I got a call from one of the keepers asking if we could just do a bit of clearing up some rabbits before the end of the season. We knew that the numbers wouldnt be that great as we did this area late last season but all the same we needed to do it for him. It started out pretty slow, it seems that most of the rabbits are straying from the adjoining estate that I dont have permission on. We plodded on getting the odd one or two but found that we were digging a few stinkers (rabbits that had been shot and crawled back into the sets and died) a bit time consuming to say the least. It was steady b

Please dont use muzzles for the ferrets sake, they should be banned.

Had the crew come down for another session today, the local keeper was keen to see us at work so tagged along for an hour first thing. It was good as we managed 13 in the first hour and he was really happy with our work. He was keen for us to get going on the rats as soon as possible, we just need a new smoker as the old one is knackered. We did a small spinney then moved to the railway side of the field where the rabbits are quite thick on the ground. It was much easier than expected even though we had the odd deep dig of 5 foot, but not much signs of young rabbits thankfully. As we were wait

Half a day ferreting and pigeon shooting
stevethefish replied to stevethefish's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
Getting very close now mate, when the digging becomes unbearable we will stop, maybe a week or two if we are lucky. Got some foxes, rats and pigeons to sort out then, its a hard life..........................honest. Good day for you that Adam? -
Good job I read it to the end lol.

???? just dont feed them much, a tablespoon of MEAT a day for 2 weeks if they have access to plenty of food they will just gorge themselves, but feed them on meat. My opinion is they shoulb be catching their own food, dried food is for rabbits.

Yes there were thousands by the res when I left, might set up under those conifers next time. Been on howards today for an hour, not much happening plenty about but a bit skitty and wouldnt settle. When you out next? I might do Roberts again tomorrow but ferreting saturday and foxing sunday, do you need us to do any more on that other place we left off? -
My mate told me yesterday someone paying £3 each for adult rooks.

I took a guy off the site (unlacedgecko) for a couple of hours pigeon shooting this morning and got the crew to come down as well so they could do a bit of ferreting too. It was the first time out pigeon shooting for him and was mainly to get the feel for it more than anything. We all met up at mine and drove to the farm just a couple of minutes away and while the lads set off ferreting we set up for the pigeons. I had been there a few days previous and the 2 main areas of activity were the places we set up, I was also in constant communication with the lads just to check on their progress wit

The birds have returned to the rape fields, I have just been spotting and there are thousands about again and they seem to be split up more than they have been recently which is a good thing. So the offer is back on the table, if anyone wishes to have a day and willing to donate a couple of boxes of shells to me then I think we may be on for a bit of sport. Cheap as chips for a days shooting, you must have the gear though, netting, deeks, transport and pref a rotary, it will make a big difference. I would be looking at maybe this saturday or one day next week, as always I will do my best to -
There is no substitute for a good marking dog, we dont even bother unless the dogs start digging or just wont take their heads out of the hole. The dogs know if there is anything at home and to ferret blind is a mugs game really unless you are doing it for something to do for a couple of hours and not bothered if you get any. What you are explaining is natural, some sets look as if they will hold dozens but inevitably are empty and some that look unused can hold a few. At this time of year most sets will hold 2, 3 or 4 while they are breeding but there are exceptions, we had one last week tha

We dont intentionally use ferrets for ratting, unavoidable sometimes when ferreting the side of a maize strip, the ferrets are generally ok one on one but can suffer some damage. They can loose eyes, nasty gashes and even get killed never mind what others say, best use the smoker and terriers or spades and clubs. The rats have a nasty bite, the teeth actually scizzor when they bite causing nasty cuts (scars to prove) plus some are carriers of weils disease, just be carefull. Rats dont scare me at all we used to ferret them and catch them by hand years ago for the dogs. The idea of rats being

Yes I am too, my camera on the blink today so stevo going to take some in the morning and email them to me and I will put them on. An expensive camera and playing these games not on at all.

Most rats run through the mesh and straight back into another hole, unfortunately for them the terriers had other plans today, I pulled one out as fat as a rabbit today, it was full of young and before it hit the ground it was mince. One of the ferrets had a bite on its face, it dont usually bother them but a couple of weeks ago one nearly lost an eye through a rat. Got a few rats to move shortly, wont use ferrets though because if the ferret backs up a couple of rats it could be in trouble, them rats will fight to the death.

I was asked by one of the keepers to sort a couple of hedgerows and a small spinney for today, rude to refuse as they say. The crew came down eager as ever to get stuck in, we also took the terriers as we had been told there were a couple of charlies about. We started just across the road from my house, the first hedgerow was pretty sparse but the few sets threw up an average of 2 rabbits for 6 holes and they bolted really well, for a change. As we got to the top of the field the rabbits came more often and soon the bag was adding up, by 10.30 we had 30 in the van so things looking good. As th

Yes mate they will be back and hopefully easier targets. I will try and have a bash next week sometime and polish a few more off. Had a good do with that sbs but with it being double trigger if feckin bangs your finger using the front trigger. -
Hi mate the fleas dont live on ferrets but will stay on them long enough to find a new host, they can theoretically live there for up to 3 months, same on dogs. You can get flea bites off them and they are a pain but just leave them on the ground as they have told you and most will leave when the rabbit cools. I freeze rabbits whole for my ferrets guts and all, this kills off any fleas and also tape worms, they are more of a concern. We have hundreds of rabbits in the van every month and never see a flea so dont fret too much, if your bothered about them put a sprinkling of flea powder in the

Predatorman and his mate took me up on the offer of a days pigeon shooting, they came down today and had a bash. I had checked the rape fields in question the day before and it was barron of pigeons, I didn't want them to have a journey for nothing so decided to take them on one of my local farms. We could split up on there as there are a few maize strips that have plenty of pigeon activity, well that is when you are not shooting them. The morning was pretty damp to say the least, not good pigeon weather at all but the forecase was looking good. I set the guys up on the strips I thought best -
