I dont own one but i have used one a fair bit, they are great on crows and magpies, shot a rat with one once, and even the odd fox as long as the range is sensible, i have found them accurate and the ammo isnt as much as HMR. I think in comparison they are similar to the HMR the plus point being the heavier bullet weight. I also believe they are more widely accepted on the target range than a HMR. Hope this helps ss06

Interesting one, i have heard a story of a chicken, not quite the same but, in the US which survived having its head chopped off as a tiny amount of brain matter had survived allowing it to survive for years after apparently, i think i should stop watching QI, seems i have an answer for everything today. Thanks ss06

Totally agree apart from no.9, the worst thing possible we could do now is pull out of Iraq, that is unless you fancy more terrorism attacks on this country as Iraq is where they will stronghold.

Pheasant Chicks

I filled the majority of my feeders today to the brim so they should be ok for a while seen as its only the birds that got away that are left! I certainly hope we have some wild broods and birds as they are normally the first birds shot at the tail end of october. Thanks again ss06 -
Pheasant Chicks

Thats what i thought ours would be upto about now, i will have to keep my eye out for more. i hope they arent all gonna hatch soon as if it gets any colder i doubt some of them will survive. regards ss06 -
We have got some beautiful scenery in this country havnt we, did you hear or see Daffydd Iwan perfoming at Ray Gravell's funeral in stradey park? Regards ss06

that looks a lot like a load of permission i have got, flat as a pancake, i didnt put it down on my application, but when i had my cert i phoned the licensing dept to check if the land was suitable for .222 and HMR , it was so happy days, this seems strange how it was refused as it looks like a real nice piece of ground, lovely and wide open for rabbits and foxes with a rifle. Regards ss06

Since last may on the 120 acres of my shoot(1200 all in all) that i am responsible for i have accounted for 158 squirrel purely by shooting whilst walking around with my gun as well as shooting out dreys, goodness knows how many i have killed in dreys in addition to this figure. They are top of my priority list along with the magpie, i cant stand the sight of either of them, last summer i saw one run in front of me and climb a tree, i couldnt see it at first so i waited for half an hour just to get one more, its addictive once you start. Thanks ss06

that seems starnge. what sort of land is it and how large is it. if its pasture land and % of the time isnt underwater i cant see why unless it has a lot of habitation. the land will obviously be very flat but as long as youre above the target then whats the problem. i may be barking up the wrong tree here, the land would be perfectly accpetable for someone with an open cert to shoot on. Others on here will have a lot more experience of FEO and land than me. Thanks ss06

I posted this in the general talk but had little response so here goes. I had a walk around the shoot today with the gun looking for vermin and had shot a few things when i noticed something moving in the middle of a double hedge. i went to have a look and when i was about 10 yrds away, i was stunned to see, a hen followed by three chicks of about two weeks. this means the hen and cock must have paired up mated and the hen laid the eggs by mid february. does anyone else find this very early or are pheasants reading up on global warming. Thanks ss06

Not really other than to say three young uns is a low count. Not really surprised its low though, it is only the end of march after all. i wouldnt expect to see chicks until early may normally and thats early. i doubt the ones i saw today will survive if it gets much colder or perhaps charlie will nab them. Thanks ss06

Anyone else think this strange or seen anything similar?

I use federal premium v shok 17g. They group very tight and do the business on rabbits, pigeons and crows. Took a pigeon at 305yards, can'nt ask for any better than that! 305 yrds!!, thats a hell of a shot with a hmr, works out at about 32" drop with a 100 yrd zero. good going fella. furthest with mine so far(only had it a few days) is 120yrds and i though that was miles. regards ss06

I was having a walk around the shoot earlier with the gun and i had shot a few things, when i noticed something sneaking through a holly bush on one of the hedges ,i could hear some sort of calling, so i went and had a look, as i got within about 10 yrds there was a Hen pheasant walking up the inside of the hedge followed by three young uns , they cant have been more than about two weeks old.The pair of pheasants must have been paired up and the hen laid the eggs by mid february. Is this an early record or has global warming gone mad. ss06 P.s as i saw them i remembered the old adage no ca

old holland and holland cartridges
SportingShooter replied to mjt's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
A steel lined paper case, fairly old bit of kit you have there, they were made obviously when paper was dominant but improvements were being made all the time, the steel lining is for strength mainly and to try to stop the shell warping or distorting. Eley/Nobel either loaded the entire catridge for Holland or they capped them off. Your best bet is to find out when they were in 98 new bond street, and this will give you an approximate date regards ss06 -
I couldnt find a poll on this using the search so i was interested to know what you all prefer. Its mulitple choice so pick your three favourites. Thanks ss06

The most ive ever had out of one here is 4, the drey looked like Blenheim Palace, it was massive, two of us fired together and it all came crashing down and we picked up the four. I would say the most common is two around here, 6!, it must have been the squirrel equivalent of the Waltons. How many did you have altogether Ian? Regards ss06

thanks for that i will try to get my hands on some asap. the centrefire i just bought came with a scope but its not good enough for it really so ill put it on the rimfire, its and AGS 3-9x50(brought out under webley zero option brand name), its a bit big for a rimfire i spose but ill just keep the magnification down. thanks again ss06

Today, i bought a CZ 452 in .17hmr. i have heard conflicting reports in the 452 of the dovetail rails being too small for some mounts. i have also heard that the rail is 11mm wide on a .22 and 3/8" on the hmr. can anyone help and recommend some mounts for it? thanks in advance ss06
