i got told that its to get the roots going because if you put them straight in the ground they pop themselves back out to the top of the soil and some think its birds pulling them out, so i'm sticking with the trays and they pop up in them, at least i can sort them out when they go in the ground Gets the onions off to a good start any way mine went straight in yesterday. Next year I will try some like yours. Been trying to do the maths now adays and figure how much I actually want of what.
