Was once maybe, is it still ?

Id think winning the league or the FA cup would excite a manager more.

The fact Jack Grealish is willing to sit on the bench for England when he'll be picking up League/Fa Cup/Champions League medals for City probably shows what an honour it is.

Representing your country is still the epitome of the game mate any player will say the same.....why would it be any different for managers.

Probably , but who would you get in though ?

    honest thoughts  whose free ?

    Graham Potter is free.

Lee Carsley would be a natural caretaker manager if Southgate walked so he's free.

Do either of them tickle my fancy no not particularly but id kiss their feet if it meant getting shot of big nose !

few players were more competitive than gerrard , lampard , the nevilles and Rooney .

I wouldn’t let any of them near the England team .

if we are going big and speaking post tournament , I think we could do a lot worse than postacoglou

So keeping in mind that post tournament means possibly the best current striker in world football will be past his best for the following tournament,do you think its too late for this one and we'll just be left with the usual post competition " oh well next time " feelings ?......we havent had an opportunity like this before and may never have it again i genuinely think its a now or never scenario.

That brings the absolute inevitable question ….

if not Southgate , then who ?

has Southgate lowered the bar of the merit to be England manager ?

You ? Me ? ....literally anyone with a bit of competitive spirit will do.

Heres a fact someone told me the other night i wasnt aware of......no English manager has ever won the Premier League !

f**k it pay Pep whatever he wants.

I think that's pretty much where I am mate, the last Euros was the best since 96, no doubt.. I've never been "we're gonna win it" type with |England, but like you say you can genuinely hope now... these lads are so young that, Kane is still only 30 ffs! that the next manager will have the most mature set of youngsters we have ever had, with a new crop not far behind, we're finally doing it the right way, like Spain, Holland, Germany have for years

My hatred for Southgate aside 😄....do you think its too late to bring in a replacement for him before the Euro's ?

Personally i think it could be just what this squad needs......some sort of organised chaos with a " just let them go and play " attitude rather than the rigid formations and set structures of Southgate......almost like letting boisterous youngsters loose to run wild.......like you said earlier the off pitch stuff is all disciplined and together now so just let them go out and get after teams kill or be killed.

No, they have achieved playing absolute shite…..that’s the point.

    Or.....

Moyse fielding bang average players has won a trophy.....compared to....

Southgate fielding world class players has won nothing.

Depends how you're looking at it i suppose.

I never liked the 2 defensive midfielder system either mate, but just off the Belgium game he didn't play that, only Rice held. I don't think Foden had a very good game to be honest, that happens, Mainoo and Bellingham shined and Maddison looked good when he came on. I agree though, Southgate has come as far as he can and the next man has the golden opportunity of a lifetime. I hope (obviously) we win the Euros, and I think we will look back on this period as Englands transition from old to new, we are now producing the type of players we always wanted to, I get that comes from the clubs but there must be some investment from the FA/England set up, Southgate was U21s before and i think has pushed this investment in English youth very well...

It's too early I think, but Michael Carrick is doing things the right way, he's well respected by most, and unlike Gerrard, Lampard, Rooney is under the radar (much like his career), but I've a feeling he'll be the best of that bunch eventually... too big for him now perhaps though.

Again, intricate tactics are not my thing but its what Southgate played against Brazil and what he'll resort to any time he feels danger.....for me its just a basic lack of sporting courage it would be like Mike Tyson trying to win on the jab.....no,commit to your own strengths.....be mindful of whats coming back but dont let it dictate your whole game.

You're absolute right we are now producing the type of players we always wanted.......who'd of thought it eh !

    Or…….

A team that can be top half in the hardest league in the world with a European trophy under their belt and in the late stages of another……

Not sure i follow what you're getting at mate......unless of course you think West Ham have under achieved lately ? :whistling:

.. You'd hope those experiences are valuable next time these lads are in that position.

