  1. I believe it'll be a 1 in 9 twist. Probably a little fast to properly stabilise a 35gr but if you have the opportunity to try some, not too much lost
  2. Do you know the twist rate of the barrel on your .223 Slips? Generally slower, like 1 in 12 etc is better for lighter long bullets.
  3. Or maybe he should have got an Hornet………..did you get your Hornet or did you settle for the .338 Lapua? He thought about the .338 but found it not enough gun for them scary Welsh hills....so opted for the .458 Winchester in the end Ought to just take out a Welsh fox humanely Just.
  4. It'll be interesting to see how it all pans out. The EU Treaties, laws and policies still apply to us until our membership ceases so if they bring these new regulations in, then we might just choose to ignore them, like we did with their attempts to change us from inches, feet and miles. They eventually officially gave up trying to change us on those... I think any new EU legislation will be effectively null and void in it's application to Britain from now on. If anything, we'll be setting the wheels in motion to repeal much of it.
  5. I like the .410 I always feel nostalgic when I bag something with one
  6. As Walshie says, any expanding heads count towards your "possessed rounds" total, Personally, I can't see much of an issue with you priming the cases as well, no offence of having primed cases for different calibres in your possession. Legally, you could measure and add the powder to them as well but from a safety perspective, to my mind it's better to put the powder in as you're loading. If the rounds were non-expanding, they only become S.1 ammunition when the round has all it's component parts, case, primer, powder and head.
  7. As I was reading your post, I could hear that can of worms being flung right open!
  8. Nothing like the smell of sulphur in the morning, or any time of day I shoot BP out of my old hammer gun a few times a year, usually turns a few heads.
  9. Hungerford The Deer Act and the prohibition on non-expanding was 1991 1996/7 for expanding ammo restrictions.Think it was the late sixties for the deer act and hingerford resulted in auto rifles and slide actions being banned except 22 rimfires. Also certain shotgun restrictions. Hungerford involved a auto rifle using fmj ammo! Dumblane involved expanding ammunition in the crime. U. I stand corrected, wires were crossed. You're right, it was the Firearms Amendment Act 1997 for expanding ammunition/missiles. The original Deer Act from 1963 was repealed by the

  11. I dare say a shot to the brain with a FMJ round is almost certainly going to kill it. As for anywhere else on the body, it becomes less likely for a clean kill. However, a good destructive heart shot is likely to have the same effect. The massive hydrostatic shock caused by expanding rounds, particularly ballistic tips, is what we've all become used to. The 5.56 NATO round is renowned as a "bone breaker" but not as an instantly fatal round and it's a .22 centrefire, like the .22-250. Deer are the only animals in the UK that expanding ammunition must be used on. Basically, they bann
  12. I had much the same this time, they didn't come for renewal, but when I moved they came to check the new arrangements about a month later, seems pretty sensible as long as they've got no concerns about you.
  13. Thing is with semi autos, they have very long actions, so a 30" barrel has the effect of being a 34" barrel on a normal gun. Perhaps you could try and find a synthetic stocked auto with a 26" barrel as suggested, this should keep weight and length to a minimum. What quarry are you shooting with your current gun? A small bore may not be best suited to some things, the foreshore and foxes being two that I can think of. Alternatively, what about something like the Beretta Ultralight or similar? They weigh in at a shade under 6lbs which is lighter than most side by sides and certainl
  14. The only two plants capable of manufacturing HMR ammunition, Winchester and CCI, don't make a subsonic HMR round. So unless he's manually unseating the bullet and removing some of the powder...it sounds far fetched to me.
  15. I'd normally agree that nothing much will want to feed on a dead fox... But over the last few weeks I've shot two in the same field and put them in the same hideaway, both were eaten away within days by something. Down to bones and fur left. Strange. As for leaving them, I usually tuck them away in the nearest hedge or ditch out of the way of passers by and more importantly they're not going through the mower when it comes to silage!
  16. Common Land is still owned by someone, so if you wanted to try and make things a bit easier you could always seek permission from whoever owns it to simply cross from one piece of permission to the other. The Crown Foreshore is operated on a similar system whereby members of wildfowling clubs where there is an agreement between the members and the Crown that no one will be prosecuted for armed trespass, providing they are still a member which allows them to cross below the Crown owned high water mark and ultimately shoot. You can still carry a loaded firearm in a place where the publ
  17. The Hornet is almost certainly going to be quieter than a moderated .222/.223 with a any decent moderator on it. You may gain a few more decibels reduction from having say a T8 over a T4 but you're always going to have that supersonic crack to contend with. The Hornet by nature, with it's much less powder, is a quiet centrefire.
  18. There's no minimum time before he can appeal, but the chances of an appeal being granted would, in my view, increase with more time spent with a clean record. Three years is quite a long time for that sort of offence these days, so it must have been pretty serious. This will obviously be a deciding factor as well. The only other option I guess would be to appeal the conviction and/or sentence.
  19. I'd definitely be thinking a 4 baffle mod rather than an 8, it's added weight and length for no benefit. ASE Compact series I've seen used to good effect
  20. Rang them and they said put all you can remember lol They cashed the cheque this week so looking good I took a copy of this application to keep in my gun cabinet. Cheers, D. Hopefully it'll be guns you'll be keeping in the cabinet before long In there already, its a renewal. Cheers, D. Ah! In that case, more guns

  22. For the sake of the £35 a SAK costs, I just shoot it and don't bother cleaning it at all. I'm on my second now I think, the other had a small rust hole in it after tens of thousands of HMR and .22LR rounds over about 6 years.
  23. Jok, I don't think anyone is debating that the law does not specify that a cabinet is a legal requirement. It is the practicalities of not having one or a similar level of security that will satisfy the licensing manager that you can safely store your guns. Whether you're deliberately trying to be the Devil's advocate Jok, I don't know but the police do not have to grant the certificate if the security is not satisfactory, in fact, they are duty bound not to grant it on public safety grounds. If it is of an acceptable standard, then you are correct in that it must be granted, howev
  24. Unfortunately, the law is incredibly subjective when it comes to firearms. Their security is perhaps the second biggest consideration, after the applicant is deemed seemingly fit to have one in the first place. If the firearms licensing manager, who ultimately represents the Chief Officer of police is not satisfied with your security, then obviously a certificate won't be granted. It may be the case that they will refuse to grant or renew a certificate with multiple firearms where a cabinet is not present because they deem a gun cable or clamp as inadequate. But security is made up o
