I wouldnt be too sure on that one, a centrefire for fox is a centrefire for fox in most licensing depts eyes. If it were a .243 or a .222, if you havnt used a centrefire before then they may still insist on mentoring. However, seen as youve shot a rimfire for a good few years with no problems then they could let you have one without supervision, the best thing to do is ring your dept and see what they say, most are quite helpful it seems, they are there to give advice on these matters, and if they say you have to shoot with a mentor then just, go and Zero it with your mentor and have a few c

My headkeeper and myself are showing an FEO around our shoot ground tomorrow to re-assess its suitability for firearms. The land was checked in the same way in 2001, in 2005 for an FAC and last month for my FAC. Now, the topography of the ground doesnt change, it has been recently passed so what is the point of this guy coming out and is this normal practise, or have my licensing department got too much time on their hands. It seems they want to check the land every few years. Why on earth are they wasting my, and my headkeepers time, I could be doing something constructive like cutting bra

Despite it's name, the Moscovey duck is not from Moscow, it's an American cross-breed and the Gressingham was originallya cross between a wild mallard and a domestic duck. (My neighbour keeps both and they're all bloody tasty!) Yeah, i had fun trying to catch the one i ate without having a duck beak shaped hole in my hands and legs. Next time i think ill shoot the damn thing. .410's are a very valuable tool. Nice to know where the different breeds come from, the nastiest animal i have ever come across in the UK was a goose that had to be seperated from the rest of the flock, every time

Has anyone on here eaten one, they are delicious and the best duck ive ever eaten, i think they are disguised as Gressingham or something. If you get a chance try one you wont be disappointed, am thinking of getting a few to fatten for Christman later on in the summer. Thanks ss06

Last year it was the 21st of April i saw the first swallow, here on the Gower. It keeps getting earlier each year. And things go back later too. I am still seeing woodcock flighting at dusk, must be late coming back from Ireland. I imagine i will see a swalloq in the next fortnight or so. ss06

CHEERS MATE, i will take your advice before i sight on a deer!! i am from rhymney vally--- post code gwent.. Thanks Plenty of deer up there! Just been talking to a friend whos been culling in Margam Park, Port Talbot, shot plenty of deer but keeps finding carcases of poached deer shot with 22 rimfires and hunted with long dogs. Pain in the arse they are. They kill the deer and just chop off the bits they want, he found one with no back legs today. Such a waste. Anyway, good luck with learning the art of stalking. ss06

This is great for using up the leftovers from a roast, it can be venison, lamb, beef or pork either way it is delicious and fairly quick, the idea behind it as the name suggests is to hunt for the meat as with leftovers there is not usually a lot of it, it doesnt seem to work as well if you fill it with meat.Anyway, here's the recipe; Ingredients; 1.Whatever cooked meat you have left over. 2.Plenty of thinly sliced potatoes about two per person/serving. 3.Thinly sliced onions about 1/4 per person/serving. 4.Meat stock, about 1 pint for four servings or enough to just cover the filling.

No probs, but you just need to find out who owns the sporting rights, and once you know then just ask whoever is concerned. Which part of S.Wales are you then? In West Glam ss06

loading equipment wanted
SportingShooter replied to luckyjohn's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
Same question really, i am thinking of starting loading 222 and am shopping around. Anyone recommend any other good websites? Not looking for fancy press or anything, got scales so need a press, dies, brass and bullets. -
It does seem strange that it needs replacing after a seasons use. Personally i run a , 14 amp 12v with a 75w bulb in my lightforce 170 which ive had for a few years now, lasts for about 75 mins if its left on constantly. but all night if its flicked on and off. Regards

Ok, The tenant farmer may or may not hold the shooting rights over the land he farms, this may have been reserved by the landowner. This means that if he doesnt own the shooting rights and you have been shooting there you dont actually have permission either and you or your friend cant shoot the deer. If his tenancy agreement says he owns the sporting rights then you are in the clear and if your friend has the legal calibre/condition on his FAC then he can shoot the deer there as long as the tenant says so. Written permission would be a good thing but it is not essential. Also, if your fri

