  1. The short story is ; a liaison between a farm collie bitch and a stray lurcher.
  2. Yesterday's planned ferreting trip was curtailed due to a combination of escaped Dexters and an afternoon spent repairing an electric fence unit. So this morning I was determined to snatch at least an hour or two in pursuit of something less lumpy than these two ignorant sods. THEY WEREN'T SO CUTE YESTERDAY! There are very few rabbits on my little bit of permission but the neighour ,despite being vegetarian herself, has no problem letting me skip the fence . With minimal gear stuffed in my pockets and only a ferret box and spade to carry I set off ,with the dog ,across her ro
  3. I guess as there seem to be lot of copies locked in a container at the North Pole at the moment , it might be unfair for anyone who has read the book to give too much away. It deserves a proper reveiw ,but all those excited boys and girls who are hoping to find a book-shaped parcel in their Christmas stocking need to know is the wait will be worth it . All you'll get from me is that it's content ranges from serious, informative and thought provoking ,to the hilarious and downright hairy ! Along with tales of past derring-do and ,sometimes, disaster comes a
  4. Not just me then. I've finished it. Will probably start reading it again in a minute though.?
  5. Amazing generosity. I'm a bit busy reading at the moment? , but I'll be in touch. I feel I must warn folk not to buy this book though . If by chance one accidently falls into your hands; DO NOT OPEN IT If you do, you risk not getting any work done and going to sleep later than you should . Then there is a chance that you'll wake up really, really early and , glancing at the glossy , soft-back cover laying like a purring harlot on the bedside table , think to yourself "Just a couple more pages . I can handle it ." Edit : Well, I posted that at silly
  6. I found myself invoved in a bit of Old School air-gunning today. I was in the middle of checking a few squirrel cages in a customer's garden when a call came from farmer . Half a dozen feral pigeons were doing what pigeons do ,all over things they shouldn't be doing what pigeons do over . I could have nipped home for something more professional-looking but decided to make do with the squirrel dispatch tool I already had in the van . Namely a 48 year old Relum with iron sights. It turned out there were six hardcore offenders . In a sort of OK Corral ( s
  7. It depends on the original agreement if you pay him or not. Many Mole-catchers charge per mole caught and operate a "No mole, no charge "policy. Others bill you by the hour plus travelling time ,whatever the result. This should be made clear before the job is undertaken. Someone on a regular contract to control moles is paid an appearance fee for their time but for one -off jobs generally "No mole ,no fee" is quite normal and fair. After-all ,if payment doesn't depend on results the most unlucky or incompetant mole-catcher will make as much money as a a good one!
  8. A cheap monitoring option is to put a few chocolate biscuits in the loft and see if they disappear. Terrible waste of Hob Nobs though?
  9. Commercial rabbit meat production was a mug's game. Even more so for the Good Lifers who couldn't achieve any sort of scale of economy. Low profits, regulations ,and the low price of wild and imported rabbit pretty much killed the industry. The money was in the sale of breeding stock to hopefull beginers . Then came the boom in designer pet rabbits. Hence you may have to pay show stock prices for some starter stock. Though good nucleus bucks and does were never cheap. The NZW and its strains were the industry mainstay, but if you are just hoping for an interesting hobby that provid
  10. Today I came across a whole herd of puffballs. They were a bit far-gone to consider collecing but I spotted this little fellow amongst them. Which gave me an idea.....
  11. Yes , if you want to take the Micky out of anyone I'm more deserving of it As I said; at the time I was only a lad and to be honest it really didn't seem too unreasonable to think rabbits could be flushed with a bit of smoke. Of course I realised that I needed something in which to catch any bolting bunnies with burning bums. Ignorance being the mother of invention I covered the holes with a couple of Mum's shopping baskets and some plastic carrier bags. You may mock......
  12. Tried it several times, as keen novice, a callow, naive , youngster. It seemed a good idea at a time when we learned things for ourselves rather than from some dodgy internet hunting forum. It doesn't work. ??
  13. Its gone bit quiet on the Let's See Your River catches forum, possibly due to the weather. Anyway ,a friend and I dressed defensively and braved the heavy rain on Sunday . According to my accomplice my over-large ex-army poncho made me look like a giant camouflaged condom but at least I was dry. We caught plenty of grayling, roach, chub and even a couple of bream-it was amost a bite a cast- but nothing huge. Then I hit a patch of quality gudgeon! One of which morphed from being a plucky wriggler on the line into a heavy toothy dead-weight when a pike took a fancy to an easy meal.
  14. Shepherd's bullace and parasols;Autumn is definately here! And a horshoe which apparently can be re-used. The horses seemed to go out of there way to break any mushrooms I had earmarked for later. They they have just been moved to another field and now there are loads of erupting field and parasol mushrooms . Tomorrow I shall strike!