Thats my whole issue mate.....Southgate doesnt learn from these things and will do exactly the same the next time and the next time.

Something struck me in these posts about that Italy game, so I looked up their starting 11 for that game…..how the f**k have we got the cheek to think we should just steam roller over that Italy team ?

Granted Italy are not the force they once was but f***ing hell, just trying to score goals against some of the classiest most experienced defenders in the world is going to require moments of magic.

You are talking about players who know every trick in the book from a footballing culture that taken pride on its defensive ability.

And then you had Insigne and Imobili to deal with, you can’t just pay players like that no mind while your surge forward.

It was the age old battle of youth & energy versus experience and guile.......like you say they take pride in their defensive ability yet we did the hard part scored and battered them for the first 35 minutes all we had to do was continue taking their ageing legs but what did we do....sit back and let the old boys play the game at the pace they wanted to.......Southgate was gutless that day and we deserved what we got.

All really good points mate, and hard to disagree with, and you have as much right as anyone to talk tactics amongst shit kickers like us, you probably watch more football than most, loads of lads I've played with haven't a clue, they don't watch the game like that...

I didn't see the Brazil game, but I didn't think the Belgium game was defensive, Bellingham and Mainoo rotated constantly and Belgium were chasing shadows in midfield, Rice is sacrificed for this agreed, plus as keep saying we play with very high full backs, Gomez and Chillwell were in the last 3rd more than the first 3rd most of the time. When I played (shit standard in comparison obviously) it was always 1 full back went the other stayed and covered, now both full backs go and the holding midfielder covers, Pep lets the Full back and the centre back go and make the numbers up in Midfield... Now Southgate has nowhere near the technical mind of Pep, and can't work with players every day to get the drills right every time, but I can see what he is trying to do.

Agreed completely on the Italy game, we had that game won in the first half if the players were let loose, these next 8 years if the star players stay injury free you are certainly looking at our golden generation, Braithwaite is looking very good at Everton and will probably move to a "big" club this summer, he looks to be the perfect modern centre back, if we get that right I can't really see a weakness.

This will be Southgates last tournament, I think he has done a lot to get people back behind the team, it feels profesional now, you don't have all the shit stories and scandals coming out of camps, he has put some discipline in place and codes of behaviour... the young lads come over really well in interviews etc

Who would you like to see take over from him?

A lot are saying Eddie Howe, would he leave the Newcastle project or is his time coming to an end anyway?

Be interesting to see who takes over.

Surely the fact that Foden didnt have a touch in the opposition box for 90 minutes is concerning....all the attacking talent we have is being stifled by a manager thats terrified of getting hit on the counter, hence the 2 defensive midfielders it offers us no real commitment to anything creative Southgate shits his pants at the thought of playing an attacking middle of Bellingham/Rice/Maddison i wouldnt even be surprised if he plays Rice/Henderson at the Euros......the likes of Pep/Klopp have the same issues to deal with but they deal with them by being brave, something we can now afford to do ourselves given the quality we have.

Regards who next.....yes i suppose Howe/Potter if we're sticking with an English manager ( which we should )....even the lad Lee Carsley if the FA insist on someone safe and an in - house appointment....he's done well guiding the under 21's to European success and plays attractive football.

I just think this is an opportunity we cannot miss.....yes Southgate has achieved everything the FA brought him in to achieve, but all those things you mention take place off of a football pitch and now its time to address what takes place on it and he's proven he's not the man to do it....he was a political tidy up job and thats done now.....now let these talented young lads off the leash and get after teams.

    Genuine question on that lads,

Who and what system would you have played?

I didn't see the Brazil game, but I thought that was a positive performance against Belgium barring 2 howlers and a back 4 that was shaky but won't be close to our back 4.

the full backs played high, the interchanging in the midfield was great, Toney looked very good, Mainoo looked excellent, Bellingham is genuine world class as is Rice in his position. I'm not sure how Southgate was negative last night?

