  1. The pictures don't do justice to the markings either. Or show how chunky across the back it is.
  2. "Can't stop ,l have a pike to catch!" These were my words to my mate as l finished doing the photographic honours for him with his second big bream of the day. I'd already spent much of the previous few hours running up and down the bank to photograph a variety of specimens for him ,including two roach an ounce under 2lb and a 4.5lb chub. In between all this exercise l had been struggling with a swim yhat kept running hot and cold . Alternating between float and swim feeder kept a few small fish coming between periods of inactivity but l was begining to suspect the prese
  3. Apparently no one has produced evidence of the fish on birds' legs theory but it seems possible. Scientists in Spain and Brazil studying the movement of other aquatic species between waters found that fish eggs deliberately fed to ducks could pass through visually undamaged. The number coming out whole was a fraction of a percent though. In the interview l heard with one of the scientists he didn't say that any of these eggs had actually hatched. I suspect not because when pushed by the interviewer he merely said it indicated transference of fish "might be a possibility" . Not a v
  4. Not in the case of "my" pond. It is on the top of a hill, probably the highest point in the area. If it wasn't for the South Downs being in the way you could probably see the sea on a clear day.?
  5. Messing about making some traditional vintage style floats . Dyed peacock primaries, crow quills, burdock, bone and elder pith. Nothing of the finish displayed by the previous tackle on the thread bit they should work. Obviously l had too much time on my hands the evening l made this one.??
  6. Thanks Phil he's getting on but still going. Nice to see you still going too!
  7. I expect his Mum couldn't run fast enough to evade his Dad
  8. Yesterday ,after doing a few chores l set out with a dozen nets ,a ferret and the dog. I had no thoughts or even a chance of a big bag but lt's October ; the time of year when a Gentleman's thoughts turn to rabbits. I could say that the dog tracked along the hedgerow and eventually gave a mark under a bramble patch but l won't. That would be a hackneyed old clichè! Anyway we found some holes ,one of which interested the dog immensely. Stealthily l set the nets, taking care not to alarm the inhabitants of the bury. No, that is not only another ferreting clichè, it's a lie.
  9. What a lovely chub to catch from any water ,let alone a farm pond. Weirdly the pond l've been fishing has produced nothing but rudd and tench for weeks. Yet my early vists produced a few roach and surprisingly ,a dace or possibly a dace hybrid. The nearest river is a mile away . A distance easily covered by a little boy on a bicycle ; even with a bucket of water full of tiddlers swinging from his handlebars.? ?
  10. Well, l had a go for couple of hours this evening, and totally blanked?. Not even a bite. I hope you have better luck GL. Definately take the centrepin next time. The first decent tench l hooked from the pond took me by surprise too. I'd been struggling for strikable bites and nearly went down to a lighter trace and smaller hook. Luckily l was too lazy? because when l did get a decent bite the fish was definately the boss for a while. Still , as it was ,this evening the fish were definately the winners. The dog so obviously lacked confidence in my ability he even had the nerve to
  11. It's not keeping the bait secure that is hard. That can be achieved with decent bait boxes and properly covered bait points. The risks come from the fact that a rat slowed by poison is more likely to be caught by its enemies and you have little control of where a rat may expire. It may die underground or in the open where it could be eaten by anything from a wild predator to a beloved pet. Then you are into secondary poisoning, possible trouble , futile vet's bills and heartache. Laying poison is easy . Actively seeking dead and dying rats and disposing of them safel
  12. Since Victorian times and still going today l believe!
  13. That looks just like the little farm pit l've been fishing this Summer. 25yards wide,40yards long and about 7 feet deep in places. Local wisdom has it that the pond was drained and the fish removed many years ago but it had been known as The Tench Pond. I started fishing it after spotting a shoal of little rudd. It was hard going , even these tiddlers were very wary. Only after a few visits ,including some biteless blanks, did it slowly unlock its secrets...
  14. I came across this little box while sorting out my Dad's shed. Still with the 2/6 price tag and virtually full of pellets.
  15. I had a postman's bike. Red and white with front rack, bought quite legally at a police lost bicycle sale. What l can't quite fathom is why someone in the lost and found property deparment didn't look at it and say " That's a post bike," and give it back to the GPO!
  16. They do look like Victors. Maybe they have an application in the "cave-in" type sets but they seem designed for bigger moles than ours. I know l would lose those setting tools in about five minutes!? Funnily enough, l bought two Beagles when they came out partly because l was curious but mainly because they were on offer at seven quid each. As work-horses they are a bit delicate for chucking in a bag and rattling about with a bunch of conventional traps. Maybe it is just our local soil type that lends itself to neat rectangular holes but l've had a lot of success with them.
  17. " l have my own traps. " said the customer. "I'll bring my own." answered l. Thank Heaven l did. The things he had were like medieval torture devices. They required seperate levers to set and were ,if not impossible , certainly very hard to set-up sensitively. In fact they bordered on being dangerous to handle !
  18. Yes, the ones l have came with coat of copper ,as if someone had dipped them in a copper sulphate solution for an hour. That"s about how long the "plating" lasted? I don't know if it had been done to protect them in storage or just to make them look pretty. They work fine but if l buy more l will look for stainless l think.
  19. kanny those plugs are little works of art! Ive been making bits and bobs but my floats ,while they work ,only look decent from a distance(except when they are hanging in a tree !). I suppose it's partly because l'm lazy and a bit of a numpty with tools but also because in my case floats tend to be fairly temporary possessions ! l'm determined to make fishing fun this Season and go a bit primitive. So l've made a horse hair fly line and some shorter lengths for fishing with a stick and hook lengths. I've even made some bone and thorn hooks but bone is not a good material for t
  20. I had an interesting wasp job today. An elderly farmer l do work for had always been proud of his conservation credentials but over the last couple of years has commendably embraced an even more fundamentalist attitude. Even he found a bird box full of wasps by his back door a bit too much to bear though. Knowing how anti insecticed he is we hatched a plan to move the bird box, complete with inhabitants into the woods. After suiting-up l placed a short ladder against the wall . This is when l had a moment of doubt regarding the wisdom of the venture, the wasps became a bit p
  21. I had my first one at thexend of April. It was tennis ball size . It was a broom and stamp job. Ive done a dozen or more proper nests over the last two or three weeks but feel it could get reasonably busy when the Sun comes back.
  22. Once gone ,use a scent disrupter to break the pheromone trail that lures em back every year. Cheap car air fresheners and household scent nuetralisers will do.
  23. Trust me to come to the party late but l knew l had a picture of Ravioli/ Clarissa somewhere but have only just found it. She looks pretty healthy in the Zoo l recall from reading other articles her weight settled at 8-10lb under the record. Probably nothing to do with stress more likely she and the other fish on the tank were on a controlled diet balenced between keeping them healthy and not fouling the water to keep it clear. Also l expect the water in the tank was aerated and therefore moving so she would have been more active and used more energy than in
  24. Either the captor or one of the Barbel Gurus let it slip when asked for a rent a quote. ..... l believe a few clubs have experienced a boost in membership enquiries ? But ,my post was worded theoretically. Its purpose really just to see if it would get a mention on certain specimen forums . Which apparently it did, briefly. As in , before someone realised the date? Actually very fair play to the captor of the record!
