if you"ve been able to come to any sort of sensible decision as it seems to have got slightly side tracked
-
I will add here though that I would not be keen on keeping a lamp dog that would not run down the beam prey unseen as I suspect that you would miss a lot of game
-
Yep it all comes down to what game your lamping for me its generally been rabbits and the odd hare for dog meat and of course our red friends.
-
Most of the best lamp dogs I have seen have been 23" and under a pal of mine has this season lamped and caught over 500 rabbits in 7 weeks with a 19" whippet the same dog also saw plenty of daytime work through the same period
-
What does hight and how far a dog can see have to do with its abilities on the lamp, a good dog should go down the beam if it can see anything or not as many squatters are not visible to the dog untill he"s allmost on them. Also due to your hight and dependent on the lay of the land you may be slipping your dog on something you can see but the dog can"t but you would expect your dog to follow the beam untill he becomes sighted
-
Nobodys ever seen his dogs work, well wurzlebert seems to have scotched that arguement
-
I wonder how many times the whole MB/sooty sam thing has and will be debated and all to the same end NONE, for there will allways be those in favour and those against with some seeming to have a personal grudge and some so obviously jealous of his success.
-
Well done mate keep at it You"ll be fine with the 2 hobs living together as long as you don"t introduce a jill into the mix, they would probably still be ok untill breeding season comes round and then when the jill comes into season and your hobs come into musk you would have problems.

Have sent you a pm Link to pedigrees http://thewhippetarchives.net/testmating.php?dam=92558&sire=46403&gens=6

I"m pretty certain its to do with the change in the weather, have come across some very late summer leverets
-
Nice pup mate, good luck with him
-
They all look as if they"d be better off in a rescue centre
-
when I was a lad you saw a lot of staff/whippets about, generally good grafters and as most around here mainly wanted them for pot fillers they did the job. The smaller workers seemed to lose out a bit when hare coursing came into its own and folk moved on also there are more of the the big rabbits about with antlers now than there ever was. As I say most kept pot fillers, a lot of familys wouldn"t have seen a deal of meat without them.
-
Take it you dont own a running dog
-
Never had one myself but over the years there aren"t many crosses that haven"t been tried, you"ll often see adds for pups from these various crosses for sale, in my opinion its just folk trying to reinvent the wheel
