  1. Edlington traps sell two excellent fox cage traps; rural and urban, same design different size and cheaper. Works on the treadle, rod and gravity door principle (squirrel trap just ten times the size) If you catch a fox and don't have a gun it is not illegal to "relocate" assuming it is healthy and not mangey. Make sure you get the new landowner's permission first of course. The local hunt will apreciate the sport.
  2. Can't imagine much bounce with that strong spring. Guess that's what makes it humane.
  3. They've been like that for a year or so now. Extra momentum on the down stroke? or a barrier to stop others getting in after a kill? Can't really see the need though.
  4. I assume you mean the new type of Fenn mole trap not the old one Steve. I have loads of them and they are very good. Get them from The Edlington Trap Centre. Work on same principle to the scissors but larger, rounder opening accross the jaws and the trigger plate pivots from one side. Difficult to explain but are nice traps. If I have a criticism it is that the spring could be a bit stronger. I had one go off when I was on site last week and I pulled it out and the mole was still alive. I released the tention and he was off like a grehound out out of the trap! Now if that had been a talpex he
  5. Steve, you can get Talpex from Barrettine or Killgerm. I always double check my traps are original and British before I order. Who makes the best scissor trap do you reckon (largest opening, quality etc)?
  6. I know what you mean TOMO. No they probably aren't Dufus but they are quality made British traps. They really are worth buing a few at that price just to see. I think you will be pleasantly surprised. Other than that I never buy copies and always buy British (except my Canadian Kanias which I love and hate but wouldn't be without) For cage traps and Fenn traps use The Edlington Trap Centre. excellent cage traps designed and built by trappers, and it shows. You know the sort of thing; treadle bars actually in the right place, now how rare is that?
  7. The flatpack trap company do some really good quality British made Dufus at £2.45ish I think. Excelent quality and value and while you've got the company credit card in your hand why not treat yourself to a new keyboard, looks like you've got a dodgy one thereyyy
  8. Welcome Lambsey, happy New Year and good luck with the venison.
  9. Welcome David, what do you do? Old Hooky's the pint and going down well, Cheers!
  10. I don't have an answer to your snaring problem but as TOMO says poison them. Retrieval is no problem, just use blocks secured on a wire so that they can easily be inspected and removed when sorted. Probably not as much fun as snaring though. Having said that if there is a lot of loose grain about they may not be hungry enough to thake the bait, in which case you could try liquid poison hoppers (out of the way of children of course)
  11. Thanks CW, do I get the impression that you have some influence over the Kania design or should I stop trying to read between the lines?
  12. I love those old Kanias OTC. Are the new ones better or are there some nice features in those old antiques you wish they'd kept? The restricted entrance looks safer for non-targets and that trigger plate looks neat too.
  13. Steve, I know I've just spent a lot of air criticising the Kania but I still rate it and use it constantly. It's the best squirrel trap as far as I'm concerned. Call me a perfectionist but I couldn't produce such a well designed trap that shoddily. A trap that rocks when the target pest enters is unacceptable especially when it's so simple to correct. Once propped up it's deadly. I wont bother to complain because if they haven't noticed the fault and corrected it by now then I don't think an e-mail will have much affect.
  14. I agree with every word of that CW. What frustrates me is that it is so easy to correct. Lengthen that round bar on the spring bracket by about a quarter of an inch so that it acts as a leg and job done. As can be seen from your Kania, with the bar on the ground the opposite corner is up in the air by about a quarter of an inch. As the squirrel puts some weight on the trap it will rock.
  15. I don't have any problems levelling them in lofts. As I say I modify them but my point is, at that price should I have to. Do you mean to tell me as they come off the production line mr QA hasn't noticed they all fall over. With the old ones it was just the weight of the spring but now if you force them level they wont even sit flat their own base because they don't seem to be square. Steve I think they got the decimal point in the wrong place on my last ones. I don't know about .001 mm, more like 10.00 mm
  16. A great trap whether it's used inside or out, I've caught large numbers of squirrels and only ever had one foul catch BUT for that price surely they can make it sit up straight without any assistance! Does this annoy anyone else or am I just a fussy **** I bought another two the other day and I'm sure they're getting worse. Don't they know what square means in Canada. Don't they know that they need to be stable to catch. So the question is how do you modify yours or do you just find something in the loft to prop them up? Has anyone ever told them to get it sorted or are we just
  17. More of the same:- ie bait for cages, materials and designs for Fenn tunnels, what mods/adjustments do you make to mole traps.
  18. FF, how much for the tails and what do you do with them? OTC, sounds a bit risky - I can't dig him out if he doesn't come back!
  19. I would use a Fenn but I haven't got around to making any tunnels yet and the lady has a cat that gets on the wall where the squirrels get in (could get messy). I don't think there are any near neighbours, they've probably raided someone's walnut tree so I'm just after some tasty choc bar or smelly titbit to make them feel hungry even if they're not.
  20. I've got a squirrel trapping job on the go where I have several (numbers unknown) in a loft space of an old black and white cottage. There is NO loft access so I'm trapping outside using cages baited with whole yellow maize and peanuts. I've caught three but it's too slow. I (think) know the problem - they obviously have an alternative food source or stash somewhere. The customer actually saw a squirrel taking maize from in front of one of the cages and take it away and bury it. So what I'm after is a bait more attractive to get them queing up to get in those cages before they chew up
  21. And if you're only going to use 6 traps on an 18 hole golf course be prepared for a long haul!
  22. Merry Christmas, happy new year and all that jazz. I've worked in pest control for the last four years after what seemed a lifetime of totally unconnected work. It paid the bills and mortgage and fed the kids who have now mostly flown the nest. Rabbiting was then a hobby. It's now part of my real job (how cool's that). I'm now self-employed after setting up my own pest control business on the borders of Worcestershire and Herefordshire at the beginning of October. I do the full range of pest control which includes what we like to call wildlife management which mainly consist of ra
