  1. some of the old growers here swear by seed and do well, i always go on what they say and so far its worked, one old boy last year scrapped all he,d grown he said they wont make it, too wet boy,his ground is light and well fertile, they never manure an onion patch, but but always give some grow more when their up,and spray over before they come.
  2. stuttgarter giant, red baron, sensiu yellows, ill grow some ailsa criag from seed, the red baron last year were the best in a long time and i pickled some in white vinegar, and i have one jar left, and they kept real good to, last year was too wet, i dried them in the shed and im on the last of the stuttgarter,my ground is now ready and if we dont get a frost this week in they go.

  6. yes bb, i have to agree with you, i dont know if the lady in question is a digging woman, people get terriers and have no idea , the f&m can only advise, ive told her to ring local kennels.

  9. i dont have a greenhouse yet,so im putting them on the kitchen sill, gets warm there early and we get sun all day, being south facing, went into wilkinsons, they had like a poly greenhouse a walk in one,£40,got some albert bartlett spuds, rooster and apache, try them in bags.
  10. lets hope we have a drier season for growing, got me garlic in,thats all at minute, spuds chitting in the shed, last year was not particulary good, everyone on the allotment had blight,no shallots, leeks did well, and me marrows and snips.
  11. we trapped a chalk stream near haverhill a few years ago and were getting good catches daily, then my mate over trapped got greedy and were selling them, and it finished it,have,nt been there since, going to try the ivel and ouse this year.
  12. i bought some chilli plants last season from ebible bites, they have a greenhouse full and the woman there knows her stuff, their just at chawston beds, and a fiver a plant, i ended upwith so many chillis, i dried loads, cooked with them, gave some to friends,im going to grow some this time from the seed i kept back,i see theres more heavy frost coming next week, hopefully the weather will pick up after, and we can all get on i the garden, some early get peas in.
  13. get your ground ready for spuds,1st earlys, start them chitting, and get them in end of march, and you,ll start eating them in june.
  14. woodcock dont eat anything bad,and they are to small to gut.they dont gut snipe either.
  15. bb,i work across a good few thousand acres, and any means to keep the rabbits down helps, me out, if i had a fence line to put drop traps in i would, live catchers work well, and i dont have the time to just do one job, i can pick 20 rabbits in half the time, in the morning, them check what ever needs doing, i make my living from what i do, i dont have the time to take people i dont know around the estate, nor the patience to trust them, hope that throws more light on it, thanks dd.
  16. some places you can ferret, some shoot, lamp, other spots require other methods,if i wanted ferreters id have said,i work single handed and cant stick to one job all the time, some are in gardens where i cant shoot or ferret or snare, and they require live catch!
  17. i have thought of that but there is no fence line, mainly open areas with dykes and small patches of blackthorn, any other suggestions.i do snare a few, shoot some and where possible ferret.
  18. anyone help me out here, been looking to by some live catchers, but they are expensive, any one know where i can get them reasonably priced, cant find them under £25.
  19. this has been a good thread, nice to see someone else getting the info they need,as regarding needles, i have a variety, old wooden ones, which i favour and they are from 6ins-10ins, the mesh gauges are probably as old as me, made from some hard wood and comfortable to work with.
  20. ive made my own nets, probabaly for the past 35yrs and still enjoy it, fox nets, long nets, poke nets, ditch nets, all good fun, and to my way of thinking, every rabbitting man should know how to do it,ive had lads come to me and ive shown them, and because of lack of dedication they,ve stopped, and i end up making them, and they buy them from me, i dont mind, gives me a bit of beer money .every year i have lads come back for nets, which is nice,i stash a bit of what ive made and get more twine and ring, i like doing it,i make to order and ,any size.
