  1. Might need a bit of help in the next couple of weeks if anyone interested, I might be struggling on my old tootsies and don't want to let the lads down.
  2. It's surprising how they survive, it's so much warmer underground you would not believe the difference in temperature. Most of the young will survive until they come out of the burrows, then it's rats crows magpies stoats weasels and dogs and not forgetting the cars. We only play a small part in their demise, so don't feel too bad about it, we can of course re-introduce them in wiped out areas, if you know what I mean, as I say on my reports one in the dogs cage
  3. Got to agree with the one.. We have to continue around here until we have no choice to stop because of vegetation or too many kills in. There are so many rabbits around here if we left them unattended they would destroy all the crops. You can tell with the numbers we get there are plenty, and these areas get done year in year out. I can feel your guilt at killing pregnant does and young ones, especially if there are not too many rabbits in your area, I would probably be the same then. No one wants to kill off their own sport us included, but if we were not to do it they would just get someone
  4. Not as bad as me mate, admitted to hospital this morning with severe chest pains been in all day just got out at 12.30am got my son to pick me up in his scooby. All the roads thick with snow and cars stuck all over, we just sailed through. I was pissed off, they wanted to keep me in all night I told them to take a hike, the snoring in there was worse than in the barracks. I was so relieved to get home, will have to calm down a bit I think or it may be the lads digging a big hole for me......
  5. Well operation went well, just 2 weeks off my feet supposedly, will have to see about that. Just sat in front of fire warming my cold toes now, can't wait for the anaesthetic to wear off, about 3 days of bad pain they said.
  6. Well I have an operation on my big toe this friday so will be out of action for a while. I am supposed to have my feet up for 2 weeks, yeah right... I can't see that happening. I may have to sit it out in the van and just take some pics while the others are grafting, be nice to get back to normal though, still give the young un's a run for their money though with digging etc.
  7. Yes Cookie it's easier with a few pairs of hands, especially when we are running the dogs, but sometimes one or two of them are not that bothered and drag their heels a bit. I can't understand what's up with them I'm always keen as mustard, guess it's in you or it ain't. As for gutting we do it as we are building them up so it's not too bad, sharp craft knife, quick shake and done.
  8. The lads take them back to Sheffield and sell them to pay for the fuel and have a beer, I don't usually bother with any unless I am short of ferret food.
  9. Another day out but with a bit of difference, we started the day ferreting using the nets and were on for a bumper day, 11 out of the first 3 small sets on some mounds of soil in the first 20 minutes. Well that was until we got turfed off the land, as it happens this farm yard and surrounding hard standing and the mounds of soil surrounding it had just been sold for a mere 3 million I was told. But we thought we were still ok on this bit, that was until the new owner approached us and asked who gave us permission. He was ok about it and I apologised and we beat a retreat to some nearby hedgero
  10. Good day mate, you dig like we do then, what's a few feet to worry about? keeps you warm though. Hope the dog was ok.
  11. It sure is Moe, it doesn't matter how hard we hit them they just bounce back the following season.
  12. Well wish we had stayed ferreting longer, the duck shooting was not so good this evening, got another tomorrow though on better pastures.
  13. When I arranged the latest days ferreting I forgot all about being on a duck shoot later in the afternoon. I explained my predicament to the lads and told them it would just have to be a half day so I had time to get back and ready for the ducks and drive out there. They were not too bothered as I had chosen some relatively easy ground which we know holds a good head and should get the numbers. We got here to see the fields covered with the rabbits, they had chewed off a large area of rape but they soon made a quick exit when they saw us. The dogs had a quick chase but the rabbits were to cl
  14. A cooked chicken ! sod that eat the cooked chicken and put in some road kill, I just shoot a pigeon or rabbit they work fantastic.
  15. Nice one, bet they had you running around like a headless chicken......sorry just saw your head was cut off on the pic, had to say something daft.
  16. Well done cookie shame there were not many for the dog, I love to see the dogs work. We are out lamping some areas we can't ferret next week, give the dogs a bit of exercise.
  17. Yeah wish someone else would do ours I might get in the frame more often. I have a canon D500 its great for stills and video in HD
  18. It has to be done sometimes but we never look forward to it much, heavy thick brambles I refer to. I had promised the farmer that I would have a butchers at it and see if we could manage it, when we got there it was much worse than expected and almost impossible to do but we gave it a shot. The farmer came down and said we should leave it if it was too much and he would get it flailed out, but seeing as we were already there we thought it would be a good PR exercise. It was very cold and frosty so we got stuck into it straight away, hoping to keep warm grafting away. There were quite a few h
