  1. I've only ever owned one dog of the proper gundog breeds-a springer about 25years ago .Even when I was a keeper I used a lurcher or on more formal days a collie . Whatever breed I've always found squirrels excellent for training young dogs for early retrieving lessons on warm and cold game though. They are just the right size and balence.
  2. Cowboy riding the trail comes across an Indian laying on the track with an ear to the ground . "What's going on ?" asks the cowboy. The indian looks up and answers," Stagecoach pass -by short time ago. Driver wearing green check shirt . All horses are black except nearside wheel- horse which is chestnut with white socks ". "Jesus ",exclaims the cowboy with admiration ," You red-men are sure gifted with fieldcraft skills . You mean you can tell all that just from listening to the vibrations in the ground ". The Indian looks up again and with a pained expression anounces
  3. As trappa has said ,the traditional way is to hang the little mole corpses up as evidence of a job well done . From a landowner's point of view this was sometimes favoured for another reason as a mole hanging on a fence could not become a "pocket mole".This was especially important if the payment was on a per mole basis . I give moles to a chap who passes them to someone in the fly tyers Guild. As long as he does'nt want me to skin em he can have as many as he likes for nothing . Recycling .
  4. I'm pretty sure that they ferret in several Southern European countries ,like Spain ,Greece and some of the Mediterranean islands e tc and I spoke to a Hungarian guy once who certainly knew about ferreting . It was about the only bit of language we had in common .
  5. Mounting it ? most definitely Whilst I have no intention of mounting it (maybe when it was still warm ) I am actually going to try to save the skull -something for the grand-childrens school nature table . I had a little collection of skulls but gave then to an artist friend who made a really spooky gothic sculpture with candles and dripping wax .
  6. The important part of the wording of the law in this case is "without good reason ". If you possess a knife over 3inches (or any similar edged tool such as 18 inch sythe for cutting the weeds on your allotment ) you are quite within the law as long as you have "good reason". In this case you had been legally rabbiting . The locking device on a lock-knife is simply a safety feature it is not to be confused with the mechanism of a flick knife . A flick knife is primarily a weapon whereas a gutting knife is a tool . It sounds like the policeman was mistaken .
  7. Just a thought but before you take a firearm onto a customers premises be sure to get their permission and remember that in certain circumstances a vehicle counts as a public place so you can't always take it into the back of the van and shoot it.
  8. Caught a few mink for a customer a while back and suggested -bad businessman that I am- that they really ought to get at least one trap of their own as they kept poultry and were surrounded by prime mink bandit territory-river ,ditches and carp ponds . I assured them that their little budget rat cage-trap really would'nt be up to the job. This afternoon the phone rang and I was faced with a 20 mile round trip to dispatch the mink they'd caught. What had they caught it in ? You guessed it ,the poxy rat cage . What's more the thing was'nt even deliberatly set and contained
  9. Ah, the Aldrich spring -activated thingy for large non-indiginous carnivores? My thoughts exactly.
  10. Can't fault the advice above about practicing with the locator because if it is a mk2 you will need some practice to interperet the signals . As above also;get your ferret used to wearing the collar while it is still in the cage and make any extra holes in the collar for tightening NOW not when you are in the field ! That's why collars get lost.
  11. Mate I told you how deep they 'll work .10 feet -maybe a bit more with good batteries. If you don't believe me phone Deben or check out their catalogue . I do understand you need to be sure before you pay out good money for one but honest I'monly trying to help . All the best
  12. It could have gone the other way ."it's a funny old game ". Might've had to conceeded defeat and gone back next week to try and pull one out of the net .
  13. Was called to a football club to catch the moles that had signed on for the team in an unofficial capacity. Not being a buff of the game I could'nt tell you what formation they were using but one was definatly goal -hanging. "No pressure matey but we're playing tomorrow".Eek . That left less than a day to catch the little vandals and allow the groundsman a bit of daylight to reinstate the turf !. Set the traps and rather than face a 3/4 hour drive home and the prospect of repeating the trip later I took the puppy for her first look at the sea and a long walk on the nearby beach.
  14. Well if the rabbits are in the holes and you can find all the holes in the dark of course it will work . Trouble is ,rabbits tend to be away from home at night and those that are at home might have rushed back to their burrows on your approach and might not be too keen on bolting . What about bolting rabbits to the lamp ...Just a thought Oh and what about finding or even worse digging to your ferret . All seems like hard going to me !
  15. R Lockley who was involved with a lot of the original research into myxomatosis in this country recorded that a rabbit flea can live without a host for up to six days and reports finding live fleas on a rabbit that had been dead for a week. Interestingly though, in his experiments at spreading the disease in controlled circumstances the actual number of fleas involved was a very important factor . He took fleas from rabbits that had died of myxomatosis and tranfered them to healthy rabbits . Rabbits that received 10 or more fleas were dead within 11-13 days wherea
  16. Found it . "Lurcher Appreciation Society " on facebook. "A group only for people who do not believe lurchers should be worked ".
  17. If you're not sure about the gap being "right" skin the rabbit and you will find out if you have successfully broken the neck or not . The bones will be disconected with just bloody flesh holding the head to the body.
  18. I've been told that somewhere on Facebook is a separate group fo people who don't believe in working their lurchers . Infiltration time ! Cept I'm a numpty on the computer and don't really know how face book works .

    Our Nick

A few years ago Mr G denied the Holocaust ever happened and reckoned it was Ok to put the boot in to get the BNP message across . Now he puts this down to "Youthfull misjudgement". Nothing to do with the fact that he exposed himself as a historically ignorant prat with a penchent for violence ! Maybe he has changed his spots but maybe he's just wearing a smart suit over them . If he is the most eloquent, well informed and charming person the BNP could find to be their representative one has to wonder about the mental levels of the people who chose him a
  20. Don't know if any one can understand this but it might help . As so many peoplle have already said ,practice on a dead one first . First take your rabbit by the back legs . Then grasp its head as in fig 1. Them turn your fist (the one holding the head) at right angles to the body . Stretch the spine by holding the back legs firm & pulling the head downwards. No strength is needed . You are just firmly overstretching the spine by about an inch and because the head is already bent backwards creating a weak point that is where it breaks . This can be done in a split
  21. Bloomin Hell "sauer" . Are you my lost twin ? Just what I'd have said . The Parker Hale is a bit long and spindly and does'nt look at all impressive but in my experienced it may be matched by more stylish moderators but it is never beaten . Yep that trigger kit is well worth the money . £12 seems a lot for a few springs and two bits of copper chenere -especially when you only use a couple of the items - but the effect is a revelation. I would add a word on night vision . It can have a very blinkering effect and you might not be fullyaware of peripheral hazards .Too many people "l
  22. Don't know if you have otters about I suppose ? Rats will often pull a duck down a hole and eat the part of the corpse that is underground so you do literally end up with half a duck sometimes . Not impossible that you have more than one predator on the go . The poo could be an otter but as so many other animals are scrounging about and eating healthily on ducks and fish their diet and poo might well smell similar . Is the lake fished which mught explain a carp dying from injuries or even old age and being dragged ashore by a mink or fox . Crows and rats -lots of things - could
  23. I hav'nt been convinced by the "masses" of leopards/pumas etc breeding in the wild but smaller foreign felines and a proven Scottish puma have turned up . Most of these are properly documented cases . But its a long running stale debate that keeps going over old ground ... What is needed is some refreshing new evidence . So here's a new slant Why the hell should'nt there be a few out there . Think about it .This country is beset with smuggling . If ton upon ton of illegal drugs, guns and thousands of people can find their way here via various means would
