  1. i regularly watch woodcock roding at dusk with a friend and he brings along his rather flash camera. he has it set so that he can just click photos off in very quick succession. i take my lightforce lamp with me to give the bird a bit of distinction but we cannot seem to get any clear pictures and sometimes nothing at all even though these birds are really close, 10ft above your head sometimes. does anyone have any tips? thanks ss06
  2. Thanks guys was a good day out nice and cold so they were all still sleepin when we got there. thanks again ss06
  3. no is the short answer, but god knows why youd want to, from reports of people who shot them long ago they are almost inedible and smell like fish. on the other hand there are lots of them round this way, around 20 nest in rabbit holes on the shoot each year. thanks ss06
  4. I always enjoy this time of year, unlike many others who are reeling from the end of the game season but being a keeper i dont shoot all that much game anyway.this time of year is for catching up on the vermin who are preceeding to eat all the wheat from the feeders on the ground. even though i have shot 124 squirrels since last may just wandering around, they are an ever increasing problem especially with the mild weather. so today enough was enough, time to trim them a little. i got together with two friends rising early and out by 7.30, to blow some grey dreys from here to the next county
  5. thanks for that gents.as i said it seemed to be satisfied but you never know sort of situation. i hope it all goes through ok thanks ss06
  6. The feo came out today for a friendly chat,i know him fairly well having shot with him for years, so started off on a good note. made him tea etc. this must be the only FEO i know of that has any real and lasting knowledge of firearms and their effects. we talked for a while on different things to do with rifle shooting, he has 50 odd of them! and then returning to the boring business of administration. he noted that i sent a letter from my beat keeper and myself explaining my rifle shooting experience having used a .222 with him for a few years. he asked me to clarify who the man(beat ke
  7. sorry to contradict you just seemed a bit strange! north yorks police sound like they know as little about firearms as the League against cruel sports. i think you ought to donate a bunny to him shot with a .223 see how much good meat he gets off it. might prove a point thanks ss06
  8. peashooter, are you getting the HMR confused with the .17 Rem Mag. i would be surprised if they didnt give you a hmr, a .223 really is big for anything normally associated with a rimfire. thanks ss06
  9. if you live fairly close have u popped into litts or keens for a browse? im in swansea nd takes a while to get to litts. ss06
  10. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, weve got a cz 222.iv cut it down to 18inches and screw cut it....we use federal primers 205......26 grains of 2230 accurate powder and 40 grain honarday v max tips....it groups well shoots out to 250 yards ok....smashes reds...will be trying vit 120 next because should get more fps but havnt played with the vit powder yet...i know a gun smith that will load develop your rifle give you 5 or 6 loads and all the targets charts etc etc for £160....he makes me look like a blundering idiot...we were using hodgdon
  11. slightly off topic Woz, do you have any good fox reloading recipes for .222. i know the basics of reloading having reloaded non toxic and 3 1/2" fox loads in shotguns for a few years and only keep keep alliant and hodgdon slow powders so i will need a new stock of powders, primers etc. what do you recommend? i will hopefullt be getting a CZ 527 varmint. thanks ss06
  12. having not used a hornet i cannot comment but they seem to be regarded on this site as a quiet shortish range fox gun so i would have thought it would work on crows just as well at a decent distance. i have a fair amount of experience with a .222 as i have used them for fox and crow with a beat keeper. they will drop foxes at 250 yards at the edge of humane dispatch and will drop crows at 300 if you can hit them, i can now and again! the .222 was designed and used very extensively and effectively as a benchrest competiton cartridge and has a reputation of being extremely accurate with the
  13. A real sailors warning morning! (and crows) was out my self this morning myself about 6ish and waited till about 7 when charlie popped out of a hedge about 25 yrds away. he received 555 grain of AAA. talk about a bully thanks ss06
  14. Thanks for clearing things up Deker. i can see exactly where your coming from and it seems downright daft that something such as administration could not be done the same over the different forces in this country when everything ought to be the same anyway. thanks again ss06