Silly week's gun buying
SportingShooter replied to Mr_Logic's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Ive just bought one myself in 17HMR and the trigger is crap really, i have adjusted it to what i deem to be as slim as possible without being dangerous but the travel is still too much, but its better. I have heard that a good trigger kit will sort this, but as you say you dont want to change it yet. I am in the same boat though as i had my FAC a few weeks back and had to go and buy them in the same week, its like a compassion to spend too much money, but i dont care, as soon as i shot the first fox with the .222 and rabbit with the HMR my wallet relaxed a bit now i know they work. Thanks -
how many of you homeload ?
SportingShooter replied to jamie g's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I load for a 12b, non toxic stuff for ducks and geese using very high velocity steel. some of the 3 1/2" goose loads are travelling at just over 1700 fps which is incredibly fast for a 12 b. It is easy once you have all the components but startup costs are high and there is not a great deal of choice for shotgun reloading in the UK. Metallic reloading is far easier. I have also began to load a few bismuth shells for my 8bore,which i have had for a few months now, as i now have cases, wads, and black powder, after the rigmarole of getting an explosives license. I use the Lee Load all II for -
Killing with a 12ft/lbs gun from 250 metres......
SportingShooter replied to cornishhunter's topic in Airgun Hunting
He could be shooting at 350 inches about 9 yards, certainly possible, I love the way that as soon as some people are proved wrong they get very edgy and defensive to try to hide their inadequacies and go on and on about loyalty to friends and the rest of it etc etc. Id never sell a gun to someone as stupid as that. id love to see his application form for an FAC, something along the lines of a .22r/f for shooting red deer at 1500yrds. thanks ss06 -
Twist rate of CZ .222
SportingShooter replied to SportingShooter's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
If i were shooting huge amounts then i would go with cheaper ones, but i think last year i shot about 40 so i mite 'bite the bullet' and go for the more expensive ones if they group well in the rifle. But if i like the others then why change. I know the .222 is a former benchrest cartridge so are 1/2" groups fairly easily achievable with a good homeload. -
Sod the dog, i wander if the owner is free to good home. No wander she needed such a big dog to keep her safe.

Twist rate of CZ .222
SportingShooter replied to SportingShooter's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Thanks again SS i have shot a few foxes now with the remmy 50gr accutip boat tails and they seems to blow foxy around the field and they travel about 3140 i think. Its all about seeing what suits the rifle really aint it so will just have to fire plenty of rounds, theres a shame! Would like to try the 40gr v max and a few of the heavier ones, but as you say the 60 gr going at 3000+ is a little hot for the little .222 I watched some videos of the varmint grenades from Barnes yesterday, they seem as if they are a safe round with plenty of explosiveness in them, will no doubt try a few of th -
Twist rate of CZ .222
SportingShooter replied to SportingShooter's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Thanks Snap Shot, Now i suppose the question is what is the highest grain a 1 in 14 twist will stabilise. Also, jamie i went in to litts with the intention of buying something completely different, and ended up walking out with a scope, but i couldnt get over the clarity of it, was looking in the shop, which is fairly dark and gloomy and i could easily see cobwebbs on the wall at the other end in a dark corner amazing. I had a good deal with them too, uttings listed them as £920 and i had it and a pair of leupold 30mm mounts for £850. still a huge amount to spend on a tube of glass but t -
Twist rate of CZ .222
SportingShooter replied to SportingShooter's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Thanks jamie, I have only had the gun for a few weeks and even with factory remmy 50gr accutips it is grouping under and inch. i bought a scope the other day, the new swarovski Z6 1.7-24x42. this should give me a good set up and so im looking forward to getting a lot more practise in. i will pst what i discover on here. thanks -
I read some of the posts on the daily mail website and the majority are from sympathetic townies who know sod all about foxes. they are all 'oh im glad she spared him'. The cabinet would have been open, the gun loaded and the shot fired before he or i knew it. ss06

Does anyone know what the twist rate is in these guns, i intend to start to reload metallic cartridges soon and would like to know what weight bullets my gun will stabilise. Thanks ss06

shooting rabbits from a helicoptor
SportingShooter replied to Disco's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I have a book full of shooting stories and there is a story about shooting ducks from a helicopter during the Korean War, he couldnt hit them though, I think youd have to have heat seeking bullets to shoot bunnies from a helicopter. Thanks ss06 -
how many of you homeload ?
SportingShooter replied to jamie g's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I put 'factory ammo as i cant be bothered to homeload' but am into shotgun reloading for ducks and geese non toxic etc, and have just had a .222 so am looking to get started soon i hope. I have just been watching some videos of Barnes Varmint Grenades on youtube, talk about explosive, mite try some of them now. thanks ss06 -
I wouldnt let to try that with a .22 r/f, bullets pinging all over the place, i spose thats the beauty of the air rifle. Thanks ss06
