  1. No hawk gets bit up on my watch lol
  2. I've had another couple of rabbits this week but the pics look the same as every other one of a Harris on a kill so I took one of my pointer doing what pointers do......telling you and the hawk there's something right in front of it. Sadly this one got away.
  3. I bet your pleased he's doing well for his new owner. It's never nice parting with any animal but when you know its to a good home it makes it easier.
  4. You've done right by the hawk, get another one and carry on. Early next season get it up here for a few days on the dales, we should be able to get it entered easily enough on a few dumb young bunnies. The offers there mate.
  5. It happens mate, only the bull*******s never have failures or things go wrong for them. I've enjoyed reading your posts. I hope your back in action next season.
  6. It's been another week of wind and rain, there hasn't been a chance to fly the hawk up on the dales so I've only been able to get out locally which for me means a very limited amount of land. She tried several times to catch rabbits but the wind gusts always seemed to be appear at the worst possible time. She got to kill a vole on Wednesday and then on Friday she took herself off after a rabbit but before I could get to her she spotted something on a lakes island and after tree hopping for a while dived down and caught it. It was getting dark so after ringing for help I attempted to wade acros
  7. When I was working lurchers it was £15-£20 three or four times a week. For a few years I followed hounds all over Britain and was spending a few grand a season due to fuel,B and B's, eating out etc. I'm flying a hawk now and the wind and rain has stopped me getting out onto the dales as much as I want to. I genuinely wish I was putting a few hundred quids worth of fuel in the car every month lol.
  8. I've done a good amount of rabbiting with lurchers and a Gwp up the northern dales areas,I think enough to have formed an opinion and I can't think of any reason to use a flushing dog with a hawk rather than a pointer up the reedy dales or moorland. The Hprs will flush anything they find in those areas when you want them to. Obviously any dog can be taken out and will provide quarry for a hawk to fly at but that's not the issue. If like me your using a Harris I can't think of any reason to be walking over open dale with a dog that will flush pheasants out, the bird is going to struggle to c
  9. Terriers go to ground and there are very few places in Britain where we can be sure a fox or badger hasn't popped into a hole overnight. I spent many happy years hunting with Plummer terriers but personally I can think of no reason to use one with a hawk when the gundog breeds are more than capable of serving our needs.
  10. I'd have thought up in the dales it would be useful to have a dog pointing where you can prepare the flight. My pointer does run in sometimes on rabbit which has spoilt some opportunities especially in all this wind when the hawks up against it anyway.
  11. Terriers go to ground and the plummers I had ranged out further than what I want from a hawking dog. Everywhere I go with my hawk there are fox and badger earths so using a terrier isn't an option for me.
  12. I've got chaps but haven't been running into many lately so don't fit them all the time,I've heard reports of them hindering footing as well so they don't seem a guarantee against bites. Something to think about though. I should carry a catapult, I own one so I might as well carry it.
  13. My hawk caught a squirrel this morning after flying it through several trees and into a thick bush. I had to cross a water filled ditch which was much deeper and wider than usual with all the rain we've had. Anyway I didn't make it and landed a foot short getting soaked up to the arse and wellies full of water. The hawk had the squirrel by its back end which could have caused her to get bitten up but it was biting the twigs around her feet. I had to get them onto the ground then get the situation under control. With the squirrel pinned down to make sure my hawk was safe I would normally kill i
  14. Cheers, I'd seen pictures in books of wooden ones so thought of something that would be lightweight and easily extended.
  15. Ha ha It was cold today. Looking forward to some Lamping.
  16. The perch seemed to work well, I don't trust her 100% with the ferrets yet, I won't risk someone else's anyway, but I can hold her jesses while she's on there which stops my arm from aching lol. In time I hope I can carry her about on it giving her a better view on the reedy land. The weather looks too windy up there for the weekend so I'll have her out locally with the dogs when I can. I really like to see the longer flights on the hills we've been ferreting. I was a bit worried earlier this season that I wasn't doing very well, not getting her enough flights etc etc etc but I'm happier now.
  17. I took a day off work as the weather forecast for the weekend was bad. The hawk had a good flight catching the rabbit as it was going into a dry stone wall but I couldn't help her quick enough and after I'd jumped the wall I saw the rabbit fight its way free and run up the centre. There were a few other flights with her flying over the wall trying to catch the rabbit as it came out the other side and she was rolling around with another but as they went into a patch of reeds she couldn't get a grip on it and it escaped. The hawk was unlucky today but got to drop on a couple of rabbits that the
  18. I joined a club!!!!!! I learned that I should just obtain a hawk straight away because I sounded sensible on the phone lol.
  19. Well the weather has ruined any chance of doing much this week. I would have taken a day or two off work if the weather was favourable but there didn't seem much point with the wind and rain. I was up the dales at first light yesterday because the met office were stating the wind wouldn't be too bad for the first two hours. Sadly the wind was horrendous and there was no chance of flying her, I'd still be out there looking to recover her I should think lol. I got back home and was able to fly her locally but there's not much about and the wind was still too strong for her to properly fly at any
  20. Unless circumstances change I can't see me moving away from the Harris Hawk and I have so much more to achieve with the Harris yet but I'd like to see a goshawk in action as well as other birds of prey so I think next season I'll try and get out with someone who owns one. Nothing would stop us from flying a gos and then my Harris so it's not like mine would miss out on the days hunting.

Turn the volume off lol. I know what you mean it's annoying
  22. At least you got out, I travelled for an hour only to be met by very strong wind. I came home and went out locally but the wind was still pretty bad and anyway apart from a scrap with a squirrel in some ivy nothing much happened. The squirrel escaped lol. There's no chance of flying mine tomorrow we are getting rain and sleet all day. The weather is killing me, I need to find big woods to fly in to try and get out of the wind. The gos looks well.
