alright m.runner personaly i would of showed it something by now, what i normally do is from day one tease it with rabbit skins every other day wright up to 5-6 months, then i will drop a couple of live rabbits in a confined space not to much of a run but a chase and kill.then i would leave it off till about 9-10 month and drop a few live rabbits in a big field on nutral ground.now realy your away, just lamp it lightly for the next couple of month and hopefully thats it.to be honest i dont normally show mine a day time hare until 13-14 month if i can help it,good luck with the pup, marc

Personally ,I wouldnt start a terrier on either of these quarry.Depending on the breed and temperment,I would let the younster have a look at some rats around 7-8 months old and depending on how it progressed with these I would allow the young dog to explore KNOWN safe holes at around the year old mark.In between this period the terrier usually self enters to rabbit.People have said in the past to keep a digging dog off the rabbits but Ive found that once started on bigger stuff the terrier will prefer it to rabbits and not mess you about. The secret with any dog in the early stages is not to o

Mate -All these previous methods are o.k but are likely to scare the pup if its not done much ratting.7 months old is not too late to introduce the pup to a ferret ,and I dont mean to kill it.This is by far the oldest and most efficient method of ratting, and the most satisfying for the hunter.Get the pup used to playing with ferrets and generally used to their shape and ways.People say dont use a finder collar on a ratting ferret but personally I do .Nothing worse than not knowing where the ferret has killed .Use one of the micro collars.this combination is not only quiet but kills more rats I

Some time ago we got hold of some military flares, red smoke flares to be precise.Used them on rat buries in in a ditch .The smoke travelled well through the tunnels but what amused me was the red assed rats that bolted.

I thought I was pretty much on top of the foxes on one of the places I go but one night I went there with a mate on his quad.He has a rifle rack mounted on the rack so I was able to take the .222 and the 12bore which I carried. We always open the gates on the way through the farm as its poultry and obviously all shut in at night. The gates are opened so that we can chase foxes on the quad without having to stop for gates. The remaining fox population is so wary on this farm ,that shooting with 12bore off the back of the quad is the best method at night. Didnt see anything until we got to the ma

Sometimes pays to take the youngster back to basics-ie-rats.This sometimes rekindles or starts the prey drive in an otherwise confused terrier.Sadly though as you said ,not all terriers make the grade.

Quality read lads .Learn something new every time I log on. -
Learn to use your hand pushed against your mouth. The tone and volume can be varied ,unlike most of the bought calls. This will amuse some of the more experienced lads-Ive recorded the squealing of a rabbit on my phone which was caught by the lurcher and Ive started using to call foxes with some success.Beats paying 60 to 100 quid for the fox calling plyers and tapes!

some time's [bANNED TEXT] me think's they are all towny fox's the rscpa has dumped in the loverly countryside  I thought I was pretty much on top of the foxes on one of the places I go but one night I went there with a mate on his quad.He has a rifle rack mounted on the rack so I was able to take the .222 and the 12bore which I carried. We always open the gates on the way through the farm as its poultry and obviously all shut in at night. For the moment keep the lamp on ,when you and the dog get a bit more experianced you will be able to tell which foxes are acting a bit suspicious and need the lamp off just to reassure them. Its the suspicious foxes that need watching! .If at all interested they may run in while the lamp is off and you have missed the chance of a run. They will not linger nearby while the lamper swings the lamp round looking for them .All you will see is the back of charlie running away or worst still and the most frustrating for the lurchermen ,the fox may of reteated to a safe distance and just sit ther

Its hard to say where you are going wrong without knowing whether the foxes are already lamp/squeak shy.Personally ,I shine the beam at their feet out at a distance and use the work light on the clulite as they get closer, say 60yds.you dont need much light to see fox eyes at this range. When first spotted I do my best to get downwind of them even if it means a tiptoe of 50yds.Like someone said before I make the first few calls loud to get the foxes attention and then quiet down as charlie aproaches.Ive found if you squeal loudly at a close fox he will be off regardless of whether he was committ

I dont think anybody answered the question asked"what is break in procedure". Im not that well up on the technical side of rifle shooting but I do know that unless the rifle is fitted with a heavy duty varmint barrel ,you cannot put round after round through it straight off. Each round fired causes the barrel to heat up and distortion on a small scale is the result, causing a drastick loss of accuracy.A period of cool off is required between each shot and I take this to be the break in procedure. -
Mate-these batteries you have are 12v - coupling them together makes 24v-this will blow your bulb unless you upgrade it.charge them both up and take them both to be used seperately.

Nigel- That other forum is at the furthest end of the scale to us as Im sure you agree. One of the twats speaks of badgers being in decline.Obviously not a night walker! These people who say that man has no need to control any species dont seem to realise that either directly or indirectly we manage every living thing .My granddad tells me of a time when tb was almost unheard of and its no coinsidence that this was a time when the badger was not protected. The spread of tb seems to be in direct relationship to the increase of badgers.Commen sense says lets have widespread cull, not extermination,a
