Where abouts are you cocpops?

I've been ferreting for quite a few years now and still have'nt come to a firm conclusion on this one. Is it best to enter your ferrets on the down wind side of a bury so they can smell out the rabbits better or on the up wind side so the bunnies bolt earlier cos they know what's coming. I tend to go for thedown wind option. And with a burry on a steep slope is it better to enter them in the top or bottom.? As they tend to bolt down hill I usually start them off at the top giving the rabbits a chance to bolt down hill more easily , is this a good theory? Would be very interested to hear

I wear my finger out pulling the knot tight with spun poly/nylon. I find you've got to pull quite tight to make sure the knot does not come loose/slip. Good idea with the glove finger though.

New CZ or second hand Sako quad
liongeorge replied to mark a l's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I bought a second hand quad this year it's superb (two barrels ,WTC scope and quality mod not sac) . I think the money is a bit strong though as I got offered a new one fo £440 nine months ago at Greenfields in Salisbury. I got mine by placing a couple of wanted ads then you can get a bit of history on it and pay alot less than dealer prices (I got my set up for alot less than what they're asking for yours). I got offerd a couple of good ones in the end. There are alot of CZ lovers on here and don't get me wrong they are great rifle , I think the 16" heavy barrel is the best of the lot but -
Am I incredibly lucky? My ferrets never seem to get fleas. Have never treated them with anything.

Thanks guys food for thought there. I'll give her the benefit for the minute with plenty of attention and see what developes. The biting has come on very quickly perhaps it is something to do with her health. Cheers George

I have 4 jills who live together 2 are 3 years old and 2 are 4 years old. Three are fine chilled out friendly ferrets and good hunters but one of the younger ones has always been a bit of a pain/manic. It's always a bit hyperactive, it bulleys the others, is difficult to handle, is not a great hunter as it just races around the burry. None of these is too much on its own but put together is a pain. Then today the straw that broke the camels back, it bit me properly. It had been getting nippy of late so I had been handling it alot and feeding that vitamin stuff in a tube by hand but when

Tapeworm  -
Thanks guys , your right range estimation is very difficult at night anyway so the hmr does seem the best way to go. My local farmer has just cut his silage in the field over the road so as soon as this damn wind drops I'll be over there to zero her, hopefully at the weekend.

Perhaps I've got this wrong but did the chap shoot these bucks front on in the chest?

Hi all, I recently got ATN Spartan 410 NV scope and laser. I haven't fitted it to my rimfire yet which is a Sako quad I have the .22 barrel as well as the .17hmr barrel. Is it going to be better to fit it with the .22 and take full advantage of the quietness or am I better off with it on the 17hmr and be able to use the better range and foxhitting ability etc but make some more noise? I'll be mainly going for rabbits. Have any of you guys tryed it on both? The set up alows a clear view out to at least 100yds. Any advice appreciated

buck fever and sticks a v bad cobination, off a bipod you can get away with it/get over it.

Mine is good as he lets you drop off at night on your way back home even if its 11pm. Pick cash up next day or whenever your next passing , he keeps an envelope going for you I normally leave it till I've built up a few then pop in and see him. I feel sorry for you guys in Scotland because i believe you also don't get paid very well either (well thats what I read on a thread about this subject), sounds like ther's not enough competition.

Anyone Seeing Any Cubs ?
liongeorge replied to whippeter69's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
My bedlington whippet found 4 above ground at the weekend. In very dense brambles. They were only small (about the size of large rabbits). Instinct took over and she sorted them out instantly even though she's never been set on any foxes. -
Cheers guys am not worried about next years stock as the rabbits are comming through fence from next door. Keeping bottom line down might be more of a problem but at the mo rabbits are keeping grass down. George

Have only used my longnet for ferreting for the last few years but want to have a go longnetting aT night on one of my permisions where it is difficult to shoot the bunnies. I read on one of the threads that it is getting to the end of the season. Why is this? What are the problems with longnetting in spring/summer? Any advice much appreciated.

Fair comment Dadioles. He should go for .22 if thats what he wants and it may be the most appropriate rifle.Unfortunately the system as it is today makes you try and find any angle to smooth things along.

Oh dear, please don't start that old HMR v .22 "safer option" (bollocks utter nonsense) debate again. They are both as safe or as dangerous as you want them to be and if the police are taking the attitude that HMR is safer than .22 they need re-educating. One of the major deciding factors between the two is noise. .22 can be as quiet as an air rifle, HMR will always make a loud crack. They each have their place. Just read the threads..... Given a choice - I would rather be shot with a .22 Dadioles please read my post again. I didn't say whether one was safer than the other , it is p

Many police forces now prefer .17 as a safer option and you might be better off going straight for that and forgetting the .22. It is certainly possible for you to get it open from the word go particularly if you explain that you have various permisions/invites on the other side of the border/other counties and that getting each signed off would be a mare, and who's going to do it them or the other lot? good luck. I got mine open for .243 and .22 from the word go (but I was 39!)

Thought I'd try some Remington .17's in my Sako Quad at the wkend after a recomendation from a friend. They shot pretty much to the POI of the Hornady round and grouped well but my son noticed one of the cases I ejected was cracked at the neck with a distinct track down the brass then when he was shooting one went 'phut' then bang. With the 'phut coming from the breach area! We checked the case nd it too ws badly cracked. Has anyone else had this problem ? It seems potentially v dangerous. I think I'll take the rest back to the shop (only shot 25 of 100 bought).

You must be looking in the wrong end! Have used mine loads for seeing what deer I've got on my permisions. With a bit of moonlight and particularly a lamp with ir filter you can spot them out to 200yds+.Foxes can be spotted, watched one come up a hedge towarsd me from 60yds right to 6ft away from me , awsome. Struggles spotting rabbits except close up again lamp helps. They're a bit fiddley to focus, mine you can see more clearly not in the centre but slightly to one side. Worth every penny. Don't expect too much.

Chinese ones are crap, don't do it. My other suggestion is look at a versa-pod much better than Harris for many reaons IMO

You can purse net them if mesh small enough, have read about it not seen it! Might be be a laugh
