  1. Maybe consider a purpose bred staghound or bull/stag type, and if you can get the fox or yote to cross open land I would guess thats where they would score best
  2. trawling spinners/lures behind the boat for trout, salmon and sea trout works well..and you can kick back with a can at the same time... as for fly fishing, study what is being fed upon... i was cursing myself for having the wrong rod the other day at a hill loch I hiked out to., and should have had the fly rod as there was a hatch of caddis flies or similar and the trout were frenzied it would have been a fish per cast (for a good angler, not me) Last time I was there, it was late season, the water was colder and I had success with worm fished on the bottom, and without thinking I went prepa
  3. Within a 2 hour drive of mid Northumberland you can find many populations of the larger deer, and even get into muntjac territory, though they are turning up in the region as well. But I agree, its a poor show on deer, good job its lifting with roe, and what better species really? DnN
  4. There were reds and fallow but they long gone, not due to habitat faults in fact Northumbarland is the second most Bio-diverse county of Britain, after Dorset, apparently, but the region was always a poaching and general lawless area since the romans left lol But mate, you dont have to go too far to get some stalking on the bigger 3.. and there are small pockets of fallow and even the odd isolated red or two, but really thin on ground and they never get given chance to spread. DnN
  5. No flea treatment needed, and wormer only needed prior to returning. We will all be visiting a vet while away, to administer wormer and stamp passport, this can be done any time between 1 and 5 days prior to returning.... folk can stop at any vet on the way down and get the wormer/passport sorted before the hunting even starts DnN From bitter experience I suggest all get their dogs' microchipped 21 days before the trip as well. Or get existing chips checked prior to travel?

  7. Hunting wooded hill ground, you might be best with a couple of foxhounds.
  8. Cheers buddy, Also, you guys that are thinking of putting in an order might want to call Charles from Aus, his gear is very well made..... Let me know and I can give him a buzz, as I got an international free calls deal thingy... just get me the number of dogs that need plates and Il ask if he can sort us out. Then we can get back to him with the dogs measurements. check out his gear though its tough and folk seem to love putting their dogs in it. https://www.(!64.56:886/pages/Grunter-Plates DnN
  9. Heres some more Ive found, they look very nice. http://www.hundeschutzjacke.de/produkte/hundeschutzjacken/ http://www.laufender-keiler.de/index_2.htm Good hunting DnN
  10. Cheers for the input Jach Could you put up any links to websites, for the vests? As far as I know, there is only UG bringing terriers and they are experienced in this sort of thing. The rest of the bushing dogs, I presume are trusted not to go to ground. Good Hunting DnN
  11. If theres anyone else who want to try their big dogs, let me know
  12. Aye, we are looking into that, cheers for mentioning it though... yes it would be great to cut the driving down!
  13. A german company makes these full suit kevlar vests.... i hear they are superb protection, and last years... but they look like the dog may get hot easy.... might try one on one of my terriers this season, though in general terriers and small dogs should be ok, its the bigger dogs that get bad cuts usually. http://www.jagdwelt24.com/alles-fur-den-hund/hundeweste-kevlar-hubertus.html DnN
  14. Yeah the passport is easy, costs about 60 quid.... you go in and get chip/rabies jab... 3 weeks later get passport and your away... thats it. While away, we are all visiting a pre arranged vet in Spain and getting wormers and their passports signed//dated... then thats all needed to re-enter the UK. Travel through the tunnel is easiest with dogs, very good service and sympathetic to the worker. Ive also been on the ferry and it was fine, just takes longer. I will drop you a PM with some info, would be good to see some of the larger breeds out there. All dogs must be so
  15. I doubt the binding on the trap is laced with poison, normally a good trapper avoids using poisons anyway.... my guess is that it is to keep from severely injuring a leg caught animal like fox etc
  16. I'm not sure yet. I'm putting together the travel plans and will come up with a rough budget. At the minute, the plan is to get the ferry from southern England to Spain direct. I'll post my news on this thread. Cheers UG, will be interesting to hear about the direct ferry
  17. Ok, firstly, theres no panic, Im visiting the landowner to get final details and have a look around... July/August. Dog passports...cost at my local vet is about 60 quid. And takes about 3 weeks to complete after the initial rabies jab/microchip. Might be worth checking at your vets in the mean time... another thing to look into, is cut vests or collars for your dogs if you think they might need it, or just for peace of mind...there are a couple of European companies that make them, but they are like full suit tyoe things, and I reckon overheating would be a real issue. I get mine from
  18. Lol yes, but word of advice dont 'book' this kind of holiday in North America/Canada, you can buy visitor hunting tickets from most local wal-marts etc and crack on... millions of hectares of crown land to hunt over Yeah but surely you need some sort of guide initially? Without that you're a bit fecked. I wouldn't have a clue what I'm doing... One day though, I'd love to hunt in North America. For some Africa is the ultimate but for me N.America has the greatest appeal. Not for me, hunting guides etc... my lass and my dogs are my guides! Ive got two more trips to Canada this year
  19. Thanks for the help mate, should work out a cheap hunting holiday for folk if we get a few names down
  20. Just to add some details. We have decided no guns will be present, as the days are focused on the dogs. The days will be run like training days, and would suit folk who would like to get their hunting dogs out onto some superb rough country. Dogs that like to range out and find stuff are great in the beating line, dogs with voice are very useful, and some with colder noses will help. There would be chances to see lots of wildlife as you and your dogs bush through the scrub, or maybe as you wait quietly ahead with a dog by your side, listening for the bushing dogs to open up and hea