I get that he has been and is pretty careful in tournaments, but in the last 2 years Bellingham has become a world star (who comes close, only Mbappe for me), he is allowed to play where he wants and control the game, his other issue is our weakest area is central defense, so he has to use Rice as that deep defensive midfielder as he is the best at it, unfortuantley he has proven this year for Arsenal what a great all round midfielder he is, so to be tasked with the basics "nuts and bolts" of the game must frustrate him, absolute credit to the man though epitome of a professional, I rate him so highly!

Our starting 11 is enough to beat any team in the world, I get the frustration with Southgate, a couple of penalties the right way and we could be world cup and european cup holders, the truth is we lost both so the facts don't lie...

I think this will be Southgates last tournament anyway, so win or lose we will see what another manager can do with this current crop soon enough.

I never get too tactical as having never played the game properly i dont have a right to think i can out think an international coach but what i do understand is basic sporting mentality and competitive spirit so as an ex sportsman i just cant understand his decision making with the weapons he has at his disposal....to me Southgate lacks the qualities it takes to be a winner in sport.....he has a team there that any Premier League manager would dream of having,im convinced that if you gave this side to any of the top 10 Premier League managers they would win major tournaments.

An international manager has the luxury of seeing players excel in roles week to week and then fit them into his own formation he will have seen how Arteta allows Rice to get forward and how exceptional he is in that role yet continues to play him as a second holding midfielder....similar how he takes Bellingham out of a 10 role where he is showing to be one of the best in the world there.....2 holding midfielders when we have probably the best striker in our lifetimes.....2 holding midfielders has failed Southgate every time he's used it in tournament football and now in a friendly against a weak Brazilian side who sat 6th in South American qualification and havent won in their last 4 games, have a brand new manager etc he uses it again !....he is clearly not learning and will take us into the Euros the same way and we'll come up short again......he is crushing the attack of England and that is the sides strength he is a cowardly manager with a " dont get beat " attitude yet in reality he has won only 4 games out of 25 against top 15 ranked sides.

His mid game decision making in important games is poor,1 nil up after 2 minutes against an ageing Italian side in the Euros instead of going for the throat we sat back and just gave the game away, exactly the same against France in the World Cup....1 nil up against Croatia they adjusted and we didnt, ended up losing 2 - 1.

With a group of players who are more than capable of just going out and playing on the front foot and putting teams away he is ridiculously cautious....we have at least 5 world class players....Argentina won the World Cup with 1 world class player.

We talk about golden generations France had one,Brazil had one,Italy,Spain,Germany have all had them but now this is our golden generation we are wasting it with a manager who is not brave enough to set teams up to attack and play to our strengths, who lacks tactical knowledge or managerial ability....we have a potentially great team but have a Championship level manager playing Stoke football.......with his cv he should never have been given the job, and his yes man mentality will once again only go to show the priorities of our FA if they dont replace him........Rant over.

As I always harp on about to people brother, go and join in !

You don’t need to smash windows or post dogshit through letterboxes or wait for 5000 other people to turn up for a March that is really just an excuse for a day away from the old woman and getting on the Stella for half of the crowd.

As you know me and my wife were both involved with schools from governorship to reading with the kids a couple of mornings a week, going and helping at the fete and the sports day, watching the sports games, raising funds, being on the PTA

My mrs did the Sunday school in the church.

All despite not having an exam between us or being what I’d call religious in any way, shape or form.

Bit it don’t have to be school or church, it’s the football coach, the scout leader, the bloke who gets a group together picking up litter in a park, the rugby coach, the girl guide leader, the person who volunteers to be an extra body on scout, guide, school, sports team trips….it’s all those million little things where you have direct contact with young minds.

A mate of mine started picking up litter in a neglected park down the road, council didn’t do a thing like they don’t anywhere except if it’s for black history month or dewali or some other nonsense……so he just nicked it !……he built a big cafe and meeting building for local groups like new mums and mens sheds.

