If you reccy'd the field beforehand and they were hitting it sounds like you started too late and finished too early, usually with winter rape be set up and ready before dawn, shoot till they dry up ( if they oblige) leave the hide there if you can, go to the pub till an hour and a half before dusk, go back to the set up for the possible night feed. Pigeon can bulk up real quickly on rape so unusual for them to be on rape for long periods or all day apart from odd straglers. Thats what us Essex guys do , the pubs always warm

New Pro Attract Pigeon Decoy's
Denny essex replied to bbjaccov5's topic in Pigeon Shooting & Decoying
They do look good , all heads down as feeding. Not seen or handled any for real yet. The heads on FUD's can be altered for heads up/heads down which I like , not sure about the rivets in them but they seem to stay on. Mine do work well with a few dippas operating them, will have to get some of the pros and try them . -
New Pro Attract Pigeon Decoy's
Denny essex replied to bbjaccov5's topic in Pigeon Shooting & Decoying
Only the movement was a bit disappointing. They move a little bit but not as much as i would like. But again they do the job! Gr Jacco Use a lighter spring on the peg if they are spring pegs, maybe able to adjust them by twisting the peg sections further apart or stretch the spring slightly, failing that decoy dippas for artificial aid . FUDs are much the same but with half a battleship of steel as a peg, no movement, peg is virtualy useless in hard ground, cut all mine off and adapted spring pegs for use with dippas and made thin wire bouncer pegs that the FUDS swing with t -
For falling shot the advised distance is 300 yards, gun shot noise can also be an issue more so when the wind blows towards the houses.

This time of year on stubble as long as the birds are hitting it 6 or less decoys , respectable coloured clothing, face mask , gun n cartridges, secateurs, sack for birds. Secateurs are to to trim vegetation for a hide (if allowed) and you are not able to get tucked away respectably in a ditch hedge etc and the birds are a little spooky. If a flight line is strong enough then gun and cartridges and tuck in.

Ghost net need a good backdrop to work efficiently.

Nice one

As above but also sounds like you are aiming the gun, you aim a rifle you point a shotgun with your eyes on the bird. Anticipating lead on the bird , range and speed takes practise and as mentioned gun mount and fit play an important part. A trip to a local clay ground and a little tuition could help a lot.

Never found it necessary to use a two hide tactic, if the flight line is strong enough and you keep out of sight there should be no problem, allowing for the immediate dispatch of any pricked birds or upside down ones in the pattern. shooting a regular flight line from or to a roost wood frequently will often put birds off. Rape shooting in winter you may find yourself chasing birds around as often one or two shots will move them to else where.

Flock decoys work as stated above, cant say they pull pigeon any better than others on the right day, some days no type or style of artificial decoy will work. As for wood painted , decoys have been made from plastic drink bottles, plastic pipe, solid carved wood all seem to have worked on the right day, but real birds are the best if you have them. As for quantity, 10 to 12 for starters , sometimes more in the winter than summer. Study your shoot and see where the birds flightlines are or their preferd feeding area , sitty trees, wind direction etc will point you to where to set up. A rot

A box and a push on and push off switch plus lead from maplins will do the job.

Manual flapper conversion to electric
Denny essex replied to Denny essex's topic in Pigeon Shooting & Decoying
Thanks, sold it for £15 inc postage -
As the title , a manual artificial flapper that I never used but bought as a project fitted with a 12 volt electric conversion ( the 2 batteries in the video are each 6 volt the 12 volt was flat ) Not quite as fast as I would like but dont think operateing it manualy could be much faster in my opinion, (I have used one manualy in the past and can think of better things to pull on than a cord) Because of the flappers weight and style I think running fast would be a problem due to wing weight and fixing securly. I doubt I will ever use it so it may be sold on when ive finished my experim

Tips and help for beginners
Denny essex replied to harrycatcat's topic in Pigeon Shooting & Decoying
Not sure if I have missed your message and did not send a copy of the pigeon paper , if so sorry and one on its way. Denny -
Ive used hypaflaps fore about 5 years and they do work well, they add a little extra movement that real birds dont , but certain days real birds have to be the deal. One problem with hypaflaps is they do not work too well in heavyish winds, the wings fold over and if you try to match the wind speed with the magnet to stop the fold over the rotary can begin to look like a helicopter and does not do the bird pulling job at that speed.

Cheapest one I know is a bamboo stick or similar roughly 2 mtrs long, strong enough to take a bird and still flex, a wire coat hanger or soft wire straightend and curled a few times in the middle of the wire around the bamboo stick and bound with tape or similar to hold it steady about 20 cm from the top. each end of the wire is bent to either pierce through a bird wing or curled to grip a birds out stretched wing and hold it steady. The bamboo stick is stuck firm in the ground, the other end with the wing spreaders goes up a birds rear to the head to hold firm, then the wing arms fitted to

Dont mix them with pigeon decoys , if your useing both pigeon and crow decs have the crows at least 10 mtrs away from the pigeon

Separated from the pigeon pattern by a few mtrs, up to 10 mtrs is not too far but think about the way birds are going to come to both patterns and are within you kill zone. -
I would say 31 ground - negative and 53 + positive.

You do need to check on a wireing diagram for that wiper motor to get the colour identities of the wires so you are not just wireing on trial and error. Short of stripping down the motor to identifiy its wireing configuration. But on most 5 wire wiper motors 2 are usualy for the auto wiper rest switch, one wire is ground the other 2 are normaly full speed wiper and slower speed. If you work on trial and error I would use just the battery to test without speed controler and keep a supply of fuses handy.

Pigeon Hypa Flap Sillosock decoys ???
Denny essex replied to mjr88's topic in Pigeon Shooting & Decoying
Ive been useing the same pair of hypa flaps for nearly 5 years and have made a lightweight magnet just for hypas. Like anything else in decoying they work on the right day , ive had birds bomb them and shy away from them, the pellet holes in the hypas can vouch for how close some birds have come to them. They can be pretty vunerable for transporting and as many will say real is the better deal and cant dissagree with that, but I will get another pair when I pension the others off.