  15. Deker, if they do put a condition on his licence surely he can appeal against it using BASC or SACS as it is a little unfair. i had my first sgc when i was just over 15 and did not have this condition and neither did friends of mine. did you hear about the ACPO's advice recently publsihed for guidance to the police on putting conditions on certificates, im not sure whether this was purely FAC but it said that the conditions put on in one part of the country should be no different to any other and vice versa. please do correct me if im barking up the wrong tree! thanks ss06
  16. it is a strange situation when an officer in charge of ensuring the suitability of a candidate for shotguns gives the wrong advice. to quote from the Met Police firearms page.Possess a shotgun if covered and secured from the age of 15 years this means you can use the gun unaccompanied, the only thing you cannot do is buy guns and cartridges. and i also quote from the BASC website. After reaching the age of 15 a person may use a shotgun without supervision, providing he/she holds a valid shotgun certificate. this is the correct advice and has always been so, i dont know if the FEO you saw is n
  17. im not sure about the Irish general licenses but they were removed from english licenses in 2005 but can still be shot in Wales and Scotland if you have a good reason, such as public health etc i have never shot one always seems a shame to do so but i was assured by an italian who lives here in wales that they go very well with a bolognese sauce! thanks ss06
  18. what do you think of this range of scopes for use on a centrefire for foxing? are they any good or anything else youd care to share about them? thanks ss06
  19. from what i can find out from googling it it seems its a mauser type bolt action imported from and manufactured by CZ in the Czech Republic or Czechoslovakia as it was then between 1975 and 1988 with the .223 being one of the last calibres to be added so think around early 's. as for the trigger i always prefer to have a gunsmith alter anything mechanical on a gun. i have had shotgun triggers done for competition in the past and it doesnt cost a great deal. and you know what your getting and can specify a weight such as 3lb or sumthing, just to your taste. hope this has filled in a bit ss06
  20. thanks guys they banned it from being used on anything entering the food chain so turkey farmers were affected too, it used to come in their feed mix but has been removed. i believe the only thing which it can now be used for is pigeons not for consumption e.g racers. it was top stuff and certainly improved the rearing process and yet they banned it in the EU but apparently the americans dont think its that much of a risk to ban it and still use it so it cant be all that dangerous. some people i have spoken to use herbal remedies and all sorts whether they work or not i dont know. thanks
  21. a mate has one on his remmy mod 7 in 22-250. he didnt like at first but got used to it and now uses it all the time. with the mod 7 being a light rifle anyway it feels like your holding a normal weight rifle maybe slightly heavy. the battery typically lasts something like 45 mins non stop or all night if its on/off all the time. he has a red filter with it which he uses alternately. he hasnt had any probs with it. saved his rifle once when it slipped from hand and he caught the lead lucky eh. hope it gives you an idea. ss06
  22. if i were you i would look towards the lincoln and lanber collections. these are very solid guns and if you enjoy rough shooting you wont be worrying as if you were carrying a purdey! also it is a good idea to look at second hand guns at your gunshop. if you like one and it fits you then your sorted. good luck bound to find something you like ss06
  23. I realise this is a very old issue by now but i remember using emtryl and was wandering if anyone has any alternatives they have come across or any other item that has a positive effect on rearing. hopefully there is some expert knowledge in this section who have thier own recipes for success. thanks ss06
  24. Lightforce 170 everytime, gives you and excellent beam and clarity out way past 200 yards, rabbits at 250 look as if theyre standing next to you. plus its light, originally designed for kangaroo shooters in oz but cant imagine you have many round your way. ss06
  25. i have no experience of the police forces in scotland. my father was refused an sgc and when in i applied i put his address down as where the guns would be stored and as my home address(my mother wouldnt let me keep them with her) and all i had to prove was that i had sole access to them. this is what they should do by law! so bending the law as you seem to be implying is simply wrong. e.g. if they have a reason ro believe you are only applying for a cert to let your father have guns then that would come under you not having a good reason, but if they come to the conclusion that you have a