  15. The TF is a pleasant forum. A lot of it is above my head but I love the way everyone is so polite. When I managed to drop a vital bit of my other half's boy's old reel in a lake I asked if anyone had a spare part I could buy and one kind chap on the forum sent a complete reel and wouldn't accept payment.
  16. I had two more eels in as many casts, luckily all lip hooked too. Then nothing for half an hour until I was reeling in to go home and another eel actually struck the bait halfway back to me!
  17. It is amazing how boat fishing has changed. I don't go boat fishing often now, mainly because of the expense and work commitments. Luckily I have a friend( actually one of the original lot who was involved in the Black Prince/ conger inaugural voyage)who arranges regular trips and his wise words of " In 20 years time are you going to look back and fondly remember the days you spent at work? Or are you going to wish you'd spent more time fishing?" tend to sway me into at least a couple of trips a year. Like you and most people these days I've gone light; a Ron Thompson 12-25lb rod and an Ab
  18. Excellent. I will be asking your friend ,via you of course if it is not an inconvenience , for comparisons?. I don't think I will go down the restoration to original route. I rather like the rod as it is. It's a bit like vintage motorbikes. There are hundreds of superb restorations about but it's the old clunkers that have been kept on the road and evolved with ingenious repairs and the "wrong " parts that I think are more interesting. I am a Philistine? Anyway I could do a lot of work on my £5.99 rod and it would still end up only being a 40 quid rod. I may regret my stance though when
  19. From the bronzy fittings and handle shape the rod predates the Walker era carp rods ,but you could be onto something. Maybe the extra whippings and general tarting-up were done by an owner riding the Mk 1V wave. Its one thing having the rod explode during an epic battle with a fish but like you I didn't want to go too heavy with the test curve investigation . 3lb test curve would be erring on the conservative side.
  20. Yes, I mentioned your rod on my TF site thread and someone mentioned the faux salmon connection. Marco names do seem a bit randomly applied. I believe Capella ,the name of my rod, could mean chapel ,a bright star, or unlikely for such a stout rod, a snipe. Looking at the rings on your Silver Monarch I am even more confident that my rod is from the same stable. I've yet to find an image of a plain "Capella" like mine ; only a few of the Capella De Luxe which has a posh ,screw reel seat looks like a more lightweight rod. The old Nottingham is indeed held together with thin bras
  21. What a lovely mullet(I don't do envy ..but if I did?),and lovely rod, and a Mitchell Match. I have a good one ready for a boot sale. It belonged to a friend's father ,a keen matchman, who had "breathed on" it ,as they say in motorcycle tuning. Very nice but not for me. I did rather think the origins of the thread had been lost in a mist of nostalgic tackle talk. An acknowledgement of the past ; when millions of squirrels roamed the plains of America and there were so many trees in this country that a buffalo could go from Land's End to John O'Groats without touching the ground. The
  22. Perhaps serenipitous mention of your Monarch is more accurate than the term blame? I posted on a fishing forum asking for any information and the plethora of whippings certainly caused comment. If I remember ,you said your Marco was whipped in green. The rings ,ferrule and butt joint on my rod are whipped in green and might be original ,though it appears almost black under the varnish. So maybe the name Capella is genuine after all ; rather than ,as I first thought , a fiction of the previous owner?. All the fancy whipping is in burgundy so as you say ,probably a bit of a project for so
  23. Well ,a slippery slope indeed, but this one led , in the manner of a rainbow, to a crock of gold. Ok it led to a lovely cane rod of mysterious provenance. Nominally a "Capella", a name associated with your Marco brand Catfish Rodeo Rod , it resembles none of the brand's usual models and has no logo. In fact it has so many intermediate whippings there is no room for a logo! I don't know if it is an early Marco, the result of some custom building or a classy repair job by a previous owner, or indeed something else. All I know is that thanks to your casual mentioning of your Sil
  24. Ooh,hopefully there will be reports of cane-tamed catfish coming soon? One unfortunate effect of you talking about your Silver Monarch was that I googled it. There is one on the Evil Bay at £30 plus postage ,so yours was a bargain at a tenner! That's not the unfortunate bit though. As I was cruising the tempting waters of the bay I spotted a badly described (the charity shop "think" it is a sea rod)split c ane rod for a collection only, buy it now of only £5.99. Having said I need no more tackle I justified it as being ideal for piking from my canoe???. Not only that but a friend liv
  25. I had a Modern Arms Company .410. Their clever use of the Marco trade name gave their fishing tackle a sophisticated continental feel. I would've gone down exactly the same route as you with the rod. Stuff an expensive restoration; epoxy the whippings and get it in use? Out of interest the Marco Silver Monarch is possibly an up-market sea rod. I only write this because I found a rod called a Marco Silver King described as such on the interweb. And we all know everything on the Devil's Playground of the internet is gospel? Reel.....Well I just looked at my G&Y Avon ; a bigg
