    Not quite true as there is evidence that they will not only kill but also eat mice that stray in to the tunnels. Their main food though is worms and inverabates. they will also eat there own kind , but they are still insectivore's Part-time insectivors!! No they're hypocrites.

    That's why I never remove them. Powder and leave them in situ to kill the whole colony. If you must remove then a residual spray at the nest site should kill any returners.

    I agree Matt, the law is quite clear. The mirror in this application is not used for dazzling so would be perfectly legal. The aim of W&C Act regarding dazzling is to prevent the disabling/distracting of the birds to fascilitate capture or killing.

    That's the only reason I asked about your trade. I think I'm in the right job and I know a satisfied customer and a fox cub that would both agree with that In pest control every job is unique. Each situation is evaluated in relation to pest control law and the particular problems experienced by the customer. The decision lies with the professional. Releasing fleas would not be practicable or solve the customer's problem, releasing a fox in some circumstances is perfectly respectable in my opinion but other pest controllers may disagree. Killing is always easier than thinking

    All public health pests are killed, moles and rabbits are killed, squirrels are killed. Foxes if healthy and I decide that it is fair to release them will be released. As I say they are not vermin by default, they are indigenous wildlife. A fox under a shed is not the same as a fox in pheasant rearing wood. So what is your trade AKA BRINDLE?

    This forum is also for pest controllers and that is what I am. I deal with public health pests and wildlife management. In other words everything from rats, mice, fleas and bedbuges to squirrels, rabbits foxes and mink and everything in-between. I recently had to trap a fox underneath a customer's shed. I caught it and released it in a carefully chosen site where I thought it would survive but would cause little damage in the area. It was one of this year's cubs. Sadly the gamekeeper/hunter mentality can't think beyond "this species is a pest so it must be killed". As I said wildlife managemen

    Actually the Red Fox isn't vermin, it is an indigenous british mammal. Some individuals can become vermin when they get themselves into situations that conflict with man's business. Remember that wildlife management is a balance not a right to kill. Respect all wildlife and respect your quarry.

    Any reason you chose apples rather than carrots? Are the cages placed where the rabbits are travelling? Is the bait being refreshed daily?

    I don't believe using a mirror would be illegal for the purposes of reflecting the bird's image as used in a Larsen. It would only be illegal if used to dazzle which is clearly not the case here.

    I think CSL recommended salting the carrots to keep them fresh but I've never tried it. As others have said, I refresh the carrots every evening as late as possible and use the shade of trees and bushes as long as this coincides with areas of rabbit activity.

    If you can't tell the difference between a Rook and a Crow then what happens when you mistake a Crow for a Chough or a Rook for a Raven? Know your quarry or leave it to someone who does. It's not nitpicking it's the first law of hunting or pest control. It doesn't take long to learn and you will be a wiser man for knowing. Why not buy a book on corvids?