He built a mens shed and had a gardening group and got new play equipment installed and a BMX concrete stunt track.

Didn't ask the council for a scrap of permission, just did it, went out, raised the funds and did it…..and by the time he did it, it was such a positive thing that the council didn’t have the bollocks to say “No” because it would have made them look terrible.

He held concerts and festivals and generally got the whole community together in something really, really positive…..

But it’s takes a hundred little cogs to make that big machine work, somebody doing something minuscule in order to effect the bigger machine.

Dont let these unwanted guests keep stealing our thunder, f**k me if some local black learns to use crayons it gets a slot in the local paper and a picture with the mayor…..just get out and do your tiny little bit, show your own what we are still capable of, show the young, be a face and voice for everything we have always been before they convinced us we were second best and can’t tie our own shoe laces.

Theres a lot of propaganda on media, but our young will remember the face and the words of the people they see in the flesh.

There you go fantastic.....in times of adversity it takes guts and character to stand up for your own......good on the man.

Do you not think that’s exactly the same as saying “well, they will never win so what’s the point” when we vote though mate ?

Lads like you and me are always on about voting for people who we both know will never win, but we both know it’s not the point, the point is doing something rather than just swallowing it.

You go out delivering leaflets for your pal who represents things we both know will never win, and I remember how disappointed you was when he was let down by the electorate….but you’d go out and deliver those leaflets again tomorrow because it’s what you can do.

Why is it a different principal with other things ?…..in fact I’d go as far as to say it’s a much easier win because all people have to do is keep their money in their pocket and that is as private as it gets…..an individual need never show their hand if they don’t feel comfortable.

Obviously in football, the world gets to see an empty stadium so that a massive public f**k you to all this nonsense where as only accountants see lost revenue but the principal is the same.

I honestly don’t see the difference, lost causes is all we have ever had.

I say this to people all the time mate, you cant have all your battles and confrontations through the back door sometimes however uncomfortable it might be you just have to back yourself in a head to head its like the whole taking the knee thing.....your view was that people should stop going to football,my view was to go to football and make as much f****n noise as possible showing your displeasure, which many of us did to the point the tv started editing the sound out !.....your " stay at home " view would not have even been noticed !

The voting thing, yes use your vote,do what you can....but again i remember you digging a few people i know out who were trying to make a stand....i only remember because i didnt like what you was saying, these people were making an effort to stand up in the fight that you ran off from with the same " stay at home " attitude.

I dont mean to be impolite to you and am not knocking you as you make some brilliant posts on the subject, you say things some people are not even willing to say but there has to be more than just talking about it and your theory to most things of this nature is of the " stay at home " variety...marches/public shows of strength etc.

Your post above talks about " empty football stadiums " and again, you are just showing how totally out of touch you are with modern football grounds if you think thats achievable......not everyone inside football grounds are " proper " footie fans these games could be sold 10 times over how do you plan to tell a thousand Chinese tourists not to go to the game because us lads are trying to make a political point ! ......the FA and clubs in general dont care if " proper " fans like you or me go to the game just as long as the tickets are sold.....how many games are sold out yet theres loads of empty seats, you and me dont matter mate........again,its too late in the day to try and be devious and sneaky with huge corporations and governments you are of no value to and who can replace you at the drop of a hat.

  19. Im done with Southgate i think he should of gone after the World Cup.....to me it will be an absolute disaster if we dont win a major tournament with this current squad of players,we know being a yes man is the only thing that got him the job in the first place as he'd done nothing as a coach other than take Boro down....but if our FA care as much about football as they do about politics they'll get a proven top coach in and pay him whatever he wants to get the best from this squad.

My Hammers set up to play negative football for good reasons and i get it.....but England have a side full of world class players at the top of their game and will be playing tournament football why is he sending them out so apprehensive......i fear we'll never win anything with Southgate in charge and will probably miss the best opportunity we've had in years to get our hands on a trophy.
