dogs-n-natives replied to tjones3862's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Fucks sake mate, bad news.. Im in the same boat here, having recently lost my main lurcher, Good luck for the future, I hope it doesnt give you too much time off! DnN -
Took it in her stride, and learned from it. Im happy enough, she is a versatile dog.

Bonny pup, I hope he does you proud

The main issue that Ive seen, is an increased chance of the dog overheating.

Cheers Roybo No, I didn't take old Bud this time, as he's terrible for 'pegging' game before it makes the gun line! But he has ventured out into Europe a few times previously with good results. He is getting on now, and suffers a bit with old leg injuries. As a paying rifle, it can run quite expensive, depending on what you shoot. As a beater, you get a small pay packet, just like here in the UK really. The cost was mainly diesel, as we drove out. All the best DnN

I also have a wirehair, and I agree... they can hunt. And are super tough. And I reckon using a deerhound or staghound sort or (or any proper good lucher sort) over a wirehair would be FAR better, than using a modern UK greyhound as the sighthound component. DnN

Thanks for the info Anna. Great pics

Sad Loss For Me... R.i.p 'pickle'
dogs-n-natives replied to dogs-n-natives's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I know what you mean, this is the third dog of mine to end their days following their keen instincts, and this one hit me the hardest, so Im far from de-sensitised to this. .. I still expect to hear her tail rattle off the cage door before letting her out...and that feeling of 'is this all worth it'... well, Ive pondered abit about this, and I reckon, yes, it was well worth it. My dogs are as mad for hunting as I am, my life revolves around THEM lol without the dogs I would be a fecking dull chap, at best. All the best, DnN -
I'm sorry to hear about your bitch pal, bet thats a right kicker. A dog around 24-25" sounds a good size to me, what crosses did you find that do the best up on that land ? I have heard a 1/2 x collie grey can be a bit picky and a 3/4 bred grey would be better, would this then make the dog not as tough and able to run that ground ? Sorry for the late responses, I dont get online much. To be honest, I can remember saying to various folk that were out with me, that I wished my blue bitch was a few inches taller! But then, would she have been AS good in the cover? The reason I think taller,

Seriously picked me up, has reading these comments. Thanks for taking the time to help out. Some fantastic advice there. And ULG cheers for the offer, seriously appreciated, but I must first have a good think about what it is I am after. -
Cheers for the choco bitch pictures Anna. Shes a bonny thing isnt she.

Thank you, Waz! Well, I have to admit, they were first class guests! Unlacedgecko was here for the 3rd time, he knows how things go. They were very effective in both the boar hunting and the digging. The president of the hunting club, who organized the driven hunt was very much satisfied from their work! Plus they are good and funny blokes and was nice to have them around. Unlacedgecko was more active in digging (understandably, he had 2 terriers with him, while DnN only brought a German Wirehaired), but DnN was laying almost as well on the shovels as a hungarian construction worker. (I

Thanks for the kind words.. its always good to hear as we live a pretty isolated life out here. I still feel sick to the core about loosing her, but the show must go on. DnN -
I always run mine in forestry and woodland. Lost my best bitch just last night, nothing to do with the trees though. Dont listen to anyone who says dont do it. Just bring the dogs up running that sort of land and you will be fine. Ive ran collie types, pointer blooded collie lurcher, bull cross, and deerhound cross all with perfect results. The deerhounds up here all run native woodland as well as open hill, and comercial forestry with no more than the usual issues that you face anywhere. Your dog could die on the easiest and flattest of fields, thats the nature of the game. But Id

Lost me best bitch last night. Gutted doesnt quite cut it. Those that knew her, or know me, will know that this will hurt my team badly. My lass was out with me too, shes a mess. The bitch died running game, broke her back in a nasty crash, I can only say that Im lucky that I had the means to give her a swift end. But it was brutal for such a nice, elegant, beautiful bitch,(though tough as boots) to end in such a way, though she died doing what she did best. And what she loved, and lived for. All the best for the rest of the season lads and lasses. Also, never count your chick

F of D Redneck... Yeah the visla cross did look a lot like a small doberman for sure. I'll see if I took one of the daughter. Cheers for the comments folks, I still need to work on my camera skills lol missed pretty much all the action. Sounds like you lads have a few about, if you ever fancy a few extra helpers, for 'flushing to the gun' etc... give us a call. DnN

Lunar's first solo boar 'find' happened to be a big tusker, that opened her shoulder up, and left a deep hole into the muscle, needing instant stitching She will generally hunt close in, within 100 yards, sometimes a bit more in woodland, but she 'checks in' regularly, and will go out to 2 km, when on the trail of game, I usually run her with a gps system. Im pleased with her general skills, bird work, retrieve, deer work, and also I hunt some rabbit and hare with her. I have a hope that with a bit more work, she will soon learn how to handle a nasty male boar. I was a bit gutted th

The red deer are bigger than the highland ones Im used too The hills are all managed hardwoods. For timber and driven shooting, it seems a good system, though very long-term turnover. Some areas of re-gen were very dense, you were crawling along boar tracks hoping not to have one heading your way haha

Teckel / Jagd terrier cross, perhaps... the owner wasnt too sure. I didnt see this one in action. Most of the terrier and teckel's were yappy, driving dogs. Hunting away not too far in front. Plenty of boar were put up and hunted a short way. They didnt stick to the boar for very long. ULgecko's 'Clyde'. Very keen dog, will turn a paw to most wildlife. At one point he hunted a herd of red hinds a kilometer back over. He was in the action as we caught a marten (as was the pointer and about 8 terriers lol)

Had a great time in Hungary recently, a few days digging, a few days driven hunting, in the beating line on the boar drives. Unlacedgecko, put together a great article about it if you want a more detailed read, but heres a few pics of some of the dogs that were out bushing boar to guns and baying up/catching any wounded. This is a Visla x Jagd terrier. Not pictured is a daughter out of this bitch, the sire was some street mongrel, but the younger one was a double of its mother, only in a chocolate brown instead of black. This bitch liked to bay a boar up, was short to medium range, and was

He stayed at home mate, he would have had a hell of a time with us, but he has 8 seasons under him now and to be honest, due to injury mainly, he is taking a back seat on most days out now. He still does a fair bit of driving cover for us. He also has a bitch or two that need his attention in the future, so he has a place by the fire for now lol DnN

Heres Guyla's Vizla x Jagd

The marten was bayed up under some roots for a bit, then decided bolting amongst about 12 dogs was the best course of action.... it didnt get too far.
