Don't get me wrong I know the whole country sees bad weather from time to time but on the fell and moors it can be a hostile place it can be fine one minute an hour or so later hail and thunder storms or blizzard like conditions both man and dog have to be up for the job a good coat on a dog is a must for me I had a Russell afew years ago that worked well in the ground and rocks but on the open hill and high ground the weather would punish her the bitch not so much the cold but the wind and driving rain atb rt

For the lads that are using the beagle crosses will they run then in and are they any good at marking what kind of distance will the hold a line for thanks atb rt

Lots of places like that around our way and quarrys also and what I find works best is a dog that goes into his quarry flat out not giving him and time or space to think or become comfortable getting him worried and on his way . Something that I think needs mentioning on this thread is the weather when working in the fell country you/myself what a result as quick as possible not just for the sake of the terrier that's work but that of the one/ones that are tethered up and men also as the weather can change in no time and it's no fun when you get caught out in it

Rob I don't know mate I like a dog that stays a limited time 30 mins to a hour . That bitch is 9 years old and I can only recall having to dig to her a dozen or so time the longest being hour and 25 mins in a rock spot but she's bolted no end of foxes for me but its not to say i would want a kennell full of terriers like her but having onè is really handy . And if he's not for bolting and I can dig it il use one of my other terriers atb rt Rat face the bedlington on couples I bred as iv got her dam they're line bred local to me ATB RT

Sky and bonnie bonnies the bedlingron type did her first season work just gone and did ok flushing afew from in and on the rocks the Russell my main terrier stands off and just bays after putting one in a stop end she'll only stays about half hour in earth so shes great for bolting in earths the rocks

Tank he was a first cross bedlington lurcher I retired him to a pet home beginning of last season age 11 I saw a massive difference in the dog in the last two seasons the days become longer and harder for him and he was struggling the next morning which I didn't like to see as I was working him Saturday and Sunday week in week out a mate loaned me a very good bitch beginning of last season to take some of the load off the old dog .ATB RT

waiting for a bold after that never came

The old dog again waiting for a bolt .

picture of one of the bitches after bolting a brace from a rocky earth .

I also dig with mine and they do the job but for me I think they make better rock working terriers rather than earth dogs . The argument that a rock dog is work more than a earth is a load of ballocks its all down to the individual I'm blessed with some fantastic country to hunt down side alot of places that hold are either deep rock ground , rock piles , shafts or level I just make the most of what I got I suppose as do most .

A mate of mine told me of a Russell dog his mate had up north 20 odd year's ago said he was about 16 half tts and narrow as a cat and he's was a he'll of a good rock working terrier and that's all he did work ATB RT

Iv seen it afew times stop end with one of my bitchs the young bitch out of her had a good first season what will become of her who nows she may get harder as her dam did starting of but her sire could and would kill them in the rock and had spent two and three days in the rocks on a number of occasions. I also like leaving young Uns break a fresh carcass up with the hounds ATB RT

on the working bedlington thread on here there are a couple of serious rock dogs on there and some good earth dogs to both border and lakeland hybrids but they do really well in the rock a little bit of leg is good but they need to be narrow with it atb rt
-
I hear what your saying zig one of the bedlington here smashes then and just holds on till she can get a better grip and more ofter than not he's out and on his way otherwise I'm sitting it out waiting for a couple of hours for her to show but she's got the habit of eating them in the toground . What type of bitch did you lose zig

my main bolting dog is a Russell bitch she's small 10tts but you can hear her a mile off takes very little stick the other 2 terriers iv got on are bedlington hybrids a touch of fell/lakeland in them small and narrow the older bitch is mute the young bitch out of her iv got did her first season just gone the first fox she bolted came from the rocks ofter the hounds put him in and she worked all season hard mixing but her mother was the same way starting out ATB RT

I work mine in and on the rocks there's something about the rocks that excite me watch a bolt from the rock and crag is something else iv not got digging dogs but in the rock their worth their wait in gold and a lot of lads with good/decant digging dogs wouldn't enter them in the rocks we had a young bitch stuck season before last in a crack under a big slab we had her out but I had to push myself in hook the bitchs collar with the bar and the huntsman and another lad pulled us both out by my feet

I had a half cross bedlington whippet just under 23" and used him for what your intending to use yours for he was a great dog gutsy as hell he would work cover mark and work with a terrier in the ground and on afew occasion he's broken through by the time iv got to them killed his last fox age 10 after pulling him out of the rocks as the terrier worked it by that stage in his life his best running days were behind him but in cover or from a bolt he could still get on terms but in the open he just didnt have enough wind left in him to catch I'd love another like him of the same cross but I th

iv seen plenty work some KC dogs hybrid dogs both border and fell types at work and most will rat hunt bush but out of what iv seen only a small amount want it in the ground but i do know afew decant lads than got then in the ground also the honest answer is they'll work like any other type of terrier given the chance you pay your pound you take your chance the ones iv got here are hybrids and they work very well for the tarrain I go on . But for me the biggest problem with bedlingtons for bushing is they can throw a delft ear and can hold a line which isn't great if your out on rabbits and a

Working Bedlingtons 2005
russell tuck replied to swanseajack's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
The truth is this season not been great for me work wise the dogs done alright but it was time I struggled with both work and family commitments . One of my to working bitches was only worked one the other had her fare share but my main concern was getting a young bitch I bred started and putting/focusing as much time/work in front if her as possible but on the hole it was bad I had some good hunting and memorys of retiring my old lurcher dog to a pet home and the starting of a young terrier bitch I bred ATB RT -
There's a few of them local to me in ventilation shafts dotted all over the hills the forestry commission put them in afew years back I believe atb rt

Working Bedlingtons 2005
russell tuck replied to swanseajack's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Only one thing that matters to me with bedlingtons and thats work what iv got in my kennals goes back to M.E and S.Js stuff with one bitch heavely bred to the old stuff and they serve me well and have open the eyes of many folk and have earned the respect of afew huntsmen and terrier lads . The only problem infront of me is the lack of proven dog to serve decent bitches i know of afew young dogs coming through but time will tell . It was only this week i read a on a site with someone offering a bedlington at stud . Regaurd less to whether its a bedlington or any other type/breed of terrier i w
